I'm back - shorter but more regular updates, and a better storyline, I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoy writing it
6:00 am is not a time I usually ever see, but today was different, today was the biggest day of my life, one which would be the start of the greatest and most exciting challenge I’d ever face. Of course, I just turned over and went back to sleep, so when I woke up 2 hours later, I was almost too late. I just had time to eat a quick breakfast, then it was straight down to the station and on my way to France, with my 2 pert chickens, Brian Blessed and Flash Gordon. Falling asleep under the Channel Tunnel, all I could think about was the upcoming day. My journey had begun.

Entirely new characters (well, apart from 1 old favourite of mine :lol. Which team - you'd never guess - no really, if you guess right, you must be psychic or something - sorry about the French here, its been a while
I woke up in Paris, to a gentle tap on the shoulder. “Excusez-moi monsieur, est-ce que vous s’appellont Will?” My French slowly came back to me, as I fluently replied, “Oui.” He indicated I should follow him, the logo on his tie proof he was my contact. He then proceeded to talk to me in French for the next 4 hours, as he took me in his car out of Paris and into the peaks in the Alps, and for all I know, he could have been telling me about the shipping forecast. From time to time, he paused, as though I should respond, all I could give was a non committal shrug. We arrived at our destination, but before getting out, he turned to me and said, “I thought you told us you could speak French.” He got out, leaving me flabbergasted – 4 hours of Franco babbling, and he could speak perfect English. Not the start I was expecting.

So why was I travelling all the way to France, with everything I owned, no money, and only GCSE grade C standard French? Well, a new cycling team had held a competition for its employees, and me, a minimum wage grunt worker, had got down to the final 3, after taking some gruelling cycling quizzes. I’d then gone to a final in London, where the board of directors interviewed each one of us, and we got the life tested out of us, on all aspects of cycling and managing a team – it had been a week of hard work and fortitude, but by the end of the week, the board voted, and by just one vote, my dream had come true – I was to become a director sportif, for a fairly strong, new cycling team

Royal Dutch Shell have the greatest pleasure in announcing a new wave of giving you energy – construction is underway in the UK and America on the largest green energy power plants in the world, in a $20 billion investment, committing ourselves to protecting the environment. The WWS (Wind, water and Solar) scheme is the largest step so far in combating climate change, and has received backing from world leaders across the globe.
In honour of this landmark step, we launch our very own carbon neutral and 100% green cycling team, who we hope to become a symbol of our new ways. The team will begin in the Continental ranks, but we hope with hard work and patience, our brand new manager, Will Reader will lead us to the ProTour ranks and glory at the most famous event of all – Le Tour de France.
We hope to see you cheering on our heroes, we’ll keep you updated here, at Shell Cycling Online

In our training base in the Alps, I met the board of directors again, and it was straight down to business. I’d read up on my new employers, and realised I stood before the CEO of Royal Dutch Shell, Jeroen van der Veer. He was quite friendly, but he made it clear to me that he expected results – he’d taken big risks for the company in making it greener, and he was adamant that success in cycling could tip the scales when the board assessed how this new direction took the company. They set me the following targets, and a couple of rules as well:
- Join the ProTour within 2 seasons
- Top 10 in the Tour of Britain and 1 race in America
- Win the Tour de France within 4 seasons
- At least 75% of the team must be from an English speaking country
- 2006 Budget of €1,000,000
Some tough goals, but I’m really excited about this – lots of people would kill for this chance, it’s a, well 1 in a couple of million chance, and I’m going to enjoy every second – I hope.
STOP PRESS, OR DIARY, OR WHATEVER THIS THING IS
I’ve just been given my team roster for 2006 – it’s a young team, but its got hot prospects, and will be incredible to manage – watch out for the team in the Shell Online Presentation
