I don't see a thread here to discuss cyclo-cross. So I thought it might be interesting to make one, since the new season just started! Seems to me that the big three of this season will be Nys, Albert and Pauwels, as expected. |

Has someone got a website that outlines the basics of cyclo cross? It completely baffles me.

What confuses you? They just ride the bikes in terrain
There is the given time (e.g. one hour) for the race and depending on how they ride couple of first laps, the total number of laps is calculated, to match +- the one hour mark.
First at the line is winner.
The riders can change bikes how many times they want in the service area.
There is World Cup and Superprestige races as the two highest tiers.
That is pretty much all.
Edit:I will miss Stybar a lot this season

And don't forget about GVA races. And than there's some international crosses that aren't part of any classification. |

Never knew that at all. This is what happens when races aren't televised.
@ Willier, somehow it never occurred to me to check wikipedia. Usually the cycling stuff on there is crap, so I don't even think to...

And usually you can find streams for the races on this site.

(scroll a bit down for the cycling section.) |

Unlike road cycling I don't know enough here to provide my own commentary and so I get lost without English commentary, and that isn't helpful seeing as it is mostly Dutch from what I can tell.

I'm excited for this season. I expect this to be the last season where Nys will be able to compete with Pauwels and Albert. I'm curious about van der Haar. He already did great in the Vlaamse Industrieprijs Bosduin. |

Interesting rider indeed, i will be looking forward to see him. Czech cyclocross will be mainly on shoulders of young Simunek (he is not so young now, but i say it with respect to his father) this year, he will be probably again competing for top 5-10s, like in the first races this year.
@Count: You cant really be much confused after seeing few races and getting used to how the riders from the top look like, they are then usually at the front of the every race and directors does not show usually anything else further than top 10 during the race. But flemish and dutch are killer languages, i was rather watching it with sound off sometimes

And we must not forget: the Belgians are killing the sport with their domination, when both Stybar and Boom don't participate. Hopefully young Dutch Van der Haar and some Frenchies can get some p0dium places...

Even without them the sport is still fun to watch. But I agree it would be even better with them. Now it will be Nys vs Albert vs Pauwels every race. It would be more when with Nys vs Albert vs Pauwels vs Stybar vs Boom. |

It doesn't make it boring, though. I really like cyclo cross, one hour of fun! Guaranteed.
Although the WC of last year was a joke (the entire Belgian team finished in front of the rest )
I'm curious about the WC in America, maybe Nys can shake off his bad-WC past! (Nys always tends to do bad at WC, although he wins nearly everything else )
@CountArach: It's not that difficult, you'll get the hang of it after a couple of races, I'm sure of it

So what can we expect this weekend? Last week Pauwels wasn't in his best shape yet, I personally think he needs a few weeks. He's mostly a slow starter but he stays on a high level all season.
I hope to see another dual between Nys and Albert, or at least I expect this. Wonder if Nys will stay sharp all through the winter, though. He's had a hard summer as well. |

I don't know about the weather in Belgium, but here in the Netherlands it's raining a lot last days. Could be a very muddy cross.
I expect Nys and Albert once again to be the strongest. |

Still it can be pretty muddy from the previous showers. I am looking forward to the race. But what i cant wait for is World cup race in Tabor where i will be present like every year now, 2 weeks from this Sunday.

Ah just got the Cyclo-cross guide for this season with the newspaper!
Tomorrow is Ruddervoorde (superprestige), Last year's result:
1. Albest
2. Aernouts
3 K. Vantornout
4. Nys
5. Wellens
Weather expectations are good, so my guess is Nys. Some long sections where power will be a plus (maybe a small sprint again) |

I think we will see Nys Vs. Albert in all the cross season, they are the strongest.
Watch out for Lars van der haar a young rider with a lot of potential, he finished in 4th position last race. |

Agreed. He is the n° 1 rider to look for qua non-Belgians. Let's hope he can throw in a few surprised! |
