After a brilliant first season in which saw Orica Greenedge not only become the newest members of the UCI World Tour, but win the most prestigious classic, Milan-San Remo, and take out extremely good results at Volta a Catalunya, with Michael Albasini winning the first two stages of the tour, and the general classification, and also finishing second at La Fleche Wallone. All then was looking up for the team. Could they go better in season 2013?
Key Riders
Simon Gerrans
Winner of the Santos Tour Down Under, Milan-San Remo and Quebec, whilst also finishing 2nd at San Sebastian and 4th in Montreal, Gerro will once again be our main man on the hilly classics. He may look small in stature, but this Aussie lad packs a mean punch.
Michael Albasini
With a GC win at Volta a Catalunya, and stage win at his home event, the Tour De Suisse, Alba will also be there with Gerrans at the Ardennes classics, but will have a more realistic chance of winning them due to his fractionally better climbing ability. A 2nd position last year at La Fleche Wallone proves this.
Matt Goss
With an extremely frustrating year behind him, we can expect alot better things from Gossy this year. His only win last year came at the Giro, the team's first ever win in a Grand Tour, though, he had a tough fight with Peter Sagan at the Tour De France, which saw him only grab podium places. We can look forward to seeing Gossy once again try to blow away his much fancied competition at the Tour De France.
Sebastian Langeveld
Seb's season was disappointing to say the least last year. The cobble specialist was taken out by a spectator at the Tour of Flanders, after being in a great position to challenge for higher honors. Though, he came back strong at the Eneco Tour, where he finished inside the Top 10. We will see him definitely challenge at the Classics, especially at a much flatter Roubaix.
Cameron Meyer
Cam has made a name for himself on the track seen so far in his short career, after winning the points race title at the World Championships last year. This being his first season on the road, don't expect massive results from him, though, after finishing 10th last year at Tirreno, and faring well on Stage 8 to Andorra at the Vuelta, it still could be quite a special year for him. Once again, the flatter Vuelta will be his target.

Seeing as the Australian Championships are boring as hell, here are the results.
Road Race
Simon Clarke got into the break, and won from the break. Surprised the other teams didnt shut it down straight away, seeing as Clarke was one of the favourites
Time Trial
 Meyer came back from a minute down at the 2nd to last timing intermediate, which was only 10km's from the finish to really challenge Richie Porte. Close, but not close enough.

January Preview
Can Greenedge dominate the Tour Down Under once again? Simon Gerrans is back in Adelaide, and hoping to prevail over the slopes of Old Willunga Hill to take his 2nd GC in a row, and a record 3rd in the competition. The course suits him down to the ground, with a difficult climb up the short, sharp Corkscrew Hill on Stage 2 being within the last 10 km to the finish, and the stage into Stirling gets even tougher this year, with 6 circuits around the infamous valley
Also this month, the team travels to Argentina, to take on the Tour of San Luis, a 7 day stage race which offers oppurtunities for Time Trialists, Sprinters and Climbers to do there thing.
Lastly, the main riders for the Ardennes classics will be off to Marseile to tackle a punchy course in the Grand Prix la Marseillaise. . |

This is my lineup for the Santos Tour Down Under.
If we play our cards right and manage the team well, we could really get both Goss and Gerrans in contention for GC. Gerrans though will get preferential treatment.
In an interview with the Adelaide Advertiser, Gerrans spoke highly of the race organisers, and the newly improved stage layouts.
"If we are going to receive more attention from the global public on this race, it needs to attract some of the biggest riders in the world. By giving them a course which offers everything, with punchy stages on 3 of the 6 stages, the race shall be more frantic, and therefore more exciting. The team definetly has our work cut out to start the season off well". Asked about the Ardennes Classics, Gerrans stated that he would look to feature far greater than he did last year. "Although winning San Remo was brilliant and truly satisfying, for me, the Ardennes races, especially Liege-Bastiogne-Liege is the real pinacle in one day racing. After the teams great performance at La Fleche Wallone last year, we will be looking to feature far more this year".
Any predictions for the race? The main threats are Moser from Cannondale, Guitterez, Hoogerland and Visconti from Movistar, Tiernan-Loecke from Sky and Ponzi from Astana. |

Not Guitterez unless he features in a huge break away that gains a lot of time. Visconti has a good shot against Gerrans, but it depends on the form of both riders I guess...
And don't worry, I'm not that great at Englandish either. |

So the first race of the season, and the first oppurtunity we get to see the new look World Tour, with Rabobank becoming Blanco, and Argos Shimano joining the fold.
With a couple of peaks and troughs in the circuit heading up to the line, it might break up some of the sprinting trains.
Stage 1
Christian Meier attacked early to get some KOM points, but as usually is at the Tour Down Under, a frantic start meant that it took 30km and a lot of fatigue Danilo Hondo in the break, with GC threat Ponzi from Astana, Rasch from Sky and Maaskant from Garmin.
After the KOM point, the BOTD had over 4 min, so the lads came to the front to stablise the gap.
At the first sprint, it was Maaskant, from Ponzi and Raasch 3rd. It was the same at the 2nd.
With the help of Cannondale, with 30km to go, the break was down to only 1 minute and 30 seconds. A bunch sprint would be the likely outcome to a fast day of racing.
With 10km to go, a leadout train apeared. Happily for me, it was Julian Dean on the front.
As we hit the last 3 km, we still had 4 people in the train. But with a downhill finish, we wouldnt need all of them. As Gerrans pulled out from the train, Goss followed in what looked to be the winning move.
Goss moved well clear but suddenly from behind Van Poppel came screaming up his bumper, who would take the win. Spoiler Gossssssssssssssssy! 
Ponzi held both the sprinters and mountains jerseys, with Van Poppel the leader of the white jersey.

With the infamous Corkscrew Hill in the shadows of the finish line, will it be a puncer or a sprinter that takes victory today?
A fairly simple day for the teams today. A break of three ventured up the road early, with potential GC candidate Michael Morkov looking for time on his rivals. He was joined by Schar from BMC, and Vandewalle from Omega-Pharma Quickstep.
Once again it was Dean, Meier and Weening's job to wrestle back the break which they did quite comfortably, and with 5 kms to the climb, and inside 15 km of the finish, the race was back together.
As the peleton slowed into the climb, Gerrans made a surprise attack on the early steep slopes of the Corkscrew Hill. Could he get away with only the descent to come?
As Gerrans crests the hill he has a 53 second lead, and it is all too easy at the finish for him. Goss in the sprint for second sits perfectly on the back wheel of Renshaw and takes off at the right moment to snag 2nd place.
Not a bad start. Feel like l have GC wrapped up already. |
