Why Sim Time Trials?
SportingNonsense
Id like to ask why some people feel that they should simulate time trials instead of playing them.

I, personally, look forward to Time Trials and they are the most interesting types of stages for me, so I cant see why people simm them.

I, like you, do play TT's and very, very rarely sim in general.
i think some people sim them because they feel they simply aren't good at them, or i have heard some people say that they sim them to get unrealistic results

To me, it depends if it is a time trial in a spanish race in february/march, or if it is in the Tour. It also depends on if my team leader is a good or a bad time-trialist, because the results are often much more realistic if you plays them. If you have a good tt'ist and you play the stage is it maybe just one, two, maybe three riders within a minute, on a long TT. If you sim it is it maybe 20 riders inside a minute, on 50 km. Thats not realistic!

Huh.. a long post, hope you see my point Pfft

I play them because when i sim them i always seem to lose a huge amount of time.

issoisso
play, definitely. simulating usually results in unbelievably wrong results over long distances.

over short ones (under 5 km) though, simulating seems more realistic.

Well, I also like to play the TT instead of sim, but it depends on which race it is in, and what my objectives for the race is.

If it is a grand tour, i will definately play the TT, because that way I always seem to get the best results. If it is a minor race, and I don't have any good Time Trialists, i will most likely justy sim TT...

Do not sim them because you can do much better than the AI can do for your riders. Of course sim them if you have no contenders for the GC of riders with good TT-skills.

I always play the tt's and the ttt's as well. You can do so much better. You can beat a rider with 82 in tt with a rider with 75, if the opponent isn't in his best shape. The AI don't ride good tt's they always use all there energy and drive 3km with emty blue bar, then they lose the counting seconds Wink

It's easy Pfft

i play them if I have a reasonable chance of winning or if I am in contention for overall GC. If i have no chance, I'll sim them just to get on with the race. But I do enjoy ITTs lots B)

I don't play TTTs because I never learned how to race them effectively. I don't know how long to set each rider, what % effort to run them at etc. And with TTTs, there is no way to test the course like you can with weaker riders in ITTs.

I think the AI does a reasonable job running riders on other teams on flat ITTs. On hard level, I barely lost with Dekker to Reus in the Dutch ITT championships even though their TT levels are comparable. The AI does not do a good job on hilly ITTs though, particularly stages with a big hill in the middle. In those races, I can put serious pain on the other teams even with riders with poor TT skills. So if anything could be improved by the AI, I'd say it's hilly ITTs.

@cmfos and crueWink.

Yeah, one thing is missing on this page.

A guide for TTT - cause I have never figured out how to do these and I always sim them - but I think they could be fun if I just knew how to ride them.......

A general TTT tactic is to have your stronger TTers relay for more seconds and your weaker for less.

gardner
Yeah, but how much and for how long?

Well i havent done a TTT for a while, so let me think. Im pretty sure the default is 10 seconds. Any riders with 70 or above I tend to do mnore than 10, with 80 skills being 20 seconds. 50-64 TT skill I put on the minimum or close to the minimum and 65-70 i put somewhere between 7 or 10.

I keep all the riders on the same percentage, sometimes increasing the percentage of my strongest guy and increasing all to 99 near the finish - unless in danger of losing 5th man.

To start off with, I can quote the Career Guide:
-- Team Time Trials. I've had some luck with the following strategy: increase everyone's effort to 85-88. Put your best riders on 15-17 second relays, your worst on 5-second ones. If a rider's blue bar is lower than his green bar, feel free to cancel his relay -- you can win a TTT with most of the relays done by 5-6 riders, and the last few done by 3 riders. You will lose a rider or two this way but the team will do well. (Note: at effort 88 2 or more riders will not finish with the group, which may be fine if they have no GC hopes).

This is my setup for TTT's, of course length of TTT will need variations and on the fly adjustments: I feel I am fairly successful, able to win on Hard with only 3 70+ TTT'rs

First of all, I set the time they all pull at according to their TT skill:
70 is my baseline for 10 seconds, add 1 second for each increase in stat,
so 75 stat is 15 seconds
I do the same if they are below 70,
so 65 stat takes turns for 5 seconds.

On longer time trials, I take the top 4 time trialists or anyone over 70+, and they are the only ones taking turns for the first 1/3 of the race. I usually start everyone at 75 or 80% depending on the length of the time trial. I click up to 80 or 85% at the first time check. At the second time check, usually I can go 91%, putting most of the cyclists just under the red, and at this point I let all the cyclists take their turns. When I feel I can get 5 riders across the line together, I go to 99%. Every once in awhile, I will drop down to 4 riders, but most of the time, it works well.

Granted not very realistic in that not everyone pulls in the beginning ...

I used to go for realism and I would wear out the weaker men first, them taking longer turns until they were dropped, and I rode down to the top 5 and tried to go from there, but losing grand tours because your TTT sucks was too agonizing.

Thanx,

Ill try it one day when the result does not matter that much. I guess it takes some tries before you know the drill.

SportingNonsense
Why dont you practice it in single player? I played the eindhoven TTT on a few occasions when I first got the game.

gardner
Yep, then the result does not matter Smile
