Hello all! My name is Tim Roe, and I am a proffessional cyclist for the BMC Racing Team. For those of you who haven't heard of me, here is a relatively short biography..
I first started to ride bikes when I was 14, following my brother Andrew's lead. After riding with the U17's for my local racing club in Adelaide and a few years of punching above my weight and catching the eyes of the locals, I signed with top Australian Continental team Savings & Loans, based in Adelaide.
I had some good results with S&L, and although I didn't really see cycling as a career choice, I still took it very seriously. The first time I realised that riding could be my occupation, was when I won the Tour of Malysia in 2008. After that I started to realise I could really contend, and signed with Lance Armstrong's Trek - Livestrong U23 team.
That season was great for me, and although my results didn't stand out specifically, I grew a lot and developed some great relationships. In September 2010, I crashed in the Tour l'Avenir, and broke a collarbone. It was near the end of the season, and whili I was sitting in my hospital bed, the guys from BMC walked in and offered me a contract for 2011! I was amazed and extremely thrilled to sign with a ProTour proffesional cycling team!
I am a climber/stage racer. I love the mountains and I feel on my day, I can really compete! My main skills that can improve are on the hills, my explosiveness, and my time-trialing! Once I master all these skills, as well as my climbing, I feel I can really be a GC threat in the Grand Tours. But that is still a long way away, and this year I will be focusing on gaining experience and improving my skills. I will concentrate on week-long stage races like Tour of Austria and Tour of California!
My ex-Livestrong teammate Taylor Phinney also signed a contract with BMC, and now we live together in Lucca, Italy. We cannot wait for the season to start!
I came up with the idea to write this blog after reading very successful blogs by riders like Dominik Nerz and David Veilleux among others.
I hope I have attracted your attention enough, and that you will follow my season on this blog!
See you soon, Tim!

Hi guys.
Since I'm Aussie, I will be participating in the national champs later in January in the road-race and ITT. I am feeling pretty good for the races and the Tour Down Under but first we have the team presentation, which is tomorrow. I can't wait to talk to Cadel and the other lads, as well as management and everyone else who works for the team. I'll keep you posted on all tomorrows events and then the season kicks off in Ballarat for the National Champs..
See you soon!
Tim.

Hi guys,
I know I promised that the team presentation was today, but it turns out it was just a very short media event and there wasn't even a team photo. This is very dissapointing but I thought I may as well do my own little presentation, here is a list of the team's riders and a short paragraph on the leaders:
Cadel Evans
Date of Birth: 14/2/77
Weight: 68kg
Height: 174cm
Years Pro: 9
Cadel is one of the best riders in the world, but has been labelled an underachiever due to his lack of a grand tour win. We hope to change that this year when the team will do everything in it's power to win him the Tour de France. He will also participate in the Tirreno Adriatico, USA Pro Cycling Challenge and Tirreno - Adriatico.
Allesandro Ballan
Date of Birth: 6/11/79
Weight: 73kg
Height: 190cm
Years Pro: 6
A terrific classics and cobbles rider, the former world-champion will be our leader in many of the one day classics and a major participant in the Giro and Tour. His importance cannot be underestimated.
George Hincapie
Date of Birth:29/5/73
Weight: 77kg
Height: 190cm
Years Pro: 16
George is one of the best Domestiques in the history of cycling. He has bean teammates on 8 TdF victories with Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador and will look to make it 9 with Cadel this year. Amazing teammate and also three-time USA Road Race champion.
Taylor Phinney
Date of Birth: 27/5/90
Weight: 82kg
Height: 193cm
Years Pro: 0
Taylor Phinney is one of the most exciting young riders of the last few years. His time-trial skills are breathtaking and is tipped to be a future world champion. He is one of the favourites for the 2011 USA TT Championships and will be a huge part of BMC and racing in general for the future. We are also very good mates.
and of course...
Tim Roe
Date of Birth:28/10/89
Weight: 66kg
Height: 182cm
Years Pro: 0 I am looking to have a good first season and can't wait for the Tour Down Under!

