Vespa - Aprilia Racing - 2013

The Piaggio Group have signed up for a fourth consecutive season as team sponsor and are so pleased with the exposure the Vespa and Aprilia brands have had over the years that they have agreed to increase their investment and become sole sponsors of the team.

De Rosa, Campagnolo and Kask were also pleased with the 2012 season and have agreed to continue working in partnership with the team.

The holding company who hold the team license have registered in Malta for the 2013 season.

Tour of the South China Sea

Finishing positions: Jacopo Guarnieri 12th, Oscar Gatto 27th, Luca Ascani 45th, Andrea Pagoto 50th, Manuel Quinziato 54th, Davide Cimolai 57th, David Loosli 63rd.

Manager comment: I should have taken more note of the profile on this one and studied the road book a bit more carefully. The organizers told us it would be flat, but the difficulty of the climb really hurt our team. Guarnieri's not a bad rider when it comes to the hills, but this one was a real war of attrition and proved way too difficult for him and all of the other sprinters. A very poor start to the season for us.

Not sure about that, to be honest. I'd love him to go - but I think the team's chances of a wild card this time are slim to none.

Based on what? I guess both Cunego and Nibali will be swiped up by PT teams, and then you have the best bet for a top 5 rider in your team Smile

SN tries to avoid giving the same wildcards to the same teams ;-) He got it last year by CdC giving up the spot, then CdC got it back by Domina folding...

fenian_1234
Yes - as Heine says, the Wild Card is likely to go to a team who've not raced it before. Got in by the back door last year when CdC pulled out.

Jersey Presentation 2013

It is with great pleasure that Vespa Aprilia Racing unveil their jersey for the coming season.

i472.photobucket.com/albums/rr82/fenian_123456/vespa_maillot-1.png

The predominantly black kit of the past two seasons has been replaced with a red, white and blue design. Along with moving the registration of the team to Malta, team management see this as part of the continued evolution of the team.

Veteran Italian rider David Garbelli was asked to ride out with journalists this morning to showcase the new gear. It remains to be seen whether De Rosa will provide the team with new models of bikes for the coming season.

Manager Comments

It's no secret we want to re-sign Pozzo and Ginanni and keep them with Vespa another year. We've picked goals with these two riders in mind - Pozzo will aim at Trentino and Hellas, whereas Ginanni will go after Emilia - where he always does well, and for the first time the Japan Cup. We have not forgotten picking goals for Steegmans a couple of years ago and him holding the team to ransom with his salary demands in renewals and it's a mistake we will not repeat. The team also categorically denies any speculation linking us with a move for long time target Vincenzo Nibali as a replacement for either of our leaders. Our main aim in the transfer season is to add more point scoring riders to get us into the Top 5 come the end of the season.

I think your set of goals is the best I've seen, at least for our division. They're ambitious, but I think that they're pretty well balanced given that, unlike most managers, you have almost certainty of having the riders for the job.

Nice goals indeed, i will try to compete with my Metinvest against Pozzo at Hellas, but as i have top 5 goal also, i will be happay with anything between place 2-5 behind him. Smile
And we will meet in Trentino also, now i have to get someone to challenge. Pfft
I think top 5 in the PCT standings can be easy for your already very good team...
I'll be back

fenian_1234
Cheers, Gustavovskiy. It can also be a dangerous one - I felt forced into signing Steegmans a couple of seasons back on a ridiculous renewal fee because I choose cobble goals for him.

Avin, no way is top 5 easy. You've just got to look at where we finished this year. Easier definitely than starting from scratch - but you've also got to bring in the right riders - signing someone like Carrara again and them not performing mean we won't get the top 5.

Well that's 3 teams I've seen so far that have Win Giro Del Trentino (You, Me, and Crommy). That's going to be a fun race. Wink

I was going to set that as top 5 goal too, but when i saw you PCT powerhouses doing that, i rethought that. Pfft
But i will be certainly going for the race anyway with my hopefully at least a bit challenging leader, but that should not fear any of you. Smile

Anyway you are right Fenian with importance of bringing the last pices of puzzle for you, good luck for that!
I'll be back

After spending his first season in the professional peloton with Vespa - Aprilia - De Rosa Racing Team, Mattia Cattaneo, having just re-signed for the coming season with his official team, Wiggle Professional Cycling Team, had nothing but positive things to say about his experience on the Professional Continental team.

