The season continues with 5 Jours de Dunkerque, a five day long stage race north in France. The race consists of five stages: three flat stages, one flat with cobbles and one hilly with cobbles. Cobbles combined with a packed field will certainly make an interesting race!

Previous Winners

2008: Gianni Meersman2011: Mikhail Ignatiev
2009: Edvald Boasson Hagen2012: Pieter Vanspeybrouck
2010: Francesco Ginanni2013: Pieter Vanspeybrouck

The Cobblers

Although i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Jérôme Baugnies has not had a great season so far, he must tackle being the favorite once again. The Belgian is the best cobbler on paper, and also has an advantage with his good hill stat. Supported by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Geert Steurs, it will be hard for the contenders to do anything about him. The only rider that in fact can match his hill stat of the better cobblers is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Nick Nuyens. On a good day, the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Gazelle-rider will be a tough contender for the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/qst.png Quickstep-team.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kzi.png Fabien Taillefour is on home soil in France. Although lacking both a good hill and sprint stat, the Frenchman might get lucky on an early attack. From Britain, we have i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Geraint Thomas who is leading the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/b3b.png Boeing-team. His decent finish might come in handy on the four stages likely to end in a mass sprint. That goes especially for the first stage where the early cobbles might shake up some of the better sprinters. Also wanting a good result here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Nikolas Maes and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Marc Machado, two great cobblers we cannot rule out in the battle for victory.

Moving on to the outsiders, three teams come to France with some interesting duo combinations, starting with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Team Hornbach's i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Matteo Trentin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Maarten Wynants. Especially i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Trentin is an interesting rider due to his strong finish. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Heineken - Cal Giant also have a strong duo in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Damien Gaudin and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Sebastian Langeveld who both are capable of scoring high. Finally, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Azzedine Lagab is leading the i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Jaguar-team. They also have i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Amadou Bakari on the startline, a rider we never can let go unmentioned when there is cobbles on the route.

The Sprinters

Some teams might be disappointed to learn that i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/cal.png Dan Holloway is on the startline in 5 Jours de Dunkerque. The Americans has had a good season so far and will be hoping to get a win or two here as well. He will face tough competition in i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rbc.png Romain Vanderbiest and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/lvc.png Heinrich Haussler. The latter won three stages here back in 2012. He will be hoping to recreate that performance this year, something the opposition surely will keep in mind.

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Greg Van Avermaet, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Anthony Lavoine, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/pbn.png Kobe Vanoverschelde and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/abc.png Jaime Alberto Casteñada also come here with ambitions of a stage win. On paper, they are all equally fast and fully capable of winning stages. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/ven.png Greg Van Avermaet also has a decent cobble-stat to back him up, making him capable of a decent GC result as well if he can gather enough bonus seconds.

I expect Haussler to disappoint me again. That is all Pfft

Lagab has been good this season, and it's another race that suits him. Bakari to win though, obviously

Stage 1: Unrealistic mid-stage break with Vaitkus to take 10 mins please...

If that doesn't happen Kobe will fail my race here. At least I brought Super Cypriot Marios Athanasiades Smile

Thanks for the speed of the races Sykkel, unbelievable!

Our big goal, if Baugnies doesn't win this race ....better not too think about that, but it won't be nice.

The team is made for Baugnies so he better deliver.

Our most acheivable Goal Race. Thomas must get a Top5 here, unless we repeat last years madness of odd, yet good, results

Lots of 80 sprinters around, but no actual big favourite beyond that. Makes me hope Giaux is considered a sprinter worth participating, in which case who knows what we can take from this.
For the cobbled stage, we have a few guys for a possible mid-stage break in Declerq with a good hill stat too and Ringheim+Giaux.

AMEXpc has sent their young and underachieving sprint squad to Dunkerque. No chance to do well in the GC just hoping to pick up a few points in the sprint stages. It's about time for Grillo to earn his salary.

Nice to see so many of the cobbler's here in France. AMEX chose to send their cobble boys to the Avila Classic. 10-12 of the top OCT cobblers are here. I think we made a good choice to go after Avila and not split the cobble squad to go after both races. We will see.

Surely a chance for Vanderbiest with his nationality bonus to hopefully be near on 4/5 stages apart from that Machado to do nothing.

Hmm that was well weird. But I guess weird it's just normal for PCM AI.

Not sure whether to be happy about this situation, I hope the AI doesn't make De Maar our leader now...

Haussler finally with a stage win, and in a HC race as well Grin

Turgot in 4th is more handy points, 42 points from one stage is a good start.

A handful of points for Shishelov already, nice job to get a jersey as well especially as he can possibly keep that for another two stages. Sadly can't expect a lot more here.

Giaux though...145th?? I mean okay that slowing down fucked things up (gave Shishelov a chance to hang on on the other hand), but that happened in the last 10k and by then he should've already been close to the front.
Oh well, can't argue too much if it's a one-off, points are points.

Paride Grillo delivers AMEX 22 points on a sprint stage. Bank them boys.

If we can get just one more decent day and steal just a few points in the GC or points category overall this will be a very good effort here in Dunkerque.

Interesting tour. I hope stage 4 is very selective and a cobbler wins the GC. Nuyens should be strong there indeed.

Weird sprint in stage 1. Guess it helped Oss get a decent result, so that's nice. Pfft

AMEX's stage 2 was not as good as stage 1 with Paride Grillo slipping from 2nd to 6th on the stage but holding his 2nd place in the GC standings.

Wish our young sprinters were able to give him some help but obviously they are not up to that task.

Hopefully we can get Godet into stage 3's breakaway to protect Grillo's points position.

Nice podium by Lay. I'm still baffled why Hategeka sprinted on stage 1 but Lay wasn't there?

We have no desire to be in this race, it just happened to be in our HC bracket. But with PCM AI and these crazy breakaway wins, we do stand a chance Pfft

Thanks Sykkel for your recent contribution and quick reports. It's very much appreciated! Smile