Finally, the day I've been waiting for. The season is starting and today I will be battling it out for the Australian champions jersey for the season. Then on Tuesday, it's the ITT which should be interesting!
Australian Road Race Championships
Cadel, Simon Gerrans and Heinrich Haussler are the races real favourites but I will do my best and give myself the best chance possible. It felt great to finally be in my BMC uniform for a race and let's hope I can get off on the right foot for 2011!
The first break had four riders and it looked like Graeme Brown, Wesley Sulzberger, Chris Sutton and one of the HTC riders, probably Leigh Howard since Renshaw and Matty Goss usually don't attack early.
It was good to have a nice chat to Cadel out there and he is just a really nice guy. The course was very updown, updown and the now 10 man break currently had a 5 minute lead according to the timecheck. The guys in the peloton weren't pushing very hard but nobody was really worrying and were just enjoying the summer sun.
Now at 40kms to go, the break apparently had a 9'00" minute lead! They were looking good for the win and that's quite dissapointing as I was looking forward to an exciting end.
Garmin, who had 5 riders in the race, finally decided to react with 30kms to go but I think it may have been a little late.
At 10kms, Cadel and I both went for broke and set off together. The break had a lead of 6 and a half minutes so we were being slightly optimistic I think.
Apparently Graeme Brown had won the race. A great achievement by him, but very dissapointing since we couldn't catch them. Garmin Cervelo really should have done more this race I think.
We were soon joined by Michael Rogers and Matt Hayman but were then caught and the peloton sprint was on. It was won easily by Allan Davis ahead of Heinrich Haussler.
Overall Rankings
1. G. Brown - Rabobank - 4h55'44"
2. W. Sulzberger - FDJ - +0"
3. W. Clarke - Leopard Trek - +0"
4. B. King - Team Type 1 - +0"
5. L. Howard - HTC Highroad - +0"
...
17. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +5'48"
A little disappointing not to be up there, but still I'm happy for Graeme. This will be a highlight of his career so far and I'm very happy for him and his team. Focus is now on Tuesday's Individual Time Trial..

Yep, NCs with small pelotons are always tricky. But you at least tried something in the end.
Great report, an enjoyable read. Keep it up!

@JD317 Thanks. He did finish second overall in the Inst. Osterreich-Undhfart so he has the ability, it's just all about execution. I wish the new DB had the Tour of Utah, since that is one of his favourite races and he finished 11th there overall earlier this year. |

Hi guys,
I forgot to tell you all my early season schedule so I thought I'd post it up before today's ITT Championhsips.
Santos Tour Down Under - 19/01 - 24/01
Vuelta a Mallorca - 06/02 - 10/02
Tour of Oman - 15/03 - 20/02
Strade Bianchi - 05/03
Settimana Coppi e Bartali - 22/03 - 27/03
A great schedule of mainly one-week tours and I will be travelling all over Europe, and the exotic Oman. Riding the Settimana Coppi e Bartalia I will be aiming to be selected as leader which would be exciting. The Strade Bianchi will probably be my only one-day classic of the season so that should be a great learning experience.
Australian National Time Trial Championships
Cadel was again favourite but he is really out of shape and told me this morning that he will just cruise along and isn't expecting to win. I will do my best and top 5 isn't beyond me. My tip is Cam Meyer, Jack Bobridge or Richie Porte for the 38.1km course.
Travis Meyer set off first for Garmin as Cadel and I warmed up on the exerice-bikes out the back.
Simon Gerrans set off soon enough and I was up next. I stepped up to the ramp and I was off in no time. Heinrich Haussler had set the best intermediate timecheck at 19'10"..
I had really gone for it in the first half and set the best time at the 25km timecheck! I was feeling really good today!
10kms to go and I hadn't been bested in the timecheck yet, but the legs were really hurting.
I spotted the white and blue jersey of Simon Gerrans ahead of me and chased him down like a madman. He just beat me to the line, but I really enjoyed that ride.
My final time is 6" behind Jack Bobridge in 2nd place and with lots of riders to come, including a speedy Michael Rogers, it'll be tough to keep the podium.
Michael Rogers has set the new best time and looks like he will wear the champs jersey but no, a rampant Cadel Evans has pipped him and now leads overall! He must have been messing with me earlier, because he really put in a solid effort to take that lead!
Again though, when we all thought Cadel had won it, Saxo Bank's little maestro Richie Porte goes and pips him on the line, casually taking the win. Very eventful ending to the race.
Richie will be happy with his fast start to the season
1. R. Porte - Saxo Bank SunGard - 54'57"
2. M. Rogers - Sky Pro Cycling - +11"
3. C. Evans - BMC Racing Team - +22"
4. J. Bobridge - Garmin Cervelo - +56"
5. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +1'02"
A very fun day out here, I always like a time trial. Now I have to focus on the Tour Down Under next week. Off to dinner now, see you guys soon!

