Le Tour de France 2011
Stage 17: Gap > Pinerolo 179km
Stage Information (from cyclingnews.com)
The race heads into Italy via the Montgenèvre pass, climbs to Sestrières and then features a late complicating factor in the shape of the 7km Pramartino climb, off which the road descends steeply into the finish in Pinerolo. The overall contenders are likely to wait until that last test before making any move today but the temptation for most will surely be to hold something back for the epic test the next day. That once again gives breakaway riders another good chance of going all the way to the finish. In fact, it is likely to be their final opportunity to do so.

Climb to Pra Martino:
Descent to Pinerolo:
I hope we see the favorites fighting for the win for a change, but I doubt it.

Samu will win this stage... 46 kms downhilling before the Pramartino... May be Contador and Evans could stick to him... and a member of the break of the day. |

Too bad they don't climb Pra Martino from the other side, since that side looks harder.

Lets see if Sanchez can keep with Evans in a descent, he couldnt today!

Something to do with the rain maybe?

I find Samu a bit overrated when it comes to his descent skills. Don't get me wrong, he's a great descender, but I think people expect too much of him.
Curiously enough, I think his climbing and TT habilities are being underrated, and few people are mentioning him as a clear podium candidate, and I think he has a great shot.

I seriously doubt an attack from Sanchez on the long descent. The average percent is only about 4%, dropping ~1600 metres on 40~ kilometres.
Would definately be a huge surprise if he attacks on the long descent.

His descent skills aren't overrated, he just doesn't want to lose all in descent (that's how he described it last year). Although, I think he needs to understand that every second will count in this years Tour. The last climb fits him very well, so I except that the same trio could gain some time on Frandy, Basso and maybe Voeckler. |

His downhill skills might be a bit overrated. But to me it varies a lot with the downhill. On a very technical downhill he is amongst the very best. In a descent like today, that aren't overly technical and not very steep, is not one that suits him well, he doesn't have the same power as guys like Evans. Especially since he looked to on his limit on the climb.
But I agree with you about his climbing and TT ability. And I think the Alps suit him better than the pyrenees, with the longer climbs. He is much more of a diesel climber than most people think, most of the times he doesn't respond to attacks right away, he usually ride up slowly ala Basso, he can respond to an acceleration though, if it's needed, he is totally like Basso who doesn't seem to have one ounce of explosiveness in him.

I really agree with you schleck93, Sanchez's is quite good descender, but seriously, not the best, or one of them. And the point about comparising him to Basso is really good, really well said IMO.
I expect quite similar stage to what happened in Giro 2 years back. Only I think, breakaway will make it and the favourites will definetely racing on the last climb. And I seriously fear, Schlecks, especially Andy will loose some time again here. Frank, Ivan and Damiano as well..

I think it''s time for another Gilbert win! Too bad Lotto has only 6 left, is very difficult to control the breakaway. Maybe he will go in the break himself. |

Should be another interesting stage, looking for Schleckers to loose more time, for me it is only four man battle for the win (sorted by final placement).
Contador (sure winner for me)
Sanchez
Evans (will loose in the alps a bit)
Frank
Andy is just a baby playing with the real cyclist. He has enormous talent, but you cant win without a brain or basic knowledge of cycling tactics and ethics

I think Contador will be strong again and tries get some time back. |

If I remember correctly, Di Luca managed to split the group on that descent back in 2009, so I'm expecting the same outcome today, somebody splitting the group. Besides, I find this the perfect oportunity for someone like Cunego, if he's got his legs today. |

Possibly, but the descent was a fair bit drier than the climb yesterday |
