I've been playing this game (and its pre-decesors) for years now, and its really come on a lot since the very early editions. The ability to turn up the graphics res and use the PCM database has made this iteration the best. The PCM Db is the best there is, and really makes the game. Plus the gameplay (AI) seems more aggressive which makes winning something a little bit special.
Anyway there are two changes i've noticed in PCM 12 that i would like help/advice on.
1. i seem to be getting beat by similar or lesser riders in the mountain stages....even with good daily form and good fitness. Attacks out of the lead group are brought back quickly, and even on the dot @84% Protected doesn't seem to trouble any riders....Contador being the most difficult to drop. Is this a change in AI from PCM 11 or am i missing some new tactic for the GC mountian stages. This does make for some pretty tight racing, which is good....but i wanted to get some opinions.
2. Minor point but in a riders season results i cant scroll all the way down to the bottom of his results....its stopping before you get there....a minor issue...but an issue for me. |

1. The mountain gameplay is a bit different compared to PCM11. Gaps appear far less often.
2. That's one of many bad things about the new look of the game. Nothing to do about it, unfortunately.

1. Mountain stages are quite different from PCM 11, like Pelli said. It might be harder in the beginning, but eventually you'll get used to it better. The results are tighter though, but that's a good thing, like you said.
2. That's a bug in this game, let's hope it won't appear in 2013. But normally it's only the final line you can't see. So it's only one result. |

thanks guys for the responses.
ive also noticed that teams in the peleton are far less reluctant to do any early pace setting. Some breaks get up to 12 mins before they'll send people to chase. |

Yeah, that's true. But they will relay if someone important(GC top 3, stage favourite etc.) Otherwise they don't, but most of the time they will relay the break in at 25-5 km too go. I think it's realistic, they let the break go that far in real life too.

thanks.....to be honest the game has been far too easy for years.....so i guess the new ai in the mountains makes it more fun.
get someone in the break takes the pressure off chasing it. |

Definitely, but it's harder getting in the breakaway than it used to be, though! |

ian...i agree...i'm finding that if i dont get someone away in one of the first attempts to escape it becomes too hard to break away from the peleton.
i've even sent my neo-pro's from the peleton to join the break (after 20/30km) and the peleton chase them down. not suire if this 'real' tactics but it does make it super hard to break out the peleton.
ITT's seem like the best ways now to make big time gaps on your rivals in GC races now. |

Well, you can still gain plenty of time in the mountains.
I guess you didn't use the tactic yet; Ride away on 'dot' 80-95
What's dot? Dot is the button (it's a circle I think) on the action bar. I think it's the third button on the bar. If you select it with your GC rider, and put the effort bar on 80+, then you can easily get a gap with other riders, especially when the pace of the peloton isn't that high. Sometimes you need to attack first and go over to 'dot' after a few seconds of attacking(when you got a gap)

Read the first post again, he is very much familiar with the dot tactic |

Oh, I'm sorry...
Well, uhm.. It's already a week ago?
At least I would give you the tip to read the tips and tricks section, which this site has. You can get there by the navigation in the left.
PCM Tools -> Tips and tricks section.
There are plenty of guides for mountain stages up there...

Thanks guys.
J...are you saying you get easy gaps in mountains by a short attack away from the lead group....then going on dot?
if so how close to the end of the climb?
what effort do you use?
what skills/rider are you using?
how fit?
are you playing on easy/normal....?
just trying to understand the variables needed to create the gap. |

Yeah, attack and go over to dot when the game says you got a gap. Works for me most of the time.
Depends on the stage how far from the climb. It's all about timing, can't really explain that. You should almost be out of energy at the finish(yellow + red bar, green should still be filled)
Effort? Depends on the stage. I start with about 83 and end up with about 90
Most of the time I've got a favourite for the stage, but not the favourite. Most of the time about the 5th best climber.
I play on difficulty Normal/hard(I switch between them)
They're most of the time really fit yeah... Oh, and protect the rider you want to attack with all the time until the attack.

noted...i'll try that on my next tour....currently waging war in the cobbled classics...which is my fav part of the game
tour riders are normally about 95% fit through my tour.
my tdf lead rider has climbing ability of 84
i play on normal...which presents enough of a challenge at the moment.
ill report back.
thx |

95% fitness with 84 climbing on Normal should get you decent results if you're quite new to the game
Once you start being invincible that way, you can move up to Hard! |

I play on extreme, and if I had an 84 Mountain rider I would reccomend setting a massive pace on the front of the pack with your second strongest rider (dot 99). When he can't sustain it anymore attack with your leader. The other favourites will be further back and if you are the strongest leader in the mountains you will have the most energy left. This usually gives me a 40' gap and dot 85 usually gets me home in the lead.
If that doesn't work try a 1-2 attack, they work well |

Froomedog....im new to 12 version of the game but not the game as such.
Okay so last climb of the mountain stage....try putting rider on front at dot 99 OR attack with him at the bottom and leader stay with the group and once caught bomb away with my leader? Aka the schleck bros tactics?
You guys using mountain training camps pre tour? Or the tour recce camps? |

Well, some do and some don't...
I don't use it, since it gives an huge advantage vs the AI. Although I do use the exploration camps(recce camps I guess, I find the real word kinda hard ) sometimes(Which might be ridiculous, since they also give an advantage)
I'm sure you can find plenty of people who use the training camps though.

I have a strategy that seems to work almost every time. I change it somewhat based on the stage, but usually on the 2nd to last climb I'll put a good climber at the front on infinite relay and something like 80-85% effort, more if it's a short climb. This will close down gaps to any of the usual attacks and it will also often get rid of the other favorites team mates. If the last climb is longer than 5km and/or very steep I will likely continue with a guy on infinite relay well up the hill, with my captain on 90% effort and maintain position. Roughly around 5km depending on how steep it is I'll put my leader on sole effort 83-88% with a rested climber protecting him and tell the relay climber to maintain position. This will almost always create a gap and it will just continue to rise. I try to time it either so that he still has a little bit of energy as he reaches the sprint, or that he has plenty of energy if someone actually look like they will close the gap, because if the latter happens they are usually drained by the time they reach the sprint, so your captain can just sprint away. Won the Vuelta by 19 minutes with Froome using this strategy

Eple...that was the strategy I have been using.....but was experiencing contador attacking all the way on to the back wheel again.....and then sprinting well to take the stage.....maybe attacked to early on in the climb.....I try and go on the offensive about 7km. The protection rider dies after about 1km....leaving 6km on the dot at 84%.
Seem to have better luck when countering the Ai attacks and then sitting on the wheel of froome and contador....
Training and recce camps.....I use both only for the Tdf.....doesn't do much for the stats of my lead rider....more for the support guys......can't say I see a benefit from the recce camps yet. |