The Tour Down Under starts today and I am pumped. Team Manager Michael Sayers has said that I could go in some breakaways this tour and that I can help out near the front of Alex Kristoff's sprint train also. Mark Cavendish, defending champ Andre Greipel and J.J. Rojas are all here so the sprints should be fun to watch. Can't wait for the hills so I can join in the fun!
These are the riders starting for BMC Racing Team this STDU:
Santos Tour Down Under
The race started slowly, but eventually a big break of about 11 or 12 formed and they gained about 4 minutes.
Well, 2 of the jerseys have already been decided for tomorrow. Davide Appolonio will wear the sprinter's jersey and L. Bertagnolli will don the KoM shirt.
While I was riding along, I noticed my old UniSA teammate Michael Matthews in the group and we had a chat about old times. Only been a year, but seems like forever ago I was riding here in Adelaide on my first of hopefully many Tours Down Under.
With 37kms to go I saw Vaconsoleil's Wouter Mol fly past me onto the attack. Wasn't the best move as he was caught very quickly.
The break had about a minute on the pack, and with 15kms to go, the trains started to form. The team set up a pretty impressive train, but I was just behind, getting ready to watch the fireworks.
The trains all soon fell apart as the breakaway was caught. I was at the front with Kristoff and became his new leadout man!
The HTC Train looked like it was near perfection, but it seemed they went a little early, as Cavendish was gobbled up soon and Haussler took the win on his home soil! Alex Kristoff sprinted well and came 12th, just behind Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish, in a dissapointing 10th.
I was happy with my race today, finishing firmly in the pack in 31st place.
1. H. Haussler - Garmin Cervelo - 3h27'43"
2. D. Bennatti - Leopard Trek - +0"
3. R. Feillu - Vaconsoleil - +0"
4. A. Geslin - FDJ - +0"
5. A. Greipel - Omega Pharma Lotto - +0"
...
31. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +0"
No riders lost any time today which is always good to see and a very well sprinted race from an unfit Alexander Kristoff was the icing on the cake. Stage 2 is tomorrow and it is another flat stage before stage 3 and 5 have some nice little hills for me to feast on. Until then..

