Sojasun in Tour de France
koningjantje
Honestly, i think the cycling team Sojasun doesn't have riders to win a stage in the Tour. That's why i doubt the fact that Sojasun is still allowed to participate in the Tour every year. I know it's a French Team, but i think the best 22 teams should participate, and i don't think Sojasun is one of the best 22.

How do you guys feel about this?

Honest opinion time.
Team Sojasun is terrible. I mean god-awful. Well, at least in comparison to the Pro Tour teams. Honestly, I think Europcar is the only good Conti.Pro team, but that doesn't matter now. Sojasun needs good Frenchmen, but there aren't any left. French cycling is still returning; no GT winner is among them. Only Rolland, Voeckler, Sy. Chavanel, and maybe Bouhanni/Demare can even win stages. It isn't like the team is included elsewhere; they only get invited to French Pro Tour races. Cofidis, Europcar, and Netapp take the rest in most cases. So yes they should participate, but they may not ever contest victory.

I think that the ASO should get to pick whatever teams they want to pick.
I mean the Giro always picks the Italian teams for wildcards. Same with the Vuelta and all WT races. According to your reasoning the WT should just be 22 teams.

Brice Feillu has won a stage before and they have some decent riders like Hivert, Simon and Engoulvent. Only Vini Fantini and IAM Cycling have more CQ-points from the non-participating teams. The organisers chooses the wild cards and Sojasun is French and one of the best PCT teams. IAM could've added more to the race with Haussler, Löfkvist, Larsson and Tschopp but that's just speculating.

I think they have a couple top 10's already and are getting in breakaways. If you compare that to some other PT teams and PCT teams, thats as good as most teams in the race so far.

On paper there are definitely better teams to bring, but I dont think you can say they've been awful.

I don't think Cofidis should be here also just my opinion

Cofidis at least brings Taramaee and Coppel, they're just out of form this year.

I'd rather say that they've both stagnated in their development.

Sure. They're one of the teams bringing some colour to the race with lots and lots of attacking. They open up the race and can easily win a stage from a breakaway.

In my opinion they have contributed more to the Tour this far than for example Lampre

@Atlantius That can be true, but I think participating in every breakaway isn't that hard. Any no-chance-of-victory team can simply send a rider away. The only thing the ASO cares about is french riders. The Italian teams focus more on the Giro, therefore they send their second team to the Tour. But these Lampre riders are still far better than Sojasun riders

By the way, Sojasun participates in the breakaway every day, but it is too often the Sojasun rider who can't keep up with others in the group. So it's only riding for advertisement. It has nothing to do with winning

Who would you send ahead of Cofidis and Sojasun.

I think only maybe IAM has a case to be in the Tour ahead of Sojasun.

And so then refer back to the Top 10 finishes that they've had a few times already this Tour.

This really shouldn't be a discussion imo. On paper sure, there are better teams, but not every team has to go for the GC and they're finishing pretty high up on most stages.

Sojasun are going for stage wins and high placing, just like Argos are, and so far Sojasun has had a few Top 10 places in the Tour, which I'm sure is actually better than some PT teams participating, one finish as high as 6th Im pretty sure. Add to that, they have been attacking and getting into the breakaway, and I think they've proven that they deserve the spot.

For those that dont think Sojasun should be in the Tour, tell me, which team do you think would have been a better addition and why?

Well I remember at least a couple of times already when a Sojasun rider has been the last one to fight. Admitted in hopeless situations, but someone has to chase the odd chance that the sprinter-teams screw up.

The racing would be extremely boring if all teams just chased either the GC or bunch sprints. Rather this than teams hoping to get a GC top 10 by being completely invisible...

I guess Simon today was secretly riding for another team then and not Sojasun?

Frankly they have done more so far than Cofidis this race and have every single right to be here. There performances have bee comparable to FDJ this race, and ahead of some WT teams here.
Without their Tour participation i doubt they would get the financial backing needed to function and would soon collapse as a team. There is a lot more to the Tour than the racing, and for many teams it means survival. Look at Europcar, there very existence is pretty much hanging on this race as well, and i'd guess the same for Cofidis, AG2R and FDJ (to varying degrees).

I've liked them so far. They have had a plucky spirit and have attacked lots. (Partly to get the sponsor some air time and pick up money from Sprint bonuses) They atleast bring some excitement to the race that many of the PT teams don't :cough: Sky :cough:...

I have seen Taaramae get dropped if that counts as seeing Cofidis...

No sight of Lampre on my part though Wink

Well Cofidis has been in the break a few times, but I agree about Lampre they have had one mention and that was Cunego cracking
