Despite not including a stage finishing atop a climb for the first time in it's five-year history, the Tour of Slovenia is looking tough as always. The climbers will have to use the climbs on stage 3 to launch a bid for overall victory, or they risk end up getting stumped by the time trial specialists in the closing TT held in the capital city of Ljubljana.
Two previous winners of the race are back for a record-breaking 2nd win, but only one of them has an actual chance of doing so - given that Julio Alberto Perez Cuapio now represents the infamous Control Team.
That means it's up to Jose Alarcon to try doing what he couldn't last year - repeat the overall victory from 2011. Due to his weakness against the clock, we should expect to see him very active on the third stage.
Other strong climbers present for the race include Gomez Marchante and Keizer. What's interesting about the latter is that he might actually play it defensive on the queen stage and save himself for the time trial.
It should however not be overlooked that the organisers have chosen to classify that stage as hilly rather than mountainous. It might not sound like any major difference, but it also means that puncheurs like Ben Nasser shouldn't be ruled out of the victory discussion.
And that's just a small selection of names capable of winning the race. A few others worth throwing in are Bibby, Boom, Konovalovas, Cornu and maybe even Martin.
There are also a couple of flat stages, which obviously means that a number of sprinters are interested in stage wins. Clarke, Bazayev and Drujon being the most notable names.

Surprised to see so many climbers here. Alarcon...?
Really hope that 3rd stage won`t be too selective and Boom can survive with the best. Than a top5 is possible. Otherwise I have no idea. |

Gil almost did it again in back to back races At least he gets the mountain jersey as consolation prize for his efforts today.

Thought i had Rogers send here Not sure what to expect this way. Hopefully we can score some points with our mid-level-puncheurs and of course the TT. Pretty surprised to see such strong climbers. Even though the hilly one looks though. Interesting it is.

Hoping that stage 3 is hard enough for Keizers mountain stat to be important, if that is the case he should win this race.
However, does anything go according to my plans this season?

Oh my... Seems like we are going to risk the same drama that we had in Czech Republic: bad positioning in the bunch, always fearing to get dropped in those flat stages.. And of course already a bad sign of what to expect for the hilly one: lose contact on first climb.
I somehow have a bad feeling that Peraud or Gerrans won't prove me wrong

Fair to say I am fuming with my team (Credexbank), what a mess of the stage they made, then Golas loses the wheel in the sprint, disaster for us so far in Slovenia, really hope it gets better because if can't possibly get much worse

Well that's just bloody fantastic Cornu. Drop back on an easy stage to help someone who had no change to win on this stage anyway. If Cornu doesn't win the time trial then this has been a huge waste of race days.

Due to a number of things getting in the way, I wont be able to get stage 3 up today.
I didn't see much point in stressing a quick, undetailed report, so I figured it's better to save it for tomorrow and make sure it's of decent quality. Will get to work on it as soon as I get home from work tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

Too bad Visconti went down, he would have been a decent TT-finisher for Oz.
Nice 4th by Lloyd though, but i guess he will lose his Top-10. Its up to Peraud to do well in the ITT, and of course im hoping for Olman/Ford to fight for the stage.

Kinda shocking TT by both Ford and Olman. Seems that the stages before were too tough for them.
But more important: Peraud finally delivered! 5th in GC is great, would not have expected him to finish that high - especially after that first stage. I still wonder why Rogers was not here but since he already failed hard in that hills in Czech Republic, it might have been the same disaster here. So Peraud, finally, thank you!
And also thanks for the quality reports, Pelli! Kinda sad to see less comments in the discussion threads these days, so i think it would be nice for some kind words on both preview and reports really enjoyed them, so thanks!

Seems like Boom suffers to podium in this years TT`s in comparison to last season.
But 3rd in the GC is nice and also Zabalo`s 11th is a good result.
Thanks for the nice reports, Pelli. Must have missed the 3rd stage before.
So I am pretty happy to see that Boom was able to hang on there. |

Thanks Pelli for the reports! Shame my team did horrible. Hopefully this bad luck doesn't carry over to the Tour de France or it's going to be a long 3 weeks.

This has turned into one of the best races of the year Keizer in first, and both Bøchman and Brandle in the top 10 (also winning team clasification and taking the double in the u-25 )

Thanks for the reports Pelli.
What a shit race from my team. This was Cornu's lowest priority race, but still he lost time on a pointless stage...
