Rankings Update
SportingNonsense
Time for the next Rankings update, and since last time 8 races have passed. Tom Zirbel got himself in the right breakaway and hung on to take race victory in Turkey, to the frustration of Trilux – Falke and Matthias Kessler – although the German was at least the top scorer in the race. Venchi ProCycling also came away happy, as they were the top scoring team.

Kai Reus stepped up at the Tour of the Czech Republic to deliver GC victory for Promotion contenders Volkswagen-Siemens, although Proximus’ stage winning duo of Ben Nasser and Cavendish helped them to just outscore Volkswagen. It was a notable race for Cyclevox aswell, with 2 stage wins. Theyre not last in the rankings anymore, thanks to that – but it only helped them move up the 1 spot.

The other stage race in the period was the Tour of Japan and with 3 stage wins, you would have expected Chris Froome to come away as top scorer. But a final stage crash cost crucial ranking points, and he wasn’t going to win the race anyway – that honour going to David de la Fuente. Bianchi were the top scoring team aswell, but only just ahead of Jayco – Red Bull.

In the one day races, Team Bianchi showed that they can score strongly, taking 104 points from Mergelland – a race won by Vespa’s Oscar Gatto. One day races were Vespa’s best moments of recent races, with Pozzovivvo taking 2nd in Appeninio, behind Bpost’s Vanendert. Bpost showing that they can win classics, even if not they struggle to do so in the cobbles that make up their top strength. The second HC cobbles race came in this period, Profonde van Drenthe, and Koppert demonstrated how to dominate a race with 1st and 3rd – netting them 226 points. Team Trilux – Falke took note and then went even better. 1st, 2nd and 5th in the Rund um den Eschborn-Frankfurt. Lower category than Drenthe, so they scored less than Koppert with 189, but still more than tripled the total of the next best team, Rapha Condor. In the other classic in the period, Hollister took victory with Staf Scheirlinkx at Battenkill.

So how does this affect the rankings?

Well, continuing the pattern already established the two top scoring terms were Rapha Condor - Qhubeka and Jayo - Red Bull. Both riding in 2 stage races and 5 classics. Rapha Condor took the lead after Turkey before Jayco RB took it back - but a 0 pointer for Jayco at Drenthe allowed Rapha to close the gap. The final stage crash in the Tour of Japan has proven key. It hurt Rapha more than Jayco and as a result, Jayco Red Bull hold onto the division lead - by 1 point!

With Jayco safely in the promotion zone by over 1000 points, its already looking like they may take one of the 4 guaranteed promotion spots, but the battle is close for the other 3. Stage race victories for California Giant and Bianchi, plus good other results, has helped them climb to 3rd and 4th, meaning Volkswagen-Siemens slip to 5th despite also winning a stage race. Their lack of depth is maybe showing, as Reus took 160 of their 166 points in Czech Republic, and they scored 0 points in both Drenthe and Eschborn-Frankfurt, but they did race less then Cal Giant and Bianchi in this period, so are clearly still a threat.

Not racing at all - perhaps due to the lack of mountains on offer - were Aker Solutions, yet they remain high up in 6th. Bpost continue to climb up, and Proximus are one of the big climbers - from 15th to 8th. Pirelli and Hollister lose positions, but maintain their Top 10 spots. The big climbers though are Team Trilux-Falke. They went into Eschborn-Frankfurt in 18th place (already up 2 from 20th), but such was their domination - and such is the tightness of the rankings - that this one day result catapulted them up a further 6 spots to 12th. Just over 230 points separate 8th to 18th, so there is a lot of position changing to come no doubt.

Rothaus and UniCredit both move into the Top 20, at the expense of CSC-Orbea and Saab-Scania, while the Drenthe result is a key part in helping Koppert climb to 22nd. Meiji also rise up - 3 places - in their tight battle with Oz, WWE and Focused. A battle that Cyclevox and now bottom placed Cerne will hope to join.

