How do I beat Froom in the mountains? I am a newbie to this game and currently playing the TDF with the SaxoBank-Tinkoff team.
We are 7 or 8 stages into the race, so there are still plenty of mountain stages left. I am second in the General Standings with Contador - about 48 seconds behind Froom (I was also new to TTT) but have about 2 minutes to nr. 3.
My problem is now that Froom looks incredible strong and I was hoping you could help me with some guidance as to how to beat him in the mountains.
In my selected team I have Contador, Kreuziger, Roche, Rogers, Chris Anker Sørensen who are best in the mountains.
My team also consists of Mads Christensen, Matti Breschel, Rory Sutherland, Daniele Bennati.
I have tried to read through some articles to find good tips - the best option seems to be to take control of the pace early on in the stage and try to break the riders into small group, keeping all of my "mountain" riders in the front pack and when we get to the final mountain I use my mountain riders one by one to pace up the mountain and hope that Froom will either be dropped or will be left outnumbered - the problem with that strategy however, is that Frooms helpers are pretty strong in the mountains and so far Froom have just been sitting on the wheel of Contador, when I have tried to loose him - How to I get him isolated and where he has to use his strength so I can win back the 48 seconds I am trailing him?
I hope you can help |

We really can't give you an easy-to-do option here
You've read the tips, now it's up to you to use them.
If you're new into the game, I guess you're mostly lacking experience. Try some stuff out and you'll get better and then you'll beat him for sure! |

Fair point - that could easily end up being the outcome, but any hints / tips / experiences of what have worked well for you in similar situations are most welcome |

Well, in a situation like this, I hardly ever use my team (Froome's team too strong anyway). Look at Contador's strengths, depending on the database that's REC and ACC. So you could wait for the final mountain stages (higher rec so he'll be fresher than Froome) and then try to put some pressure on him. Either with a dot-attack (free efoort) high enough to kill everyone on the climb, or a longer attack, sending some team mates ahead in the first part of the race. |

I would personally say it's really realistic if you can't beat Froome! Because as far as i can see in the Tour at the moment, he's to damn strong |

Just make sure you dot Contador and Kreuz and 1 1other to the front on the base of the climb and then the favs will attack at the start o the climb and you protect Contador and dot until its just you and froome don't try to attack Froome(seeing as he is ahead you will have two because he wont attack you probably). |

Thanks for all your input - much appreciated.
I have only been playing PCM for a few weeks, but it is a great great game - There are so many things you need to pay attention to if you don't want to loose time - a great challenge. |

A good idea is to send a good climber in breakaway, so when favourites on last climb catch breakaway you will get another quite fresh teammate to protect your leader. |

Another good thing i'd try was is to have i.e kreuziger or roche protect Contador, then dot attack. That way kreuz will use his energy first. The moment he dies, try to attack?

You could also wait until you get a flat, windy stage and put your whole team on the front and steal a minute. |

Update - I tried several things - for example to protect both Contador and Kreuz so I would have two fit mountain riders for the mountain stages - for example to wait until the end of the stage to launch an attack. Contador is faster going down a mountain which I exploited a little bit (attacking at the top of the mountain and then trying to expand the lead down the mountain)
But Froome is simply too strong for me and my team - he keep catching up to me or seems to have endless energy to launch counter attack after counter attack.
I have noticed that I loose the most times during the TT, both individual and group, so I will practice some more of those types of stages before trying my luck at the TDF again to try and claim the victory for Contador again.
Tks for all your advice. |

What does it mean when you guys mention dot attacks? Is that with putting the effort up with the dot ?
Sorry |

Dot attack is using the dot indeed. Put a tough free effort. You can also attack to break away and as soon as you have, change to the dot 85. |

as soon as you.
1. use your attack power(red)?
2. Get a hole?
3. Or just right away after the attack?
4. Something else?
Are you always using dot 85 % ?? or what will you recommend? |

i found that the 'sky' tactic worked wonders for me
ie have the second best climber (Kreuziger) protect Contador while he sets around a 85 dot effort) then release him when Kreuziger's red bar empties
but it depends on your difficulty
so Contador 85 dot, with Kreuziger protecting him (99 effort, we're not trying to get 2 people on the podium in Paris)

You don't have to set your protector to 99 effort. The effort slider will be ignored and set automatically to match the effort of the rider you protect. |

Or you can take him down in downhill, like Contador tried yesterday.

Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to create a big gap as soon as possible, you use attack first. Gain a small hole (just enough so you're in different groups P - E1), put dot on 85, and you'll ride away. If the gap is big enough, to change the effort to a lower one.
But if you're 50 km from the finish, it's different. Then you adjust the dot level, because you won't last on 85 to the finish. At around 50 km I'd say 72 would suffice. You can play around with it a bit and learn about it. I sometimes start my mountain-mayhem on 65 km from the finish (when uphill) with dot 65 and my second best climber protecting me. I increase the dot slowly as I near the finish. |

Good suggestion - I will try that out.
@CMknudsen - If the stage ends up with a big mountain I usually start with Dot / effort 75 with Contador and have Kreuziger (or the most fresh montain rider) protect him until he runs out of energy - about 5 km before the finish I raise the effort to 85 - and sprint with 1 km to go - (defending on how much energy I have left in the end).
If you try to follow every attack up the mountain with your real attack button, you end up using too much energy and then Froome will run past you in the end - the best position is to be protected for as long as possible (until the rider who is protecting your best climber nearly runs out of energy) and then sit on the wheel on one of the big favorites - preferably Froom and let him pull you up the mountain.
But all this said - I am not very good at the game, so don't take my advice as the only solution - there are plenty of advice out there - the key thing is just to preserve as much energy as possible for your main montain rider for as long as possible.
Good luck |
