Yee-haw howdy partners for the fourth Protour outing of the Tour of California.
Never have the parcours been more demanding than in this edition with the ascent and summit finish on Mount Baldy being a particular highlight along with Sierra Road on an earlier stage four. Styling itself as the fourth grand tour we also have a 24km time trial that slots neatly in between the two big summit finishes.
With the Giro in full swing, California welcomes Vuelta hopefuls Alberto Contador, Rubén Plaza (2nd here in 2011), Justo Tenorio and Beñat Intxausti.
These four Spanish amigos will no doubt be cheered on by the huge Hispanic community, but we know who the U.S of A will really be behind that it is the maestro himself Taylor Phinney who may well have requested this course to fully prepare the 21 year old sensation for the Tour de France.
The quality of stage racers deosn't stop there with Andrei Kashechkin, Vladimir Karpets, Stefan Schumacher, Martijn Keizer, Robert Kiserlovski and Peter Velits also joining us.
Plenty of other high class cyclists also in attendence including former two time winner David Zabriskie who may be modifying his ambitions just to focus on the time trial here.

I had forgotten I actually sent a team leader to California for once. Not a great route for Intxausti though, a Top 10 would be great

I had to send Tenorio here after Santander cleaned up in Cali last year, 3 stage wins and the KoM jersey, if only this season was so easy.
A Podium would be a good result.

Probably a bit tough for a high GC placing for Dave Z but hopefully he and Sivtsov can rip it up (a bit).

Hopefully, Efimkin will be agressive in hilly stages to gain some time before the mountain stage, I hope for some solid result overall from him.
And hopefully, I will be lucky with sending Jerome Coppel here. But it will be hard to beat Dave Zabriskie for sure..

Obviously this is a big race for the team, sending only Americans. Need Phinney to really shine here. Van Garderen could also ride well, hopefully without hurting Phinney's overall chances.

Sinkewitz might not be a GC favourite, but he does stand a chance in two or three of those stages. Obviously, I've come to learn that my team sucks, so I have zero expectations no matter how justified they would be |

8 seconds and some splits, that was an excellent start to the tour.

good start getting almost a minute on some good riders, and picking up decent stage placings

Well, this was a stage where Sinkewitz should have done more. Goodish result, though. |

I wonder if Hugenhaben is going to be leader now when Pedraza lost a minute. The race seem equally suited to both.

This was probably a waste of race days for Schumacher.

Nice! Great ride by Grippo, and Diggle made the front group. Not bad, not bad at all.

Perfect work by the Carmeuse - Bouygues Telecom train. I don't get to say that often

At least the most working team gets the stage win. Hopefully I will experience this with my team later in the season as well. |

See that 4th place? Richeze's best result of the season.

I would have been willing to bet that Intxausti would have got himself held up there. But somehow, he didnt! A great turn of fortunes for him, with plenty above him who should ultimately drop below him by the end of the race.
