Hi my name is Philippe Gilbert, and am making this blog on my quest to take the Ardennes Triple in one year. I took the triple last year. The 3 races that make this triple are: Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, Liège–Bastogne–Liège.
I making this short one rider story after I have seen many others. Once a achieve the goal, this story will stop. I am playing on hard, and having an evolution of attributes of .7. I will not show Gilbert's stats, just as I don't show stats(or attributes, however you want to call them) in my Liquigas-Cannondale story.
Ardennes Classics History
The Ardennes classics are 3 hilly races: Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, Liège–Bastogne–Liège. Only 2 people in cycling history have taken the ardennes triple, Davide Rebellin in 2004 and Philippe Gilbert in 2011 are the only 2 riders to have gotten it in one season. Danilo Di Luca, Michele Bartoli, Eddy Merckx and Bernard Hinault have taken Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne, and Liège–Bastogne–Liège at least once, but in there whole career, not one year.
Philippe Gilbert History
Philippe Gilbert is a puncheur. He can sprint while being good in the hills. Mountains are far from his strong suit. but is isn't too bad. Time trails aren't great for him either. Gilbert started his career of with FDJ. He has raced for 3 teams in his career, so far he was most succesful with Silence-Lotto.
Hopefully I can repeat the magic I made last year, but this time with team BMC

The Amstel Gold race was existed since 1966. This race has a very funny history toward the beginning of its history. This years race is from Maasberg to Valkenburg. The races is 259.3 killometers long with many, many hills.
?I am so exited for today's race. I have a very, very strong team around me, and although we have Cadel, I am the team leader.

The Amstil Gold Race
Early in the race, attacks were coming left and right. Eventually a group of 6 formed a group at the front, including Marcus Burghardt.
However Burghardt fell in a very wet turn.
but he got back to the front group. At one point the peleton was 9:28 behind the leaders. With 80 killometers left, Rabobank, Radioshack moviestar cut the lead to 5:13.
After the group was reeled in with 28 killometers left, Gilbert went on the attack.
7 riders followed Gilbert, and they were alone with 14 killometers left. Simon Gerrans, Ballan and Evans were chasing.
But with less that 5 killometers Gilbert made his move.
And he got it, Gilbert has won the Amstil Gold Race

Interview
Reporter-" Philippe, you rode an amazing race, how do you feel?"
Gilbert-"I feel amazing, my team rode a great race for me, I had the legs and that's it"
Reporter-"You goal this year is to win the all of the Ardennes classics as you did last year, do you feel like you are able to do that?"
Gilbert-" Of course, I did it last year, and this year I feel even stronger"
Reporter-"Cadel was a big favorite, but we was on the wrong side of a split, were you expecting him to struggle like he did?"
Gilbert-" I think he actually had the legs today, it was really just the split that got him into trouble"
I am so happy to win this one, this was a hard one as Hushod struggled and Cadel and Ballan were caught in a split. I am going to get a bottle now so see you next time!

La Flèche Wallonne has existed since 1936. This year it runs from Charleroi to Huy. It is 200.3 killometers long. There are many tough hills to climb. It runs on back to back days with Liège–Bastogne–Liège. Winning both of these races is called the Ardennes double, but Gilbert want's that Ardennes triple, lets see if he gets it.

La Flèche Wallonne
The race started very calmly, but after about 10 killometers a big group of ten formed to be the BOTD. One of the nine was Greg Van Avermaet. and with 100 killometers done, 6 more riders bridged the gap. The now had a 5:00 lead.
However the break was doomed since the start. With 20 kms left they lead with 1:20. Ballan decided too attack with 17 killometers.
Ballan was caught with 8 killometers left. Gilbert went on the attack with 2.1 Killometers left.
And Gilbert wins La Flèche Wallonne!!!!!!!! He only needs to win Liege-Baston-Liege to get the Ardennes Triple. He was nearly caught by Joacquim Rodriquez
Race Wrap-up
Results did not export but whatever we won!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Interview
Reporter-" Phillippe how does it feel to have won the first 2 legs of the Ardennes Triple, can you win Liege-Baston-Liege"?
Gilbert-"Of course you saw me today and at the Amstil Gold Race, but right now I owe my team, they worked so hard for me today.
Reporter-"I would have more questions, but you have answered them with your win today, great job"
Gilbert-" Thank you so much"
I can't belive it, if I win Liege-Baston-LiegeI will achive my goal, this is so crazy, I thought that I would do it next year or something, but this year is fine.

Liège–Bastogne–Liège has existed since 1892 and because of that it's nickname is La Doyenne ("the oldest". This year's edition is 257.7 killometers long. There are many, many, steep climbs.
Favorites:
Cadel Evans
Philippe Gilbert
Joaquim Rodriquez
Andy Schleck
Alberto Contador
BMC squad:
Philippe Gilbert
George Hincapie
Thor Hushovd
Cadel Evans
Marco Pinotti
Alessandro Ballan
Greg Van Avermaet
Tejay van Garderen
Liège–Bastogne–Liège
early in the stage 5 riders escaped from the peleton and 5 minutes later 2 others reached them.
with 80 killometers left . We pushed the pace and dropped Rodriquez.
but he put in a huge effort and 30 Kms later pulled himself into the peleton. as the break got caught.
untill five killometers left there was no action. but That's when Gilbert made his move.
And he got it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phillippe Gilbert wins the Ardennes Triple!!!!!!!!!!
2 seasons in a row!!!!!!
Race Wrap-up
Interview:
Reporter-"Phillippe, you wave just won the Ardennes Triple, becoming the first rider to win it in 2 straight seasons, let alone win it twice. How do you feel.
Gilbert-"I-I really can't explain to you how this feels, just to now be mentioned with great riders like Merckx, Hinault and others. This race was all because of my team, if i didn't have this team I wouldn't be able to have done it.
Reporter-"were you stronger last year or this year?
Gilbert-"Last year, this year without my team I would have been able to do it, but don't get me wrong, last year's team was great.
Reporter-"congrats' Phillippe, now go celebrate"
Gillbert-"Oh I will"
I have nothing to say but I did it!!!!!!!!
So this marks the end of this very, very short one rider story, I have mixed emotions of this. I am very happy, but very sad at the same time. This has been an amazing story and I want to thank everyone who supported me.
Thank you so much.

no, no I just reserved the first 3 for the first 3 classics, just so it would look better, with only results, I hope I can win in the first couple years as this was the first time I rode in the Amstil Gold race. I have never done La Flèche Wallonne but I did do Liège–Bastogne–Liège, but it was a disaster. |

Nice victory, aggressive riding is always a risk, it's nice that you took the risk and won!
Good luck in the other two races |

why is it that you dont want to show the stats of the riders? Cos its not much of a challenge if Gilbert has 85 in hills and the other favourites have 81-82. |
