Don't attack - either get your helpers up front, or your rider to ride tempo after him, then attack when you get nearer, and bridge up to him

if your rider can't catch him, either your rider is far worse or you're attacking instead of counter-attacking. counter-attacking wastes less energy than attacking. use it.

Also, if Di Luca has been superior in all stages, try stretching the peloton. That would force Di Luca to attack from a longer distance, thereby using more energy to get to the front and having less energy for the "real attack", thus making it easier for you to follow him. |

if it's Zubeldia vs. Di Luca or Valverde, it's that quite simply he's not in the same league

that would backfire. it would require more endurance from a rider. which is Di Luca's strong point.

Still, if the difficulty is "hard" he won't be able to catch up - as the AI is able to attack for hours and your riders are nowhere near that. I think it's very difficult to know what to do in MO and HI races. If you attack first, you're dead. If you counter you need to be in superb form, and if you don't you need a really superior squad of MO riders.
My worst problem, however, is to stick with the best riders when we reach a flat or hilly stretch. As my riders tend to be MO-only riders (see: Colombians) who suck in flat or hilly terrain, I am almost always dumped by the others on these stupid flat pieces of tarmac. |

AI has +1 for all attributes in Hard mode. it's not visible when you look at their stats, but that's how the AI looks at it.
in Extreme it's +1 to them and -1 to your riders (which equals +2 to them)

Are you sure it's not just +2 in Extreme? |

both ways work out the same, so it doesn't really matter who is right

It matters
because if the AI has plus 2 and you are with zero is more relaxing to know that you are not stoled by the AI having minus 1

I have won a fair few protour stages by delaying my counter attack until the very last 3* favourite passes you on the final mountain and then counter them. You'd be surprised how much energy you can have left when you catch up for a relay with the stage faves up the mountain, giving you the upperhand as you recover before launching another devasting attack 2-3 km from the finish...sometimes - it doesn't work very well in the Giro (Di luca and Cunego are superhuman) or the Tour unless you are one of the top riders. I also play on normal so dont know if these cheap tactics work on another level. |

After i won the TDF in Medium, i played in hard, the first TDF in hard was really HARD, it was just to learn, i think i did 4º. Then i won 2 (Rasmussen, Dekker 2º and Contador, Leipheimer 4º). I know it was with strong teams but i rarely attack, i put 3ª best rider pulling in 2º mountain to final, and 2º best in the last, then if someone can attack i go after with GC in effort or counter attack only if i'm in +3 or plus. I just attack if at 3 km to final i'm with big blue bar. Sometimes i counter attack, but only maintain it if i get blinking green
My learning mode was to play the same stage using different tactics until i get the best result. Learned that attacking a lot isn't the best way, also form is very important. In the first ones mountain stages i rarely win, the AI controls but in the last week i rule, with Contador i won 4 minutes in TDF last Mountain stage and got the yellow. |

so how do you guys handle it if you lose all your blue bar just getting to the top of the hill?
If there was 30k to go and you had 2 feeds and half green, would you be better off to eat both and have some blue bar to attack or to cross the line with a feed still in your pocket and finish off without attacking? |
