Today starts the Liga ZON Sagres, the fifth league of Europe in UEFA coefficients only behind Spain, England, Germany and Italy.

After last year FC Porto beat Benfica on the penultimate game to get to the front of the championship with a goal on the 91st minute, these two are the big candidates to win it this year again.

FC Porto already won the Supertaça (between the winner of the league and the winner of the Portuguese Cup) beating Vitória de Guimarães by 3-0.

FC Porto

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/fcporto_zps5f3061ab.jpg

The departures of James Rodriguez and João Moutinho gave Porto 70 M€. And the team invested around 24 M€ to replace them and secure some future values both portuguese and south american.

Key - Players:

- Jackson Martinez - last year best scorer with 26 goals is still not sure to continue, with many teams interested. He should double his wage if he stays.

- Lucho Gonzalez - the team captain who last year returned from Marseille giving up a part of his salary is a team symbol and the true leader.

- Eliaquim Mangala - the french center back who grabbed the place last year on his second season is wanted by many big teams and if he also stays should be a grant of security together with Otamendí.

New hopes

- Juan Quintero - the 20 year old colombian should have the task to replace James Rodriguez. He played in Europe last year in Pescara and costed 5 M€.

- Nabil Ghilas - Porto also got some of the best players on portuguese league, like this 23 year old striker who scored 13 goals for Moreirense last season and showed a great form convincing Porto to pay 3 M€ for him

- Hector Herrera, Diego Reyes - a midfielder and a central defender who costed 8 and 6 M€ and who played on Mexican championship. They are both young, 23 and 20 years old, and they are both two promising mexican players.

Team Objectives:

- winning all the internal competitions and getting at least to quarter finals of the Champions League

- with a young new coach, Paulo Fonseca, who last year got Paços de Ferreira to a historical 3rd place and a Champions League place, Porto will want to keep dominating the portuguese football.

SL Benfica

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/benfica_zps7e702d4b.jpg

After losing the league on the last three years to Porto and last year losing everything on the last 3 weeks of the season (league to Porto, Europa league to Chelsea and Portuguese Cup to Guimarães) Benfica president decided to keep the coach, Jorge Jesus, who is going to his 5th season ahead of the team.

With an income of about 4 M€ on transfers this year, the incompatibility between Óscar Cardozo, who has scored 105 goals on the last 6 seasons, and the team coach, it was expected a 15 M€ transfer who has not happened yet. So Cardozo can still stay. Also the argentinian Garay can still be transferred for more than 10 M€.
Benfica invested almost 25 M€ so far, with the serbian Markovic costing 10 M€.

Key players

- Lima - A very complete striker who scored more than Cardozo on the league last season, with 20 goals, seemed to have grabbed completely the place on the attack.

- Eduardo Salvio - The winger returned last season for 11 M€ and made a great season scoring 11 goals. He is one of those players that always plays good and at the age of 23 he should have another great season.

- Luisão - The captain and leader of the team is about to start his 11th season on Benfica. The big guy is the commander on the field and despite his age and lack of speed, his experience is vital to Benfica defense.

New hopes

- Lazar Markovic - The serbian teenager has been compared to best player on the portuguese football, Eusebio. He was expensive but by the first impressions he should be a great reinforcement.

- Filip Djuricic - Another serbian that is expected to be the natural heir of Rui Costa and Pablo Aimar. After 4 years in Heerenveen he comes to Portugal to grow up as a player and the investment of 6 M€ should have its return quickly.

- Lisandro Lopez - Maybe predicting the sale of Garay, Benfica spent 4 M€ on this defender from Arsenal of Argentina.

- Miralem Sulejmani - In 2008 Ajax payed around 16 M€ on what was the record transfer on dutch football. 5 years later and after a season where he just played 5 matches he arrives for free to Benfica. He will have fierce competition to get a place, but at 24 he should have the experience to impose himself.

Team Objectives

- like Porto, winning everything in Portugal and trying to get as far as possible on Champions League. A relegation to Europa League like last season might make the team get to a late stage of the competition.

