Playboy Project II - Satisfying Honour
Barbaruvian
Spoiler
Database is essentially OfficialDB just with team names/kits changed to my own shirts
Also, I will add all the riders from my team, but play with random potential for a bit of fun Grin
Lastly, stat evolution is turned up to save a bit of time (only 2 weeks till uni)

Stage 21 of the Vuelta a España, Juan Jose Cobo Acebo, riding for the Spanish team Lupa Supermercados has held off the Etihad duo of Froome and Wiggins to claim the overall. Somewhere in the scrum of riders and reporters a journalist comes across a man sitting on a kerb wearing clothing that marks him out as a directeur sportif for the German team Daimler - Batavus.
"Vernie" he asks, "Can you give us any news on your plans for next season?"
"I still haven't agreed terms with a team, and I am still owed two month's wages"
"Can you give us any clues as to who you are in talks with?"
"I am in talks with no teams at the moment"

The next day, an article appears in a well known cycling web-paper.
"Out of favour Kunze destitute"
Vernie refuses to comment.

A few weeks later at the world championships, the same reporter sees Vernie Kunze talking to a rider who placed 4th in the U23 men's time trial, dutchman Lambert Pot, and German Manfred Sÿs, a sprinter who punctured in the U23 road race
"How're things going Vernie?"
The man's eyes look a little less hollow.
"Better, I may yet have a team next year."
"Tell me more!"
"Not at the moment, nothing has yet been finalised, but I won't be able to deal with the size of organisation to which I am accustomed"

The reporter bumps into Mr Kunze a further few times during the world championships, each time busying himself with out of contract young riders...

"Vernie Kunze to launch new cycling team?"
Vernie Kunze, ex-directeur sportif at Daimler-Batavus, could be about to re-enter from his lonely orbit about the world of cycling, with a young continental team.
"I have a potential sponsor, and am in talks with several riders. For sure, it's all happening very quickly, but nothing is yet certian"

28th November

UCI president Pat McQuaid states he is considering license applications from "a number of new Continental teams" including an unknown name on a sheet of paper, Playboy Project II. The reporter picks up on the application from San Marino and enquires with Vernie's wife, Jaantje, who runs an advertising agency.
"Can you tell me anything about your husbands plans for next year?"
She smiles, "I won't say much, but I can show you this"

"Vernie's planning to get his own back on a few rather too serious teams."

Vernie Kunze Announces Team for 2012

-Playboy Project II to launch off ground with squad of young riders /names unconfirmed/

The San Marino based team will be the brainchild of 48yr old Vernie Kunze, the cycling prodigy whose career was cut short at just 24yrs old with intermittent Supraventricular Tachycardia, making it difficult for him to race.

Vernie revealed that his condition could have been treated with a beta-blocker and steroid combination illegal under WADA, and that he chose to retire from the sport rather than cheat. At the same time, Mr Kunze condemned some of his contemporaries for the choices they made and was subsequently ostracized from the top level of the sport.

Bereft of his own development, Vernie will seek to provide a squad of new hopefuls the chance to succeed, without exposing them to the difficult decision of performance enhancing drugs.

Vernie revealed that he would take personal pleasure from the opportunity to take on and beat his former colleagues and employers

Spoiler
All the young riders I'm using are ones that have been generated in my games of PCM (over the last 6 years) Only 3 of these riders ever fulfilled their potential with me (out of boredom etc), so the title, Satisfying Honour, is for them as well as Vernie

Vernie Kunze Calls on WorldTour Expertise

A well known cycling website has reported that Vernie Kunze may be in talks with Belgian coach and manager Tommeke Thommikksen, formerly of CAT Racing.

At the Giro di Lombardia, Thommikksen was approached for comment, but declined, stating he had spent a long day in the team car and "need[ed] the loo"

Who will Kunze recruit ?

With the Playboy Project team taking shape, there has been no end to the speculation surrounding its riders. Whilst young riders Lambert Pot and Manfred Sÿs have already been linked with the team along with other stars for the future including Paris-Roubaix Espoirs runner-up Øle Høle and Tour de l'Avenir stage winner Gu Ju, Le Monde believes that disgraced pairing Rassmussen and Rebellin have also been in contact with Kunze, but it remains to be seen if Playboy's coach is willing to stick to his anti-doping and young rider stance as he has promised to do.

