Around two years ago, I managed to win the bronze medal in the Under 23 world time trial championships. I could not have guessed that I would now be on a team with Jan Ullrich, another young German cyclist like myself, on the biggest stage of all. Yesterday I signed with Team Telekom, a German team in the UCI World Cup.
I am a time trialist primarily but I can climb too and one day I hope to win the Tour de France. I'm leaving on a plane to my first training session soon, we're going to the Ardennes to prepare for the early classics.
I'll be keeping you updated along the way as I strive to be the best GC rider in the world. First, though, I have to be the best German GC rider...

Ardennes training camp
1st of January,1998
Hey everyone,
Now I know how it feels to race with the elite. We were put on a course similar to Liege-Bastogne-Liege and all the time I was suffering. The descents offered little respite as many of the better descenders were putting us under pressure. We will be working on team work tomorrow but today we were told to: 'push yourselves to your limits and drop as many people as you can'. There are quite a few strong descenders in the team so even then we had to push to keep in touch with them. I do have some positives from this though, on the climbs I was fairly strong and managed to drop[ a few people when I relayed at the front of our group. However, the strongest of us was Jan Ullrich, he attacked again and again on the steep slopes before he rode away and finished the course first. Hopefully I'll have the legs to stay with everyone tomorrow and help with the relays.
2nd of January, 1998.
We were divided into groups of riders based on yesterday's performance. I was in group two out of five. Jan (Ullrich) was in group one. We were focusing on a hilly team time trial. We were to help each other and try to take our group as quickly as we could to the finish line. Group five consisted mainly of rouleurs and sprinters, four was of our strongest time trialists, group three was of weaker all-rounders, group two was of (stronger) domestiques and group one was leaders and super-domestiques. We did well but we could only come in third, with the time trialists in second and the leaders in first. We're going to have the team presentation soon so be ready for it...
(I did not really go on a training camp.)

Team Presentation
Jan Ullrich
His goals are Tirreno-Adriatico, the Tour de France and La Vuelta. Last year's winner of the Tour de France he will be expected to defend his title and try and finish on the podium of La Vuelta. He also has a mild interest in Tirreno-Adriatico due to it being on of the sponsor's goals.
Udo Bolts
An experienced super-domestique. He will prove to be the final man able to support Jan Ullrich on the climbs. A capable climber who can time trial and ride on the hills as well, he will prove to be an invaluable piece of the team. He will also have some freedom for himself in the early part of the season for Paris-Nice and the February tours.
Erik Zabel
Undisputed sprint leader of the team. He will be going for a green jersey in the Tour de France, Milan-San Remo and the World Championships. One of the best sprinters on the planet, he can beat anyone when he fells good. Strong on the cobbles as well, an outside bet for Paris-Roubaix if the team can control the breakaways.
Giovanni Lombardi
Lead-out man for Zabel and one of the reasons that we will be a forced to be reckoned with in the sprints as he can also ride for himself. He will go for stage wins in small tours and try to get money wherever he can. However, he will usually ride for Zabel. He is the second best sprinter on the team.
Classic leaders
Rolf Aldag
The early season cobbled classics are his goals. He'll attempt to as many of them as he can. Not seen as the very strongest on the team on the cobbles, he is leader for his ability on the flat though he will rely on the team around him if he is to win anything.
 Free elements and stronger domestiques 
Steffen Weseman
A growing cobbles talent with room to improve. Not the leader on the cobbles due to his lower power output, he will be essential for the cobbles and important for the early part of a lead out train. A great rider with talent to improve.
Bjarne Riis
A former Tour de France winner. This time though, he will be working for Jan rather than the other way round. He will have little freedom throughout the season except in the Giro,. He will never be leader, he will have to settle for a strong domestique role or a free element role.
Andreas Kloden
And then you have me. I'm a hard-working domestique and I will be aiming for the young riders jersey of a tour in February and the mountains classification in the Tour de France as well as a top ten in the La Vuelta.
What about the Giro?
We will not be aiming for much in this race. We are focusing on the Tour de France and La Vuelta more. Bjarne Riis will be going for the mountains jersey in this race but that's about it.

This story won't be starting for maybe three to four days, maybe five due to the immensely slow downloading of uTorrent for the database. It's weird as it was cruising at around 200-300 KB's a second but has dropped to around nine. Does anyone know how to speed things up?
It's sped up and I've just opened the database 7zip. I'll start the story once I do the team goals and presentation.