FC Paços de Ferreira

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/paccedilosferreira_zps031ebe1b.jpg

The biggest surprise on portuguese football last year got them a place on the Champions League playoff where they will face the millionaires of Zenith St. Petersburg. A small team with a stadium with capacity for just 4320 it will be very hard for them to repeat last season.

Only one transfer involved money with the sale of Antunes to Málaga for 1.5 M€.

Key players

- Caetano - The 22 year old is a small player with a lost of speed and technique. A big figure on the 2011 Under-20 world cup where Portugal were runners-up, the young forward is set to explode this season.

- Manuel José - Last season the 32 year old midfielder scored 8 goals. The team leader should use his experience to help the team.

New Hopes

- Carlão - With 5 years experience on the portuguese football, the 27 year striker comes from Sp. Braga and should be the goal scorer the team needs.

- Jhon Pajoy - A striker who comes from Atletico Nacional of Colombia with 24 years old and who wants to triumph in Europe.

- Rui Miguel - After playing in Russia, Romania and Cyprus, the portuguese midfielder returns to his country at the age of 29.

Team Objectives

- Repeating last season is almost impossible so a qualification to the European competitions should be a achievable. On the cup everything is possible.

- Going to the groups phase is almost impossible against Zenith (who spent about 100 M€ last season in Portugal with just Hulk and Witsel), but in Europa League they might go through the groups phase.

Sporting Clube de Braga

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/spbraga_zps0b9f52a9.jpg

On the last seasons they got 2nd, 3rd and 4th. They also achieve an Europa League final (lost to FC Porto in 2011). So this is a team who is getting between the first places with regularity with a very intelligence choice of players.

Like Paços de Ferreira they only had 1 transfer involving fees with the sale of Mossoró to Saudi Arabia for 3.5 M€.

Key players

- Éder - Injuries stop the 25 year old striker last season, but still he scored 13 goals on 18 matches. This year he should confirm the form that got him to portuguese national team.

- Alan - At the age of 33 he is going to his 6th season in Braga. He is the leader and a symbol from the club. He should play on the middle this year despite he is a winger who scored 23 goals on the last 5 seasons.

- Baiano - Last season the 26 year old defender got his place and now seems to be the leader on Braga's defense.

New Hopes

- Eduardo - The goalkeeper returns to the place where he got his best shape before loses to Rui Patrício the place on portuguese national team. At the age of 30 this loan is very important for both him and the team.

- Salvador Agra - After two seasons on Bétis and Siena, the 21 year old winger is one of the most promising players in Portugal. A very strong left foot quick this might be the season where he will explode.

- Edinho - After signing for Málaga on 2011 he returned on loan to Portugal and last season he scored 13 goals in Academica. He should fight with Éder for a place and the 31 year old striker is a very experienced play who can score.

Team objectives

- Jesualdo Ferreira, who trained Benfica, was three times champion on Porto, coached Sporting last year return to Braga where he had been between 2003 and 2006.

- Sp. Braga should fight for a Champions League place (3rd place) and can win the cup.

- On Europa League, Braga has experience and should be hard to beat. They're first opponent is Pandurii from Romania, which should not be too hard.

Sporting Clube de Portugal

i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o621/kimiopn/sporting_zpsacf230ab.jpg

After the worst season on the team history with a negative record of 7th place and for the first time out the european competitions, Sporting had to cut the investment and use their academy talents. That might be the secret to return to the top.

Against the 25 M€ invested by Benfica and Porto, Sporting only spent 1.5 M€ (against 8 M€ last season and 28 M€ 2 years ago) having sold their best scorer, Ricky Van Wolkswinkel to Norwich for 10 M€ and Schaars and Arias to PSV for 1.5 M€.

Key Players

- Rui Patrício - At the age of 25 he holds his place for 6 seasons. He is a symbol to the team who won't sell him for less than 15 M€. If he stays Sporting has the security of one of the best european goalkeepers.

- Marcos Rojo - After a bad start last year, the argentinian international improved on the second half of the season and might justify this year the 4 million spent on his transfer.