In the individual rankings, Jonathan Bellis has led all through this period and extended his lead over Alarcon with a Top 10 finish in Germany. Fellow puncheur teammate Chris Froome has climbed 18th places to 7th, while Alex Dowsett just missed out on making it three British Rapha Condor puncheurs inside the Top 10 placing just below Domenico Pozzovivvo who has climbed 2 spots to 10. Mori and Di Maggio are now just outside the Top 10, with gains of 6 and 15 respectively.

Race victories have helped De la Fuente up 85 places to 19th, Veelers 33 places to 20th, Wegmann up 19 to 38th, Reus up 103 to 43rd, Vanendert up 61 to 74th and Scheirlinckx up 308 places to 128th. Zirbel's victory were the first points of his season and he is now 73rd.

The overall top scorer over these 8 races was Hassen ben Nasser, scoring 234 points from 5 races, having only taken 8 points from his first two races of the season. He climbs 318 spots to 32nd.

Really good period of racing for me, i hope i get some further good results with Wegmann and Kessler in the next hilly races and some decent results with Haussler.

Bushwackers
I've been rooting for Aker Solutions, Pirelli - Alfa Romeo, and Bpost throughout this season. Looks like you guys are all doing really good, lets hope the good luck continues Grin

roturn
Nice period for me. 8th best of all teams although Boom and Vantomme had just 1 race day or so.
Thanks to a strong Turkey by Hermans and Passeron. A few more of these unexpected results and the top 10 is possible.

Just kidding, but why not. Banana

Very nice with another update on the rankings, eventhough we haven't been racing.

I'm surprised we're still that high. I strongly doubt we can continue to perform surprisingly well in races that Alarcon does not participate in, but we'll see, hopefully we can continue to surprise. Smile

I think it will come down to June for us, I planned that month terribly bad, with only 4 riders participating in Guatemala, but if we survive June well inside the top 10, we can hopefully be there at the end of the season aswell.

But it's very close behind the top 2/top 5, and I'm excited to see what the rest of the season brings!

Our success will come down to August and September. As long as the gap between us and 10th place doesn't get to far away and we get a lot of points from the Tour of America I'll be happy. But really I'm already thinking about next year Rolling Eyes

Great update SN Wink

Would probably have some more points if Kessiakoff didn't crash in Japan.. Doing a little too bad, actually.

I dont think, Cyclevox and Cerne "hope" to join the battle for last place Pfft

Anyway, atleast Meiji moved up a few spots. Although that was one of our better chances to get points.

As long as I'm anywhere but last, I'm happy Pfft

The next month could either go really well for us, or terribly. Looking over my race planner yesterday, I realised it will likely go poorly...

Still, an exciting battle forming between Jayco and Rapha. Should be an interesting one for the rest of the season.

Wow, maintaining a top ranking position going into May is superb. Not really sure whether we can keep challenging the red hot Rapha Condor squad, but good steady all round scoring from the likes of Mori and Moreno is doing the business.

It's a big gap to VolksWagen and Bianchi, it will take quite some pulling back too.

As ever I am always looking back at Pokerstars and awaiting theor and TCS Bank's big push!

A bad period for me, a fail both by Marzano and Ratiy... Luckily Reus performed well, but with the strategy I got (4 top riders, not much else) I need all of them to perform. ANyway, even if I hope for promotion the longterm plan has always been about promoting next season, then I will have both Flügel maxed and my talents will be nice support riders ;-) I will also (most likely) make all my goals, so should give me a hefty budget to play around with.

To me it seems like Jayco and Rapha are untouchable, shows the effect of a strong team and selecting the right races, specially Gadret has been able to avoid the big climbers.

7th place is so far beyond my expectations. I guess it goes to show what can happen when Vanendert remembers that he is a team leader. If I can score well at Dunkerque and also at Herning then I should be able to set myself up for a top 15 at the end of the season, which will fulfill my goal.

One point! One tiny point! Congrats to ANF for moving off the bottom!

11th not bad I suppose at this stage.

Hope to start scoring some more soon though.

Bianchi seem to be making their move, will be an interesting promotion battle between a few of those teams there.

I'm going to lose even more places in May, this isn't our strongest part of the season.

We will be very active in June though, so watch out Wink

Still looking good for Oz, imo Wink Next month, all we hope for is Tour of Southland, where Cooke needs to get his first stage-win!
