PCM 2008 Discussion
roadie
Hi all, I thought I would open a new thread to discuss the upcoming release of PCM 2008.
Points and issues we can raise here.

-New information about the release. Fact or Fiction/Rumour
-Any open discussions with developers.
-Things we know about the game
-Things we know about the game but dont like
-Things we dont know about the game
-Things we'd like to have incorporated

roadie
I'd like to get the ball rolling.

Having looked at the new 3D rider model in the PCM Viewer.

1st concern, they havent incorporated any of the accessories, helmet , bike etc.
I would've like to have seen all this before its release. We should have a chance to debate all the import issues before its released. That's generally what game forums are for.

Im hoping they are going to incorporate framed style glasses because all the features are larger than with 06 and 07. Just putting sunglass over the face looks completely stupid in PCM Viewer. I've tested it already

I'd like to know more about equipment. Are they going to expand the options or are we again stuck with the same as previous releases. There are more manufacuturers in the market place and more teams are steering away from the big 4. ( Mavic, Shimano, Campagnolo, Fulcrum) due to budget constraints. Will the game also move with the times???

Will the race calendar be expanded for 2008???

A big factor..i think would be one texture per rider..more realismB)

2nd point - I'd also like the system of timing revised. Ive made this point before, but I'd really like to see more of a "real-time" method put into place. Especially for time trials. A clock intergrated with the interface that gives you splits for all riders. Their time on the course. Intervals and finish. Its what real coaches have.

roadie
Yes! that's one big question that I would've wished Crue would've asked in the interview last week. I definately think it should be brought back. It enables more individualisation for each rider. Not only the face, but other things to. Helps you kit out National Champions, the way they are currently.

I'd also like to see a return to the hierarchical menu they used in PCM2006. Having an important part of the game in another part of your C: drive was a completely stupid idea.

It's already in the game...bring up the "information" screen and look in the "sprints" tab

thanks for your input iss. But that's not what I meant. I meant "intergrated into the interface." You shouldnt have to fumble through menus to go find important, relevant information.

Something smaller an less significant. I'd really love the clock at the finish line to work....

even on a couple of riders like say..cancellara or bettini would be good.

Well, considering the number of riders in the race, it'd be kind of hard to get it all in another place.

What I could suggest would be a list of the top 10 GC placed riders with splits and buttons for adding/removing to/from the list whoever else's splits you want to see.

Also, besides the "events messages" at the bottom, maybe a place that lists the time of the most recent rider to pass at each checkpoint

Well if you can click on a rider and have their name, team come up, then it should be possible to also add a time element. I guess if the game becomes more tactical and more management friendly, then the methods made available should also marry up. When a rider takes on a time trial. Say a GC rider, then the Manager is usually sitting in a car behind yelling out splits. If opposition riders have already completed that part of the stage, then the Manager has that information available. He then communicates this to the rider on the road, who then measures his effort accordingly.

What phases me is in the releases we've had to date, it just appears that not much attention is paid to the Time Trial. When infact as most Major Tour riders and Managers know a Time Trial is crucial to that riders success in the Tour. Its a very tactical part and Cyanide havent really paid much attention to it. There should be more information. More technology and more Management intergrated into this part of the game.

There is also no physical training for this. Not as a team or an individual. Enough of the talk about incorporating track racing, cyclocross etc. How about getting the fundamentals of road racing correct before you move onto other fields. I would seriously like to see physical 3D interaction with my team. Push them to their limits and see how they react. This shouldnt be a simulation....

They did up the complexity quite a bit to make it more fun. It drew an enormous amount of complaints because most people didn't understand the concept of when to use a bigger or smaller gear. So they took it out.

It was interesting to read in the interview that they are not providing an editor. Is this a message for the future I wonder. Will they at some point take away the open source nature of this game to the point where it becomes WYSIWYG????

How disappointing that would be...

Im seriously hoping that they have dedicated more time to the graphics. Those pundits that wanted more Management got their version in PCM2007. I would honestly like to see something revolutionary. More quality in the bike frames, wheels etc. Better scenery and better finishlines, vis-a-vie Miya's TDF.

I think Miya proved that with a little effort you can make the impossible. I hope Cyanide have taken notes.

Actually WYSIWYG is something different. and it would mean immensely easier editing.

But no, they just can't be bothered. Despite that, they won't make editing difficult as it would kill the game's sales long-time.

@iss,
I understand WYSIWYG, but you misunderstood the context. I meant it to be a more closed type of release. If they're not going to provide editors, what next??

issoisso
I know what you meant. I was just pointing to the fact that WYSIWYG is a type of editor in itself Smile

but hey, fell free to make up new uses for the word Wink

And I only ever remember them providing an editor once Rolling Eyes

What you see is what you get!!! is a very universal term. It even predates the information technology revolution of the 1980's and 90's when WYSIWYG editors became the norm...

For a point of clarification yes I meant it to be more of an "out of the box" type of experience. But you are right. If they removed the option to edit altogether, then it would indeed be the death of PCM.

I honestly dont think it a wise idea to incorporate new cycling genres into this release. They would've been better served to have invested more time in improving the all round performance of PCM before venturing off into another dimension. Perhaps it wouldve been better to have kept them as 2 seperate releases.
Instead they should've incorpated the Olympic Road Race and TT into this version as something different.