- André Martins - The most recent product of Sporting academy reaching the national team seems to have his place on midfield and with 23 years this might be his season.

- Diego Capel - The most successful acquisition from last years, the spanish winger is one of the most dangerous and most loved by the fans on Sporting team.

The guy who is considered the most promising player on portuguese football, 18 year old borned in Guinea, Bruma has decided to break his connection with Sporting on the argument that he has no valid contract. The decision is on courts with the names of Porto and Benfica involved if he doesn't stay or even Real Madrid or Chelsea everything can happen.

New Hopes

- Fredy Montero - At the age of 26 this striker arrives to Europe and Sporting trust him to score a lot of goals. He comes on loan from Millionarios with Sporting having the option to buy him.

- Gerson Magrão - After Feyenoord and Dynamo Kiev, the brasilian starts his 3rd european experience and seems to have grabbed a place on Sporting midfield.

- Maurício - Known in Brazil to be a hard defender he seems to have granted his place on Sporting defensive. With 24 years he costed 350 k€.

- Islam Slimani - The last reinforcement from Sporting is a striker loved in Algeria. Because Montero is not a typical striker he comes to fill a gap the team had. Costed 400 k€.

Team objectives

- It's not hard to do better than last season and the 3rd place is perfectly achievable. Leonardo Jardim, who did great in Braga, is the man who has the mission to deliver Sporting back to the glory days. Sporting fans (like myself) always want to win but the team need to build a solid project to regain it's place.

- After last year Bruma and Tiago Ilori having been launched on the first team without having solid contracts, the new Boarder decided to only launch players after protecting the teams interest. Expect to see some young future greats playing this year: Ruben Semedo (19), Eric Dier (19), William Carvalho (21), Tobias Figueiredo (19), Fabrice Fokobo (19), Edi Ié (19), João Mário (20), Luka Stojanovic (19), Filipe Chaby (19), Ricardo Esgaio (20), Iuri Medeiros (19), Betinho (20) or Cristian Ponde (18).

Rest of the teams

No other team have spent money on transfers, signing only free players.

Estoril is on Europa League after a great start on Liga ZON Sagres with a 5th place that should be hard to repeat.

Vitória de Guimarães is one of the most supported teams in Portugal, always with full stadium but again with low money to invest. After winning the cup they should try to get another European Classification.

Rio Ave was after Paços de Ferreira and Estoril, the great surprise of the season with their 6th place. Also will be hard to repeat.

Madeira teams, Marítimo and Nacional are traditionally hard teams who are candidates to European competitions but both failed last season. They will try to correct that.

Académica, Vitória de Setúbal, Gil Vicente and Olhanense should fight for keeping themselves on the Liga ZON Sagres.

Belenenses is an historical portuguese club (one of the 5 teams to have ever won the league with Porto, Benfica, Sporting and Boavista) who is back after a great season on second division,

Arouca is a very small team who is on the first division for the first time and their objectives can't be other than fighting for surviving.

The first matches are:

Paços de Ferreira - Sporting de Braga
Estoril - Nacional
Vitória de Guimarães - Olhanense
Sporting - Arouca
Belenenses - Rio Ave
Gil Vicente - Académica
Marítimo - Benfica
Vitória de Setúbal - FC Porto

Nice to see a topic about our league here. Pfft Hope you don't mind but I thought of writing a small analysis on the players to look for this season... hope for some of them I'm not mistaken... Pfft

A thread for portuguese league, like it. 8) Good analisys as well.
Oh well, Luis Filipe Vieira is the dumbest person on the planet. I'm out. Pfft

I knew you two would see this thread. Maybe people from other countries see it too.

FreitasPCM - that's a good idea. Sporting has all those names i mentioned and let's see if we can identify some future star. What's your team?

