The Runners thread
cactus-jack
I don't know how many there are here who are interested in running, but if there are any they deserve a thread of their own. Do you simply jog twice a week or are you a semi-pro? What's your goals, etc?

Personally I do long distance running, mostly 10k or half-marathon. My main goal this season is a top 20 in the "Midnight Sun Marathon". Keep in mind, I'm talking about the half-marathon. At the moment I'm trying out a new technique, forefoot running. I've been a heel-striker ever since I started running so its many years of training that I have to un-learn. Do any of you have any experience with forefoot running?

A guy (fellow co-worker) who plays or played football and who I once ran was/is much of a heel striker, whereas comparatively I'm more of a forefoot runner. Now I don't know if one of us is abnormal, or both. I tend to think I run quite normally.
That is when I can run, as I'm currently injured (iliotibial band syndrom).

I am a runner too! I achieved a 3rd place in the national competiton and a 7th place in the national championship relay 4x600m. My favourite distances are everything up to 5000m.
My personal bests are:

60m: 9.66 (track, outdated)
80m: 11.79 (track)
100m: 14.10 (track)
600m: 1.47.79 (track)
800m: 2.31.97 (track)
1000m: 3.21.27 (track)
1500m: 5.32.30 (track, outdated)
5000m: 21.45 (road)

Oh, reason for the times compared to results: I'm 14 Pfft

Pretty decent times, that there. I'm anything but a sprinter so I prefer everything above 10km Smile

Five months of running with a painful knee and no obvious explanation for the pain, but that infected teeth. Season jeopardized.
Tooth removed, and less than 48 hours later I've just run 20 km without feeling pain in my knee (well, a little). Unbelievable. But I'm finally back in business (and overweight).

One's to question what kind of health system we have in this country where it takes like 5 months to get a teeth removed.

I'm hoping to start running competitions again in more or less one month, if I don't break something else in between. Smile

I used to run, got a great time of 18.43 on 5km when I was 16. Had to stop because of my feet, so then I started cycling.

Geez, I think it took me 40 minutes to run 9km, but that was when I was pretty young.

My best that I know of for 800m was (2:30) but again that was a few years ago when I still ran.

I have never ran farther than 5K.. I think I would die before I even came close to 9 because I get very tired close to the finish of a 5.

I actually got a bit worse at running since I started cycling, which I heard is normal, because you use very different muscles. Got better at cycling, though Grin

Can anybody tell me how much I should run to start with? I'm in very bad shape(lack of sport for over 3 years). I already started swimming twice a week but I want to start running again.
Pozzato sucks!

Not really different muscles, they're used differently though.

It depends on how your muscles cope with it. Probably not more than 1 hour in the beginning, even less (below 30 minutes won't help you much though).
If you manage to run 2 hours but need 2 weeks to recover, you won't gain as much as if you run 1 hour every other day, etc.

I do some running. 15, bests at the moment are:

100m: 13.5
200m: 29.7
800m: 2min27

Plus I can do two miles in 14 minutes, with a hill in the middle. And some descent.

Back in competition this afternoon, for the first time in 10+ months. Smile
16,2 km (3 laps of 5,4 km), almost only on the road, with some climbing (nothing excessive though).
I don't trust that darn right knee too much, we'll see whether it holds.

I'm glad to see this thread still live and kicking.

Had a timed run a week ago, 22.55.92 on 6km with a littlebit of headwind. Kinda pleased, but I'm looking forward to getting another month of training before I do my final timed run on this route.

I'm back with two knees, and a couple of blisters on my toes. I knew it was a bad idea to use new shoes that had barely done 15 km before.
The circuit was different from last year. Only two laps, but more climbing, some paths, and lots of cold wind (13°C. Summer, anyone ?), and a couple of rain showers. Meh...
I warmed up poorly, and sort of paid it during the race. I never felt too comfortable, or say, aggressive or ready to take the pain as much as I should have. I didn't feel great. I'm not even (too) tired right now.
I ended up 49th on a field of 134 riders. Some guy I beat last year ended around the 35th place, two or three minutes in front of me. It's realistic to think I should or could have been there. Oh well...
16,2 km in 1:08'09". 4'13" per km, that's not too bad given the conditions, and given it was my first race in 10 months.
I will try to do better in two weeks, I guess I should be able to focus more on what I'll be doing then. Pfft
