Route
Stage 1 is apparently flat, Stage 2 is a TTT, Stages 3 and 4 and 5 are also apparently flat, before a 17.4km TT after the 18.9km TTT leads us nicely onto the final stage which finishes atop the Muur van Geraardsbergen. For those that aren't aware, that's just over a kilometre at an average of 9.3% and a maximum of 19.8%. Oh, and it's cobbled. I can't find any stage profiles though.
Startlist
https://www.cyclingnews.com/races/enec...start-list
Big favourites must be the likes of Boonen, Chavanel, Boom, Ballan and Haussler, if the stages are as flat as claimed. Chavanel and Boom are better TT'ers of those mentioned, but the others are decent on Cobbles and could do something on the flat. Rojas, Kittel, Vanmarcke, Roelandts, Gallopin, Hermans, Vanendert and Blythe are also here and could surprise.
Thomas De Gendt is here, but he pretty much is the limit in terms of GC riders coming here - bar some Spanish guy who's won three Tours, two Giro's and a Vuelta. Yes, Bertie's back and will surely be like Marmite. Can he do something here? The TT should suit him but he might be a bit race rusty - although Valverde was strong after being away for longer.
Conclusion
This has it's own thread for the Contador fanboys, and because it's a WT race even if it's basically a load of sprints with a TT and a TTT and then an uphill finish on the Kapelmuur. It's still better than the Tour of Beijing though. |

Good to see a cycling legend coming back in this race. I'm talking about the Muur obviously. The last stage doesn't finish atop the Muur btw, but in the previous false flat in Geraardsbergen.

I can remember 2005 when, I think, the race was promoted to the new Pro Tour. The organisation motorbikes managed to get the peloton on the wrong roads somewhere in Belgium, during one of the last stages.
I've always considered this race as a farce since then. |

It was the breakaway....and they were going to win the stage
Also, it came after the organizers had said "We don't have the terrain to be the world's top race, so we want to be the top race in terms of organization"
Epic.
Anyway, Berto's back. Back again.

Too bad I have to work this week, the stage on Wednesday finishes in my home town. I wanted to see Tom Boonen and Contador

Great to see that Contador will be back in the saddle.
I hope De Gendts wins the time trials, though!
Too bad they haven't included a hilly stage or something like it. |

Staf Scheirlinckx and Pablo Urtasun are in a break 10 minutes ahead of the peloton.

The gap has been absolutely demolished and they are almost caught with 76km left. Crosswinds should be coming up...