Miguel98 - I hope you're not a Benfica fan calling dumb to your president

FreitasPCM
Well, I'm a Sporting and Belenenses fan mostly, but not really a crazy crazy fan, these two clubs have been really close to me since my childhood that's why I root for them right now. Hopefuly Belenenses can stick to a top-10 position this year, and Sporting return to the European competitions. And sometimes, due to a bit of nationalism, I also hope Benfica and Braga succeed in Europe, not much in Portugal. Pfft I'll start writing some analysis for some players to watch this season, I've thought of some right now, hope they don't disappoint! Smile

Poor Paços, fell already sorry for them and what's going to happen with them against Zenit.

Matchday 1

The three big clubs started their games losing but while FC Porto and Sporting turn the result around, Benfica got their first defeat in Madeira.

Paços de Ferreira - Sporting de Braga 0-2
Estoril - Nacional 3-1
Vitória de Guimarães - Olhanense 2-0
Sporting - Arouca 5-1
Belenenses - Rio Ave 0-3
Gil Vicente - Académica 2-0
Marítimo - Benfica 2-1
Vitória de Setúbal - FC Porto 1-3

The referees performance's will be reason to discuss, specially Setúbal-Porto where a penalty and a red card to the home team goalkeeper when Porto was losing changed the fate of the game. The young colombian Quintero started in great scoring an amazing goal just 1 minute after he entered.

Benfica claims a not-signed penalty on the last minute but the exhibition was poor. The absences of Salvio and Markovic can't explain it all.

Sporting entered losing but a great start from Freddy Montero got them a large win. The colombian scored 3 goals on his first official appearance and promises a great season.

Round 2

On the second round of the portuguese league Sporting and Porto continued in great style, getting large wins. Rio Ave, Estoril and Braga also got their 2nd win. Benfica came from hell to heaven in 2 minutes on the extra time, getting a 2-1 home win before the game with Sporting next week. Paços de Ferreira is having a disappointing start with their 2nd defeat, together with a 1-4 lost against Zenith on the Champions League playoff.

Olhanense - P. Ferreira 1-0
Académica - Sporting 0-4
Rio Ave - V. Setúbal 2-0
Nacional - V. Guimarães 1-1
Benfica - Gil Vicente 2-1
Arouca - Estoril 1-2
FC Porto - Marítimo 3-0
Sp. Braga - Belenenses 2-1

Since 2002 (the year of the last title) that Sporting wasn't leader for 2 consecutive games. The 9-1 on the first two games is the best start of on the portuguese league for 40 years. After the worst season of the club history this is a great come back. Next week we'll have a Sporting - Benfica that should clear things up about their objectives for the season.

Paços manager, Costinha probably won't last long in charge, awful, awful. Benfica is shit, Luisão and Maxi are shittier, Lima is dumb and currently Sporting and Porto look the best. For next week's derby, I'll bet on a Sporting win, do not know by how much tough. But with Carrilo vs Maxi, boy, Carrilo is going to have the time of his life.

Round 3

And the classic ended up on a draw. After Sporting got a strong start until the 10th minute when Montero scored his 5th goal in three games (he was offside at the start of the play). Sporting pushed but didn't get a second. Benfica had bad luck with three injuries on minutes 42 (Pérez), 45+2 (Salvio) and 50 (Gaitán), but the changes had a very good effect on Benfica's game. Markovic scored a very classy goal to draw. Cardozo who was suspended since last year returned to play almost the whole second half. Benfica claims a penalty, Sporting claims a red card to Maxi Pereira. In the end 1-1.

FC Porto got a difficult win away with Paços de Ferreira by 1-0 and is now leading alone.

Braga had a terrible week after losing home on Europa League in extra time with Pandurii (0-1 in Romania and 0-2 in Braga), they lost with Gil Vicente playing against 9!!

Estoril draw and Rio Ave lost so the champions are first with Sporting 2 points behind.

V. Guimarães 1 - 4 V. Setúbal
Sporting 1 - 1 Benfica
Arouca 1 - 0 Rio Ave
Marítimo 1 - 1 Olhanense
Belenenses 2 - 3 Nacional
P. Ferreira 0 - 1 FC Porto
Gil Vicente 1 - 0 Sp. Braga
Estoril 1 - 1 Académica

Meanwhile the last day had some transfers but it's only ending at mid-night. I'll update the first post tomorrow.