12th December 2011, Presentation of Playboy Project II

A group of reporters, officials, sponsors and families are gathered in a theatre in Utrecht. In front of them, a dark stage is visibly set with a mannequin covered with a drape. After everyone has mingled to aperitifs and found their seats, the lights go out. The room is silent.

When the lights come back on, Vernie Kunze is standing in the middle of the stage, wearing a shirt that says “playboy” above the breast pocket, supported by dark jeans. His thinning, sandy hair sports the barest film of sweat.

“Hello everyone, I’m Vernie, and this is Playboy II”

Lights come on. Behind Vernie are silhouetted two-score of people, all wearing similar attire.

“When I left Daimler-Batavus, I did so because I felt the ethos of the sport needed to change. For a long time I have had issues with the methods of obtaining marginal gains and “ he coughs “substantial gains within professional cycling, and I feel that the mentality of many of the WorldTour teams has been damaging to a lot of Neo-Pro cyclists.

“What we want to achieve here, is an environment where we can motivate and support our athletes to achieve as much as any other organisation in the world, without pressurising them into unfeasible commitments or forcing them to make difficult choices. In short, we want to respect the gentlemanly nature of cycling. I give you then, Playboy Project II”

Vernie steps back, to his right. Giving over the microphone to another member of the management.

Tommeke Thommikksen steps forward

"It was certainly a surprise when Vernie first contacted me, but once I had listened to his vision of bringing up a new generation of young riders on a recipe of clean cycling, I was immediately convinced to join this project."

"Recently, there has been a dearth of multi-cultural teams, and I believe that this project can not only fill in the long lost sight of a team time trial with each rider wearing a different national champions’ jersey, but Playboy can be a platform from which a new group of riders can project a whole new image of cycling – we can be the catalyst for a time in the future where victors are applauded, and not bombarded with (all too true) accusations."

The microphone is handed back to Vernie who presents the team.

Vernie Kunze
img835.imageshack.us/img835/8397/vk2a.jpg

Nationality: Netherlands
Age: 49
Position: Head Sports Director

Bio:
Vernie was born and raised in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Like all (real) Dutch children he developed his love of biking in his youth, getting about on his bike to school and to see friends. Vernie has always tried hard to maintain the love in cycling, bringing him into dispute with some directeur sportifs in the past. At the age of 19, Vernie signed a contract with the Dutch team SNS Bank where he rode until he was forced to retire at 24. Since then he has worked on the staff of several teams for the last 25 years, including Koninlijke Phillips and Daimler - Batavus, culminating in his leadership of Playboy Project II

Hajek Semak
img19.imageshack.us/img19/6563/russiastaff.jpg

Nationality: Russian Federation
Age: 37
Position: Coach and Race Coordinator

Bio: Hajek is an ex-cyclist specialising in Cyclo-cross but also road riding, he has shown real belief in the Playboy Project, helping from the beginning in the search for riders with the raw talent require to make it as professional cyclists.

MTSN98
Tommeke Thommikksen
img717.imageshack.us/img717/4481/tt1l.jpg

Nationality: Belgium
Age 35
Position: Team & Media Coordinator, Sports Director

Bio:
One of the few staff members of any cycling team who never raced pro, this fact perhaps reflects his strong stance against doping. Nevertheless, he achieved immediate Grand Tour success in his first job at Accumalux, before moving onto Team EA Games where he claimed a spectacular Tour de France / Paris-Roubaix double. Sponsorship was however withdrawn, and the team made a brief yet highly disappointing appearance under the guise of Eisbar the following year - the team folded completely soon after. Tommeke then took a break from professional cycling, recently returning to the peloton with CAT for an unhappy one year stint, before teaming up with Kunze at the end of the season.

Ernesto Baretto
img513.imageshack.us/img513/4905/portugalstaff.jpg

Nationality: Portugal
Age: 45
Position: Coach, Sports Director

Bio:
A workhorse of various continental teams in his riding days, Baretto never considered leaving the sport he loved, and upon retiring, took up a role inside the team car. He has not only used all of his experience to become a more than competent DS, but his knowledge of the sport has made him a perfect coach and mentor to younger riders.
