No idea if this will be popular at all, or if there are many motorsport fans here (apart from Spartacus supporters of course Pfft) but i am a massive one so i thought why not start a thread.

F1 will probably get its own thread but this can be for all other motorsport Smile

As the new year starts the first major event is the Dakar Rally!

This years race starts in Lima, Peru. The rest day is in San Miguel de Tucuman, Argentina. The race ends 15 days and 8000km later in Santiago, Chile.
The Dakar used to be the flagship rally event but has slowly declined since 2000. But still its right up there amongst the top events.

Other major events in January include:
World Rally Championship opening event, the Monte Carlo Rally.
The most prestigious WRC event always attracts thousands of fans and glamor to the south of France. VW appear in their first rally. Ford and Mini stop their factory teams. And finally Loeb wont drive the whole season but is expected at the opening race.

The Rolex Sports Car Series starts in Daytona near the end of the month.

To end the month we have the 48hrs of Sebring, a true endurance test.

I always thought the Dakar Rally went from Paris to Dakar in Senegal, or am I thinking of something completely different?

iirc, that area is too dangerous nowadays, so they moved to Latin America.

Moved over to South America a few years back for a number of reasons key of which as fcanc said was safety
It began as a solely Argentinian event in patagonia but has moved around a bit.
Its still primarily a desert event though Smile

edit: the stage was only 13 km long and time difference's were triple so he lost 30 minutes in the first stage

I don't follow that much...
F1 every race, MotoGP every race until they stopped broadcasting it on free Dutch tv, and short events like Dakar a bit...
I'm lucky, the closest International circuit is like 2km away from my house, so I saw most of the worldwide races live, like MotoGP, Superbike, GP2, that football teams F1 cars thing, that countries thing(forgot how they're called)
Just no F1 and DTM, the circuit isn't wide enough I believe...
The circuit is one of the favourites of Valentino Rossi.
Actually, a couple of guys even got to my school(Capirossi for example) and (only) my class was able to interview them, and I got on TV, on a national sports channel(for 3 seconds Wink )
Pretty cool I guess... Grin
Spoiler
I'm talking about circuit Assen, if you are good with circuit names. i just remember that the Vuelta 2009 started on the circuit Smile

Daytona should be better after 2014, with the ALMS and Grand Am merging, although I'm uncertain we'll see LMP2 there for a very long time, as there'll be a BOP to match them with those ugly Daytona Protoypes.

The 48 hours endurance race is at Navarra, btw. Sebring's 12 hours and usually on the 3rd Saturday of March (and it's one of the best races of the year when there's some competition). Won't be part of the WEC this year though.

I had little interest in endurance racing as it was, but with this merger it's just dead in the water. They can't reconcile the DPs that have straightline speed with the LMPs that have all the downfoce. It'll be a guaranteed mess.

The 48 hours is a two day series of club races and eventes for enthusiasts. He's not talking about the famous 12 hours of Sebump...bring.
