The first HC stage race of the 2012 season, and one with a startlist that justifies that! We go to Argentina for the 3th edition of the race. The past two years the race has been won by Rein Taaramae, a climber with a strong time-trial. He won't be defending his titel, though, as he is riding in the PT this year.
With 3 flat stages, 3 mountain stages and a time-trial we have a very varied field. We'll start by looking at the sprinters. We have names here like Greipel, Serebriakov, Haedo, Guillen, ... The key in the sprints will be positioning and a good lead-out, or just tagging along in another train.
The time-trial is relatively short, so the climbers shouldn't lose to much time here. The big favorite for the time trial is the young Schadlich. Although, after a mountain stage you never know, maybe Van den Broeck or Larsson will perform better.
Last are the big favorites, the climbers and we have some very big names present. Valverde is the big favorite, although Pozzovivo isn't to far away. Ratiy and Van den Broeck could challenge, especially with the time-trial. Another thing that might be decisive is the VERY narrow roads.

I think I probably made a mistake sending Pozzo here. I played Stage 2 in a career and it's in no way a mountain stage. It was so short in fact that the sprinter who took the leaders jersey on stage 1 was still race leader at the end of Stage 2.
It would suit Valverde better if there was a hilly stage in there - having said that I think it still suits him quite nicely as it is. |

I noticed that in the PCM.Daily DB, the 3 mountain stages are all set as hilly, so that might be a difference. That said, stage 2 is indeed for the more punchier types.

Certianly not a given for Valverde this one, he is up against most of the main protagonists in that recent Tachira race.
That one was highly unpredictable, I wonder whether we will get that here? CSC and WWE will be very dangerous from a breakaway again and leaving it to last mountain stage will be dangerous.
Six or seven fairly equally matched GC favourites, I notice VWagen have both Marzano and Ratiy here so they look like the strongest team to me.

There's no real mountain-stage here.. like Kami said: all stages are set as hilly, because of the final climbs being too short. Climbers will still have the best chances on these climbs, I guess.. a 81 MO/81 HI like Valverde's is perfect though. I don't think this race will be that unpredictable like Tachira. Almost every stage is completely flat til the final (climb), so it should be easier to control the pace/breaks.

They may be set as hilly stages in the Daily DB, thats down to Crue, but those climbs are more mountain than hill, hence why its different in the ManGame DB.

I'm really starting to regret setting a stage win here as a goal this season. I have my fingers crossed for D'Amore to surprise in one of the sprints.

I'm glad to hear they are set as mountain - gives me some more hope. Pozzo is quite an attacking rider, so I really hope he can get away.
Think that is how the race is most likely to be won - a strong climber going early at the bottom of the climb on Stage 6 and managing to get a couple of minutes. |
