This is one of the oldest teams in the peloton established back in 1994 and riding under this name since 1998.
For most of this period we have been almost exclusively comprised of Basque riders and as a result of that a team for the mountains known for attacking riding.
Due to UCI-rules we have had to change that a bit over the last few seasons, but now we want to get back to our roots!
I have a vision of a 90 % Basque team able to compete at the highest level. We might supplement the team with a few foreign riders so that we won't have to punish just as many riders by forcing them to ride on the cobbles.
As of now it is unknown whether we will get the chance to get rid of any of the foreigners currently on the team, but we hope to be able to make some new signings of riders with a connection to the Basque Country, the neighbouring region of Navarra or other places fighting for its independence.

The team was founded back in 1994 as a way of giving young Basque riders a team to ride on aiming to be a stepping stone for them to bigger teams.
To get on the team a rider had to be either born in PaÃs Vasco or having ridden there on amateur/youth level at least three years.
The first few years it was Basque riders from other teams but with the emergence of Roberto Laiseka the team grew in capabilities and importance. And since then there has been no looking back.
The last couple of years the team has been threatened by new UCI rules and has been forced to include other nationalities ultimately threatening the teams right to exist.

I would like to announce to the public that Euskaltel - Euskadi is on the lookout for some talented youngsters. Obviously our main geographical focus is Basque Country (Spanish and French) and Navarra.
In the Spanish races our Spanish riders will be given first priority leaving races like the spring classics and the Tour open for outsiders.
We have decided though to be open for the internationalization of the sport. To certain limits that is...
We would like to be a team promoting peoples fight for independence. Therefore we will include riders from areas fighting for independence (e.g. Scotland of Kurdistan) or recently independent countries (e.g. Ireland) on equal footing.
Naturally all riders will have to acknowledge the Basque right of independence.

Hello Euskaldunak! My name is Rudy Verboven, and I'll be joining the team this year. I'm a Flemish rider, and I love the classics. My favourite races are on the cobbled hills in Belgium. I grew up with cyclists such as Johan Museeuw, Frank Vandenbroucke, and more recently Tom Boonen and Philippe Gilbert, to look up to. My parents bought me a racing bike for my 16th birthday, and I loved cycling like nothing else.
Of course I was amazed that a ProTour team immediatly picked me up, and the terms they offered me were incredibly generous, so I didn't need to think about it much. "Just tell me where to sign already!", I remember saying. I'm proud to be part of this team, and will do my best
Now why Euskaltel, you might ask. They have a history of punishing underperforming riders by sending them to Roubaix or other cobbled classics. I'll get little or no support here. I'm aware of that. But it doesn't matter, it means I can go my own chances, while it wouldn't be the same in other teams. But what matters most is the project. The manager has convinced me this is the right team, not just for me, but for any cyclist.
And the fans, well the fans are incredible. I remember them waving their flags on tv, the orange sea the riders had to go through on the mountain stages. This is more than just a cycling team, and I hope I can be a part of this project. Who knows, maybe they'll even come cheer for me on the Koppenberg!
I hope to announce my schedule later on. I'm hoping to ride a lot of classics, and maybe a few stage races too. I know the team doesn't have a history in cobbled races, but I hope I do get a few preparation races, and then we'll see where I end in the big races!

The greatest cobbler ever on the team!
First of all we are very happy to confirm the signing of Rudy Verboven. The greatest cobbler to ever wear the orange jersey!
Some of you might wonder why we have signed a Belgian of all things - after all Belgium and Pais Basque bear little resemblance to the casual observer. We are completely aware of that.
Does that mean then that we have already given up on our ideals? Off course not!
We have had lengthy considerations and have talked the matter through with Rudy before even considering signing him. Rudy is not Belgian - he is Flemish. From a region caught in a dysfunctional nation (sound familiar?) he fits the bill perfectly.
Verboven does not only support the Basque cause - we also support the Flemish claims of independence!
Rumours of disloyalty on the team!
We have been made aware that the desperate actions of last years management may have resulted in a very disturbing situation.
Rumours has it that one or more riders on the team believe in imperialism and does not support small regions fighting for independence.
Naturally that is unacceptable on this team and we are currently undergoing investigations to get to the bottom of the matter.
Any knowledge on the matter from the public will be highly appreciated!

Hope the others have made you feel welcome at the team already. I know Basque sounds a bit weird, but being used to Flemish I expect you'll soon enough get used to it...
I don't know for sure how many more wildcards we will have to apply for but sure we'll try and make sure there's a few races for your abilities. That will help your back-up team getting used to the terrain as well I suppose.

Another Aggressive Climber
As some of you probably already have heard we have signed another rider.
This time one more classic for the team. Cristiano de los Campos was born in Navarra and raised in PaÃs Basque. He is a strong climber with a nice aggressive way of riding. Put those things into an equation and out comes a contract with Euskaltel - Euskadi...
Cristiano will race some races as a luxury domestique, but he will also get his own chance in some of the smaller races throughout the season. Unless of course he proves strong enough to captain some of the big ones...
We are looking very much forward to working with Cristiano.

The Plot Thickens
As mentioned a few days ago we had suspicions that a supporter of imperialism had found his way to the team during last years contract panic. Since then we have been working hard to figure out the situation and are extremely sad to say that we have found it to be true.
Tucked away behind one of the toilets in the team HQ we found an issue of The Imperialist Weekly. To make it worse it was a tribute magazine to the deceased Spanish oppressor General Franco. This is naturally a very serious matter to us!
We have had serious talks with all of our riders to find the culprit. Obviously it has to be one of the foreigners, who arrived last year. It would be unthinkable for it to be one of the regulars.
We have freed the Slovenians as they have seen how their nation has flourished after getting independent from Yugoslavia. Just watching how their eyes it up when they spoke about their countries independence made us very confident that they were behind our cause.
It has been many years since Greece showed any noteable interest in colonilizations and border expansions. So Tamouridis has been raised as a peaceful man praising Democracy and as such he is in the clear as well.
Chaoufi is from a former French colony and as such a kindred spirit for the Basque.
That means we are down to four suspects. The investigations are ongoing and we have the lawyers working on the legal aspect of the case.
We are determined to find the culprit, so we can restore the pureness of the team!
