BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The snobbery continues.
tonymcf
This belongs in the Sports section I feel.

As we approach that time of year, the shortlist was announced tonight. Now you'd expect the fact that Mark Cavendish gave British cycling a huge boost and something to cheer about wouldn't go amiss. Alas, it has.

On the list - Lewis Hamilton (easily the favourite). Boxers Calzaghe and Hatton. Paula Radcliffe. Justin Rose the golfer. Rugby World Cup runners up Jason Robinson and Jonny Wilkinson, James Toseland (World Superbikes Champion (his 2nd)), Tennis player Andy Murray. Finally Christine Ohuruogu. Yes THE Christine Ohuruogu who won 400m World Championship gold after returning from a "1 year" ban for missing THREE doping tests in 9 months.

I must point out that the public only votes for the winner, they don't decide the shortlist. It just goes to show the snobbery in Britain/UK when they stick a couple of runners-up in there along with a tennis player who spent several months injured and another bit getting back into the swing of things.

Christine Ohuruogu's selection though has to be the biggest insult of all. She 'forgot' about doping tests 3 times (give me a break please Pfft). She was an outcast until she won that 400m gold (so soon after coming back too :rollSmile and of course further hypocrisy was proven when her Olympic ban was overturned by the BOA. This is relevant because 'Dicky' Pound backed her

It seems we cycling fans still have some way to go. We must continue to fight the good fight however. B)

I had a crack at getting a comment published on their blog, it has to be accepted first though but here's what I wrote.

i agree with Stephen about Pendleton, huge achievement to say the least to take 3 World titles on the track.

Also Mark Cavendish in road cycling gives British cycling a massive boost there too with a truckload of wins.

Both are overlooked for Rugby runners-up and an athlete who trotted out one of the most feeble excuses I've ever come across as regards missing doping tests ('I forgot'- yeah right).

Who's on the panel that came up with these people? Do they enjoy coming 2nd or dodgy reputations?

Wonder if they'll accept it? Wink

definately sucks, do you remember last year's Sport's Personality of the Year, where Nicole Cooke was nominated and then was completley ignored when they were doing interviews, i think she got 1 completley stupid question and they moved onRolling Eyes

Yeh, Nicole Cooke was asked something like "Are you worried about crashing?" Rolling Eyes

Im hoping for Calzaghe, please not Hamilton. If he can win this when runner-up in a World Championship, when he does start winning championships as he's expected to, SPOTY will become more boring than watching Schumacher and Barrichello control a race in their ferraris a few years back.

Lewis Hamilton - He'll win, but I don't want him to
Boxers Calzaghe and Hatton - They deserve to be on there
Paula Radcliffe - She's done absolutely nothing this season! Why is she on the list?
Justin Rose the golfer - He hasn't exactly done huge amounts
Rugby World Cup runners up Jason Robinson and Jonny Wilkinson - Fair play, these 2 did play well, although I think only Robinson should be included
James Toseland (World Superbikes Champion (his 2nd)) - should be included
Tennis player Andy Murray - WHY? He has won pretty much nothing Angry
Christine Ohuruogu AngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngryAngry Now this one is just ridiculous. We appear to be condoning either doping, or simply gross stupidity.

These nominations get worse each year, going towards the more famous people who have actually done pretty much nothing :x:x:x

i think Calzaghe should win it B)

I would like either Hamilton or Calzaghe to win

At least you have nominees. Denmark doesn't deserve to have any nominees since no one have been doing anything good Pfft

Joe Calzaghe wins!! B)B) And the doping athlete comes last Pfft So glad that Hamilton didnt win.

1. Joe Calzaghe 177,748 (28.19%)
2. Lewis Hamilton 122,649 (19.45%)
3. Ricky Hatton 85,280 (13.53%)
4. James Toseland 84,570 (13.41%)
5. Jason Robinson 67,061 (10.64%)
6. Paula Radcliffe 34,895 (5.53%)
7. Jonny Wilkinson 30,302 (4.81%)
8. Andy Murray 13,242 (2.1%)
9. Justin Rose 10,227 (1.62%)
10. Christine Ohuruogu 4,481 (0.71%)

Enzo Calzaghe won the manager of the year - best chance considering how many world champion boxers he trains compared to the other nominations of Hatton's trainer and the former Scotland football boss.

England rugby won the team award :x:x They won? Zeulch. Other nominees? Scottish football team (Didnt qualify) and British Cycling team - 7 Golds at the world championship not enough it seems Frown

Roger Federer won the overseas award Rolling Eyes He couldnt be bothered coming, it just shows that BBC are too obsessed with Wimbledon.

The cycling coverage? 10 seconds as a nominee for the team of the year, 5 seconds of the Tower bridge to represent the tour de france, and another 5 seconds of track cycling. Rather pathetic.

At least the right person won it.

Coming runners-up in the World Cup having been destroyed in the group stages isn't that bad SN. Although I totally agree with you, it's the BBC. It's always going to be biased towards the big sports

By any sane measure, rugby is only a "big" sport when you come from a country where scones are considered food.

Rugby is a brilliant game - I prefer it much more to football, if only because rugby players actually aren't wimps who dive

Waghlon's point is how big the game is, not how much he prefers it Wink

To be fair, Adam Blythe won the BBC Young Sportsman of the Year in 2005, so cycling isn't always ignoredWink