"It was a dream come true to sign my first professional contract, and then be able to race at such a consistently good level, with occasionally jumping in to the Pro Tour. My loan deal with Vespa was a brilliant learning experience for me, and if the chance arose to do another season with them, I really think I'd benefit loads under their management's experience.

I think another few seasons of testing my ability are required before I can make a serious attempt at the Giro d'Italia, and where better to do that but supporting other great riders like Pozzovivo."

i141.photobucket.com/albums/r44/CountArach/Man%20Game/Giro19-11.jpg

Cattaneo helped Pozzovivo out during the entire season.
Especially at the Giro.

Whether or not Catteneo will be loaned out is yet to be determined, but the management at Wiggle were happy to discuss any potential move.

"With a rider of his ability, I think he'd slot right into our squad, and he'd definitely get a spot on at least one Grand Tour. But we also think he'd benefit from spending another season in the Professional Continental level. After his race program last year, and the training advice he received whilst at Vespa, we can't think of a potentially better place for him to spend another year away from us.

That's not to say other teams haven't shown an interest though. So far we've had a few calls with other management groups."

Team Presentation 2013

Ginanni targets Tirenno-Adriatico and Giro dell'Emilia, Pozzovivo eyes Trentino and Quetzaltenango

With the opening shots of the 2013 season being fired this week in Australia, Vespa Aprilia Racing invited the media to the team presentation in Tuscany earlier today. Francesco Ginanni and Domenico Pozzovivo will again lead Vespa Aprilia Racing in 2013, targeting success all around the world in a serious bid to make it to the Pro Tour ranks.

Ginanni is about to start his fourth season with the team and looked keen and relaxed at the team presentation in his home city of Pistoia, with no sign of carrying a few extra kilos even at this early stage of the season.

Ginanni won the MTN Cycling Classic, the Tour de Luxembourg and the Tour de Pologne last season, while Pozzovivo, in his first year with the team, triumphed at the Giro del Trentino, Tour de Slovenie, Brixia Tour and also finished on the podium and won a tough stage at the Giro d'Italia.

The Italian cycling fans certainly loved the panache they brought to races and due to their differing skill sets, team manager fenian_1234 has managed to control any internal rivalry despite what rumours coming out of the camp at the Giro d'Italia might have suggested.

Key races for Ginanni this season will be Tirreno - Adriatico, the Giro dell'Emilia and the Japan Cup but he will have a strong support and chase victory wherever he rides.

Pozzovivo will start his season at Tirreno - Adriatico where it's expected he will ride in support of Ginanni. His main target for the season is to take the overall at the Giro del Trentino again. The Tour of Hellas is another key race, and the diminutive Italian hopes to show himself the best climber in the PCT with a win at the sure to be hotly contested Clasica a Quetzaltenango. He will finish his season at the Giro di Lombardia where he hopes to spring a surprise on the Pro Tour boys.

Other key names to watch in the Vespa Aprilia roster include rising sprint star Jacopo Guarnieri, and climber Dario Cataldo who will be hoping to start making a name for himself this year as a stage race winner. On loan, Guarnieri will debut at the Tour of South China Sea and will be keen to get his season off to a flying start.

Dario Cataldo will support Pozzovivo in races that are key to the team's season, but his program has plenty of scope for him to take up leadership duties and he is hoping for a big showing at races like the Tour of Eritrea and the Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt. He is brimming with confidence for the new season and joked with journalists at the presentation that if Pozzovivo is marked out of it at Trentino, he might even take off up the road himself and spring a surprise win.

Veteran Gabriele Bosisio will have very limited opportunities of his own this season and will be used predominantly in a support role. New signings Matthias Krizek, Matteo Montaguti, Enrique Salgueiro and David Loosli are all good solid riders and will be expected to contribute points to the promotion push with decent finishes when they race. Fast finishing Oscar Gatto is the only rider on the roster to have picked up a win in each of the last 3 seasons for Vespa and he'll be keen to continue that run, though he and new boy, Mauro Richeze, will spend a lot of the season as key lead outs for Guarnieri. Gatto starts his season with Guarnieri at the Tour of South China Sea and manager fenian_1234 will be watching closely to see if he is able to adapt to this new role.

The team will again ride De Rosa bikes this season, and with a new predominantly blue jersey they will be hopeful of increasing their visibility and maximizing sponsor exposure for the new season.

Through the Vespa and latterly, Aprilia brands, the Piagio group are long time sponsors of the team, but the four year sponsorship deal with them comes to an end as the season closes. It is understood that unless fenian_1234 delivers promotion to the PT, he will be looking to convince a new sponsor to back the team in the future.
