i don't get what's wrong with it:?

you do need to understand the concorde agreement.
Basically, F1 has to be shown on free-to-air tv in major european countries until 2012/2013. This deal takes 50% of the races off free-to-air tv and to sky, who charge around £30-£50 to view thier sports package a month, which is ridiculous for a service which should be free until the end of 2013.
Not only that but F1 is the BBC's highest viewed show almost every race, and they are taking it away and still wasting money on bbc parliament, bbc 3 etc.
its not an injustice .... its a joke

jt1109
Yeah but BBC has to cater for all needs not just the F1 fans(which i am btw) and the amount of money they were paying for the F1 meant it was the most expensive show they were broadcasting in terms of person/pound and they couldn't justify it which is why sky came in to take the load and drop the BBC money outlay to be spent on other shows. Agree with the 30-50 pound it is a rip off and the money wasting on bbc p bbc 3 etc but bbc is there to cater to the needs of all not the needs of groups

bbc quote

"Given the financial circumstances in which we find ourselves, we believe this new deal offers the best outcome for licence-fee payers. "

Wiley
its not, they are spending around £900mil on the move to salford .... £22mil on a new talent show to compete with the x-factor,

Wiley
ok, f1 is overstaffed and expensive, but that is why it is the most watched show during the whole of the hungary gp weekend ... that many people cant be a small group

jt1109
i didn't say it was small it's just an overpriced sport and this is the best soloution in my opinion giving people the chance to watch live 10 races i think then extensive highlights of the rest for i think a third of the price.

Also they needed to pay for wimbledon and the open again this year so something had to go:/

Wiley
the open and wimbledon ..... those things on a weekday when everyones at work ..... that only reache a few milliona t best .... come on ... the BBC is supposed to cater to the masses .. its a public service ... funded by the public

In fairness, I think you have never seen extensive formula 1 highlights. They have that in Germany and its a load of shite. Usually extensive highlights should go for at least an hour. But when a TV station has to save money, that all will be cut down to a 30 minute show with ads flowing over the screen every 5 minutes with a duration time of at least 6. Its pretty useless to ask for extensive highlights.

I also think it would be a disgrace, seeing as they have an all british tam with mclaren who i believe have millions of fans in the uk and ireland who dont have sky sports. On top of that, I think Sky Sports would be pretty useless to watch Formula 1 in the UK because the BBC show is equally good. In other countries on the other hand (actually just germany) the free TV commentators are a load of shite. And if the french can keep it on the air with the financially troubled TF1 (theyve been broke for a longer time now) and Rai Uno can still shut out every one for F1 events then BBC can do the same...

I can watch the F1 for free in two different channels, and they were three until the last year. Pfft

The commentators are morons, though.

Who cares, I still get it off the internet free, and with the bonus that I have a choice between a bunch of channels (and I choose SpeedTV since they have the best commentators)

As of next year, I might be interested to know how you get that then Wink

the point is that next year, it wont be free full race on the internet, you have to hve sky to watch it on sky on line, and the bbc wont put it on iplayer because they dont have the rights.
Note; this is not just about the deal, but the way in which the bbc is ingnoring any response, as is FOM and sky. And about keeping sport free in the uk, as the only sport still free, in full is F1 and horse racing, and BTCC. Everything esle is either split or just pay tv

jt1109
have you tried to watch the horse racing though? It's just a big fashion show with ocasional horses running past(and they only broadcast 11 meetings this BBC(Channel 4 did 65 i think but i'm getting off topic here) they don't do it justice and if you want to watch it properly it's £25 a month on racingUK. Sport will no longer be free to watch in the uk apart from big events e.g the open, wimbledon, world cup, british grand prix, olympics because they can get more money from sky and to get these events BBC has to bid big! which subtracts money from everywhere else.

BBC = not free. Just thought I'd point that out. F1 was technically (i.e. not really) free when it was on itv, but now it's definitely not.

But Wiley, you're argument really falls down in a simple area: Sky could only bid for the F1 if they have significant enough customers (and therefore money) to bid for the F1 contract. These customers would also have to demand the F1 (which Sky will have researched) in significant enough numbers to make it financially viable. My long winded point is therefore, are there really vast numbers missing out? And even those are missing out are only missing out on half the races. I find it odd you seem to think you have some right to watch F1 for free, when F1 is a commercial venture and should thus be subject to markets forces.

ITV is as free as the BBC, you have to pay equal amounts money to watch both. The fact that that money all goes to the BBC is irrelevant