In this mornings team meeting, manager gave me the green light for a breakaway. It's always fun to go out in front, and I will take full advantage.
The favourites were of course Cavendish and co. but I think someone else might win again today. He was looking really out of shape yesterday..
Santos Tour Down Under
I started the race as promised, in the breakaway. I was soon joined by Chris Sutton, F. Beppu, C. Vermeltfoort, A. Stauff and M. Tosatto.
We were again joined by more riders, this time 6 more, and our lead was out to 4'30".
85kms now and the break was 5'30"..
Finally, what we were expecting. The lead started to fall and with 30kms to go, was now at 3'23"!
8kms to go and we were just about caught. Mikhail Ignatiev and I both went on the attack looking for a miracle.
We were caught in the last km and faded back into the pack.
From what I could see, Cavendish had another great train set for him, but again, he was let out too early!
He was passed by several riders, and his old nemesis Andre Greipel took the win!
I finished 54th, but I was still happy with my race, and now I'm leading the team in 12th place in the GC.
1. A. Greipel - Omega Pharma Lotto -
2. H. Haussler - Team Garmin - Cervelo - +0"
3. R. Feillu - Vaconsoleil DCM - +0"
4. J. Kocjan - Team Type 1 - +0"
5. G. Ciolek - Quick Step Cycling Team
...
54. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +0"
GC:
Spoiler 1. H. Haussler - Team Garmin Cervelo - 6h51'28"
2. A. Greipel - Omega Pharma Lotto - +6"
3. R Feillu - Vaconsoleil DCM - +8"
...
12. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +15"
Points:
Spoiler 1. H. Haussler - Team Garmin Cervelo - 14 Pts
2. M. Tosatto - Saxo Bank SunGard - 10 Pts
3. R. Feillu - Vaconsoleil DCM - 8 Pts
...
13. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - 2 Pts
Mountain:
Spoiler 1. L. Bertagnolli - Lampre ISD - 16 Pts
2. M. Tosatto- Saxo Bank SunGard - 16 Pts
3. T. Leezer - Rabobank Cycling Team - 12 Pts
Young Riders:
Spoiler 1. D. Appollonio - Sky Pro Cycling - 6h52'10"
2. M. Kump - Geox TMC - +1"
3. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +3"
I'm very happy with my performance over these first two stages, and I think, snaring that Young Rider's jersey isn't out of reach. Tomorrow is the hardest stage of the race, and should be fun. |

Stage 3 has arrived and some big names such as Kreuziger, Hesjedal, Chavanel and Pozzato are here to maybe break away, but a mass sprint is still a possibility. I'm excited to get out there!
Santos Tour Down Under
The first break was a big one, with around 15 riders. The first sprint points of the day were awarded to D. Hondo.
All the BMC riders were positioned up near the front and I was very excited for the first big finish of the tour.
The break was caught with 80kms to go. Everyone seemed pretty happy to sit it out until the end.
On the start of the first small climb, Amael Moinard, Tom Leezer and Seb Hinault all attacked and the points were won by Hinault. They didn't get much time on the pack, and I was content to wait up until the last climb.
Moinard attacked again though and had 1'35" on the rest, with Hinault 50" ahead.
15kms now and Moinard caught his countryman and they had a 2'17" lead.
WIth 7kms to go, Hinault created a small gap on Moinard. Moinard was just ahead of me in the distance and he looked like he was struggling.
Moinard was caught and despite some unsuccesful attacks from many riders, including me, Hinault still had a 1'15" break!
He held on all the way and took an amazing win! Sergui Ivanov came in second with Brazilian champ Murilo Fischer in third.
1. S. Hinault - AG2R La Mondiale -
2. S. Ivanov - Team Katusha - +30"
3. M. Fischer - Team Garmin Cervelo - +30"
4. F. Pozzato - Team Katusha - +30"
5. P. Sagan - Liquigas Cannondale - +30"
...
26. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +30"
GC:
Spoiler 1. S. Hinault - AG2R La Mondiale - 10h18'19"
2. H. Haussler - Team Garmin Cervelo - +24"
3. A. Greipel - Omega Pharma Lotto - +30"
...
19. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +39"
Points:
Spoiler 1. H. Haussler - Team Garmin Cervelo - 14 Pts
2. M. Tosatto - Saxo Bank SunGard - 10 Pts
3. A. Greipel - Omega Pharma Lotto - 8 Pts
...
19. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - 2 Pts
Mountain:
Spoiler 1. T. Leezer - Rabobank Cycling Team - 20 Pts
2. M. Tosatto - Saxo Bank SunGard - 16 Pts
3. S. Hinault - AG2R La Mondiale - 16 Pts
Young Riders:
Spoiler 1. D. Appollonio - Sky Pro Cycling - 10h18'55"
2. J. Debusschere - Omega Pharma Lotto - +1"
3. M. Kump - Geox TMC - +1"
...
5. T. Roe - BMC Racing Team - +3"
Allesandro Ballan came in 13th for us which was good, but Hinault stole the show and will wear the leaders jersey tomorrow! Big stages coming up, hopefully I can get in the top 3 for young riders. |