Scott Moninger, dominant winner of the Vuelta al Tachira
The Vuelta was close at the top but eventually Scott Moninger() had too much for second placed Branko Filip. Scott also took the green jersey . The Kross-Selle Italia team completely dominated the team classification, nearly taking it by ten minutes. There was some good news for Branko Filip though, he took the young riders classification. Juan Carlos Vicario took the mountain's classification by three points over the German Raphael Schweda. |

Hey everyone,
Just a quick update. We are beginning our season at the Tour of the Mediterranean. I am not taking part but we're sending some of our strongest riders there. Our leader for it is Udo Bolts who will be aiming for the GC. We don't have a sprinter so I'm guessing we'll be trying to put someone in the breakaway, I'm not sure though. I'm in Italy right now to prepare for a short tour.

CO: Hello and welcome to stage one of the Tour of the Mediterranean. It is a flat stage today so we should expect a bunch finish unless a large enough breakaway group can be made.
CO: A ten man breakaway group has been formed. There are a few riders up the road from the group but they are easily rejoining this group. Team Deutsche Telekom have a man in the breakaway as well as numerous riders from different teams.
CO: The peloton is closing down the now thirteen man break quite quickly. The gap is sitting at 2 and a half minutes now and shrinking.
CO: It's over. The peloton has caught up with the breakaway and now they're powering home as quickly as possible. It'll be a frantic mass sprint now, remember, with no time bonuses the winner of this stage will be in yellow tomorrow.
CO: Lopes is leading but has faltered and both Mondini and Murn are gaining fast. It'll be a close run thing.
CO: Lopes has stopped sprinting! Mondini will take the stage with Murn right behind him. He was the quickest by far today and had the stamina to stay ahead of his closest challengers. A great sprint by him!
What a great sprint by Blaudzun. He is not known for his sprinting but he has managed to take eighth place in the sprint.

Speedy stage
The breakaway riding well
A peloton headed by Team Telekom is leading the chase into the hills.
After catching the break the peloton breaks up on the descent to the finish.
Gasperoni takes the stage by a small margin to the peloton.
Udo Bolts has not done well, finishing nearly off the back of the peloton.
Mondini holds on to the yellow jersey by the skin of his teeth. |

Speedy stage
The breakaway rides away from the peloton
De Clerqc on the offensive decimating all the other riders as he powers home. Will he make it?
De Clercq is going to win the stage by a huge margin. He was too strong for everyone. He will inherit the yellow jersey with one stage left and a three minute cushion.
De Clercq rides to the usual barrage of questions for the stage winner and yellow jersey wearer combined. |

Stage five: The big mountains
An early break including young rider's jersey wearer Blaudzun. Will they let him go?
They have but it turns out the break has not been given much breathing room. Obviously he is too much of a threat to the GC to be given a massive gap.
Blaudzun shows that he is the dominant rider in the breakaway as he rides away for KotM points.
Blaudzun could not survive on is own after his compatriots could not contribute to the base much more.
Lino of Bigmat is launched by a team mate up the final climb. It's touch and go for De Clercq now as he fights to keep his yellow jersey that he took yesterday.
Lino was the best climber today and his strike on the GC today might just win him the yellow jersey.
So just who has won? Has De Clercq kept the jersey?
Lino has took the stage by just under a minute.
Lino has overwhelmed De Clercq and takes the GC of the Tour Mediterranean!
Murn takes the points classification of the tour.
Lino appears on the podium for a second time after he claimed the points on the mountain at the end of the stage today.
De Paoli performed well enough to take the young riders jersey today. Blaudzun is the highest placed non-Italian.
BigMat won the team classification, helped by consistent performances by many team members and the GC win of Lino.
Team manager comment:
A fifth place in two classifications is good for us, unfortunately Bolts couldn't pull off a podium in the GC. In fact, Blaudzun as a big surprise for us. Bolts was not in shape so at least he has an excuse for his awful performance.
Kloden comment:
Not great but I'm happy for Blaudzun. He over-performed and has made a name for himself. I am coming up in the next European hilly classics before I take part in Paris-Nice. The manager has said that I will likely not take part in Le Tour de France but I will have a more free role in La Vuelta. Or I can be a domestique in Le Tour and have a slightly free role in La Vuelta. He said that the choice is mine. I'll release my decision after Paris-Nice when I find out what I'm capable of.
