Vuelta a Burgos Discussion
SportingNonsense
Once the Tour of Pologne ends, it is time for the 3rd HC Stage Race of the month - a mountains opportunity for all those who did not fancy the trip to Portugal. There is the added challenge though of a team time trial - plus a hell of a lot of narrow roads.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2012%20Routes/burgos.png

Susprisingly though, the field is not as stacked in the mountains as some other races have been this season. Two names clearly stand out, as two of the promotion fighting teams go head to head: i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/pirelli.png Jurgen van den Broeck vs i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Jose Rujano. If the race all comes down to the final stage, then one of these two should surely win it - but have their teams brough strong enough TTT support to keep them in contention?

The favourites for the TTT will surely be i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png TCS Bank, and they will hope to use it to launch Vladimir Efimkin to a strong result. Perhaps the TT skills of Lucas Schadlich will also be able to help i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/siemens.png Vadim Ratiy enter the final stage in a strong position?

Over at Bianchi, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/bianchi.png Manuel Lloret is a big fan of this race having been 3rd last year, and 2nd in 2010. He can call on strong support as well, from the likes of David de la Fuente - with a couple of stage race victories already under his belt this season.

The other top climber on the startlist is i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/csc.png Igor Anton. Spanish rider, Spanish team, Spanish race - he will surely have the home support!

Others hoping to be in the GC mix are: i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/emu.png John-Lee Augustyn, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Rothaus.png Ryder Hesjedal, i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Cerne.png Pedro Nicacio, and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/calgiant.png Peter Stetina.

There are two flat stages, but not a lot of the top sprinters have made the journey here - thus giving an opportunity to some of the lower tier sprinters. Double Tachira stage winner i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Jorgensen will race competition from the TCS Bank duo i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/tinkoff.png Trusov and Markov, the UniCredit duo i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/unicredit.png Van Poppel and Bonnet, plus i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Trilux.png Keisse and i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Pokerstars.png Maaskant.

The hilly stage, focused around it's uphill finish, is likely to be contested by many of the GC riders. But if not them, then i1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc512/ANFreeman/Jersey%20Sprites/Aker.png Roux should go strongly.

This is probably a good one for my former rider Augustyn he is an attacking style of rider and a gusty climber. Like the chances for the Emu climbing squad to cause an upset - at least thats what I hope keep those Pokerstars and Pirelly away from the top spots in the CTour!

I can only hope for a stage win from here, though that will be very, very hard. I can't see Roux win an uphill sprint, and Jørgensen will most likely struggle to have power left for the sprint finishes, meaning I'll have to cross my fingers for successful breakaways, with Akerrider(s) in it!

Will be interesting to see if Anton can mix it with Rujano and VDB on the final mountain stage, with Ratiy also being a strong outsider, can't forget completely about another rider racing at home; Lloret.

Without any expectations i can´t be disappointed. My goals are similar to ember´s.

I'm glad the TT is a team event. Hopefully the team doesn't drop Stetina, and he can lose as little time as possible.

I can only be happy comparing this startlist with Volta a Portugal. I just hope Nicácio can hold onto a top10 placing, which may be achievable given the hilly stages, where he usually disappears, are almost suppressed here.

Anyway it will all boil down to VDB and Rujano imo. There are only 20km of TTT, so that won't make much impact in the outcome of the race.

btw nice preview SN.

Yeaaa a weak start list for Anton, hopefully the Spanish crowds push him to victory, or at least a top 3.

Come on Ratiy, I need a good result! Hopefully sending Schadlich, Müller and Li (together with Ratiy himself) should give me a good result in the TTT

Rujano to take it I think with Anton in third.

Hoping for a top 10 by Hesjedal.
Also a breakaway win by Velits, Von Kleinsorgen or Blank would be great.

last chance for Rujano to collect some points this season, hopefully he won´t be caught behind in split like he already did once...

Can always hope that Niemiec will surprise, but I don't expect much.

We've done alright this season when we aren't top favorites. Quite few breakaway victories, hopefully we send someone decent into that stage 5 break and see what happens!

Failing that, finishing within 10 mins of VDB and Rujano will suffice Smile

Shame Nordhaug crashed, he's the type of rider that could have sneaked away in a breakaway. Thought Jørgensen had the perfect position for the sprint, but he didn't seem to have it, at least he was in the mix, which is good. Interesting days to come for those with overall ambitions.

I´d never say Maaskant can be rated as outsider in sprint. He showed he can though, with strong 4th place Pfft

Weird result with none of the favourites near the front - I choose to believe it is the narrow roads.

Nice result from Niemiec, although the narrow roads messed that up for some of his rivals. Still, I'm happy that he gained a little bit of time.

It's a short hill top finish at the end of a long flat run, which from my experience always plays out wierd.

That said I wouldn't have expected the break to make it. Bianchi masterfully moving their pieces in play - though Rujano is still the overwhelming favourite really.

I still actually fancy (hope!) a surprise in the last stage.

That was brilliant by Nordhaug, just brilliant. And very nice reporting of the last 2 kilometers, SN, thought Nordhaug didn't have the legs seeing how far he was behind in the "Reis-picture."

I'm over the moon, kind of magic to see one of our two Norwegians takes a win for us. If the coming stages are just like this one, with narrow roads, it's probably going to be a lottery all the way through. Can only cross fingers we continue to join the breakaways, but we've already got more than I expected out of this.
