As you might know Gilbert is not a sprinter. And even so he has the chance to win the green jersey. Was that intented by the organiser? With those strange new regulations? |

He hasn't. Barring injury, the winner of the green jersey is Mark Cavendish.

The uphill finishes in the first week has suited him very well. He picked up points on those stages while Cavendish and the other top sprinters couldn't keep up with the pack.

The organisers designed a route favourable to Gilbert, with some stages ending up hills, and others having some hills very close to the finish. The Green jersey gives points for every stage finish, hence Gilbert has been able to collect plenty.
But ultimately, unless he continues to be extremely aggressive, it does seem like his lack of competivity in the bunch sprints - where the most points are possible - will prevent him from actually winning the competition overall.
Cavendish leads Gilbert by 20 points at the moment. There are only 2 more Cavendish stages, but you would expect Cavendish to gain at least 80 points on Gilbert there - its going to be very hard for Gilbert to find 100 points over Cavendish elsewhere.

Cavendish can gain 90 points, each stage win is 45 points And there is no doubt he will win those stages
And Cavendish can take points in the intermediate sprints in most of the mountain stages as well

There is an interview with Gilbert (in german), in which he says that he will try to win the jersey with the "mid sprints" (i don't know how it's called in english ). So he still has a real chance.

Gilbert could win stage 13 and 16 if he can get over the final climbs, but those stages are designed for the breakaway because they fall after tough mountain stages. Most intermediate sprint points come before the high climbs so Gilbert is out of luck once again.

Even if he wins both of them. Stage 13 is classed as a mountain stage, stage 16 a medium mountain stage - they dont give as many Green Jersey points.
And yes, many of the intermediate sprints Cavendish will still be around to go for - Gilbert would need to get in some breakaways there to actually win the sprints.
A lot relies on Gilbert getting in multiple breakaways, and are HTC really just going to let Gilbert go away like that?

Maybe Cavendish will be dropped on the first climb (2nd category) in stage 14 to Plateau de Beille.. Gilbert can take some points there, if the breakaway isn't big.. And he will have to beat Rojas there.. The last km of that sprint is uphill, so it's possible
He will have to be in a winning breakaway at stage 17 (Gap-Pinerolo)..
And at last, he will have to win the intermediate sprint just before Alpe d'Huez.. I hope he's able to follow on the Galibier |

Gilbert has already said that he hopes the Cav will not make the time @ Alpe D'Huez, but I'll be that Gossy, Eisel, Renshaw and possibly Bak and Pate will be there to make sure he does.
I suspect that Velits and Martin will be allowed to go for GC with support from T Jay.

Gilbert seems to be the only rider committed to the green jersey
Cavendish is not contesting many of the intermediate sprints
Rojas looks to have lost his determination to win
Hushovd couldn't care less about the jresey
Feillu wants it but then again doesn't have the team to win it
Gilbert contests every intermediate and final sprint, thats why he'll win it
Don't mess with this aussy!

Sorry, but have we been watching the same race? Cavendish has taken part in the majority of intermediate sprints, and won the last three (of the main sprinters) if I'm not mistaken.
Rojas has also taken part in them all, often finishing second to Cav.
Gilbert, however, finished way down in the pack yesterday, having given up the sprint role to Greipel, who is undoubtedly the better, and designated, sprinter.
He was also way off in the intermediate, being unable to follow the pure sprinters.
As said, Gilbert will have to get into some breakaways, whether over the intermediate sprints, or the whole stage if he wants to stay in with a chance.

People still think that Cav can't spring uphill? |

He has a chance simply because the organizers put 45 points at the end of each stage, 15 in the middle, and the best placed riders at these stages score the most points, Gilbert is one of the best placed riders.
If you are complaining that they are somehow favoring him because he has a chance of winning (when they are not), but your solution is for the organizers to change the rules to suit sprinters, i would call that contradictory.

If Vanendert, Greipel, Roelandts, Sieberg & Lang will work on those hills, they can get rid of the main sprinters like Cavendish & Farrar.. Especially Vanendert.. His only goal left is to help Gilbert to get the green jersey, because Vdb is out.. And Greipel & the other riders will help him when Greipel has no chance at all for winning the stage.. |

If Vanendaert pulls through on a hill he is definately losing Cavendish and Farrar, but also Roelandts, Sieberg, Lang and more importantly Greipel.

Gilbert could make it over the top today and go for the win. How many points are there?
