5 Jours de Dunkerque Discussion

Dunkirk, home of the most cowardly day of national heroism ever, but who will run away from the opposition in this race?

It will all be decided on day 4, when the repetition of a cobbled climb multiple times will sort the men from the boys, the French from the English, those who will stand and fight, from those who will run back across the channel.

For the Brits, Blythe leads the way, he will be hoping to take advantage of the three flat stages to gain some time, in a way he would deny is cowardly. Meanwhile the French challenge is lead by Gaudin and Coyot, men for whom attacking is the only answer, and who will fight till they drop.

The main threats are from Belgium though, which is odd, because the Belgians gave up long before Dunkirk last time, with Veelers and Vanspeybrouck ready to show how the low countries have improved over the last 70 years, they will be looking to surprise northern Europeans like Hushovd and Kluge, and if at any time the race is neutralised, expect them to attack.

After the De Panne Tour when the pack rather shockingly allowed riders to ride away from them, I do not know what to expect here.

The stages are slightly better arranged so we should get a decent battle royale on stages 3 and 4 I am guessing. Niels Albert just loves to romp away and win these type of things, so my moneys on him.

Normally a perfect race for Boom as he combines cobbles with hills better than many others. But as he is aiming the ITT stage races I decided not to send him here.

So Vantomme with the help from Cucinotta is here to grab at least one stage. Unfortunately Mohs, Hushovd and Veelers are also here...

So I hope for a breakaway by Kunitski or Passeron again to have any chances for a high GC. Wink

Stage 4 looks perfect for Vanspeybrouck's talents, given that he is the best cobbler in the field at going uphill. I do wonder if my team will be strong enough, given that I had to split my cobbled domestiques between here and Herning. Vanspeybrouck is still winless this season and I would rather that he didn't finish that way.

are you racing in Herning?

Hoping that Hushovd can show the good form that he had early in the season!

As long as Blythe and Veelers don't collect too much bonus seconds in the sprints, this looks like a perfect race for Bpost to shine.

But as we all now that cobbled races don't go the way we expect, I might even hope for a well-timed breakaway attempt from my several average cobblers like Kvist or Meersman.

Apart from that, the sprints should come down to Vantomme vs. Mohs, but behind them, the sprinting field has a great depth here.

Still I expect at least a podium from either Kvist or Croket, who both strangely didn't bother to compete in sprints so far this season.

2 men in top 10 is good, would be great if one of them can take atleast a podium place.
Nice suprise too have the KoM jersey!

AGAIN some incredible stuff here...

Bar, Meersman and Bol (71, 64, 61 SP) finishing WAY AHEAD of Croket, Kvist and Minard (79, 77, 76 SP).
Needless to say anything. (Although I'm pretty pleased by a 7th place from Bar. If he just wouldn't be my top finisher.)

It`s always weird on flat stages with a tiny bit of cobbles. Somehow it`s becoming a real classic then in PCM sometimes.
Also the late sprint made it a strange final.

Good to see Vantomme delivering. I just hope he can get one stage.

And nice to see Passeron and surprisingly Schachmann being in top 20.

Not a bad stage for us. I wish Van Loocke had've sprinted at the end but that's alright. As long as Blythe doesn't get time.

Damn. This could have been a stage win here.
Obviously Vantomme had a good position on the left side but being blocked then and went on the right side and then being one of the fastest in the end.

Maybe he should try to hang on Pokerstars wheel instead of an own train. At least Cucinotta did fine.

Congrats to Mohs again. He can win now if I win in Berlin then. Wink

cio93
Meh. Croket fucks up the best sprint position possible. That could have been a second place easily.

Mohs once again proves why he is one of the world's best sprinters. I'm just happy that the breaks seem to be controlled.

Haussler does pretty well. Maybe he can do something similar in Berlin as he'll have a much better team then but Mohs showed why he's a big favourite and Vantomme may try to get some decent results to get as much money next yearPfft

Coyot with another Top5 and my personal goals here are achieved.

viking90
Bad positioning by Hushovd?
He did a great finish from that bad position thought.
Time to hang on the hills now for him.
