Hey guys, i am sure that some of you have a lot of knowledge when it comes to bikes, so I thought here would be a good place to ask for advice. I am from the USA, and cycling is not a very popular sport here. However, I have really grown fond of cycling as I have watched the Tour de France on tv growing up. I have been riding a decent mountain bike for 2 years that now needs some heavy repairs. I would like to purchase a brand new road bike, because I am interested in using it to cross-train for my cross country running. I am not sure if I will be racing at all, because I do not know of any races that exist anywhere near my home (unfortunately). I am willing to spend up to 1000 American dollars on a road bike. Will you guys throw out some ideas of good brands of road bikes that I should potentially buy? Thanks in advance! |

There's no way I'm helping a guy whose nickname is "Lance" something.
Go for Trek, or Specialized, something like that. They should have decent products around those prices, but if I were you I'd rather buy a second hand bike that's one or two seasons old, for that price. It's probably going to be as good as a brand new $1500-2000 one. |

I am also from the USA (Pennsylvania) and am ashamed of the lack of interest in the US. I too run Cross Country and use a bike for training. I have a trek bike that I bought for $750.

Second-hand is the best way to go. You can get good name-brand stuff with good componentry that's only 2 years old or so and not much mileage on it for under $1000. I'm partial towards Cervelo, because I have one. : ) |

Thanks for the quick responses guys! I will take your thoughts into consideration and search for some of the ideas you presented. I did find a bike for a reasonable price at about $600. Here is the link, https://www.dickss...93.4418012 I think this bike looks great appearance wise! But I am not really sure how it is performance wise...This will be my first road bike so i'm not very knowledgeable on the subject. What do you guys think? |

It's pretty small, only available in 43cm and 49cm. Important that you get a bike that fits your size. You may want to hit your local bike shop and get measured to find out what bike frame size would most suit your size. |

I'm not really sure what the sizing means... Also, because cycling is not popular around here, a local bike shop could be difficult to find haha. If it helps, I am about 5'6"-5'7" and 145 lbs. |

Try craigslist. I bought a Cannondale Caad 9 4 for $1200. Buying a used road bike is probably your best bet if you want to get something nice under $1000. I'm a big fan of Trek and would reccomend the Trek 1.5 or go with the Specialized Allez - they both can be bought for under $1000.

You would probably slot in at at 54 or 56cm frame. If you know your exact height and inseam than this site can be very helpful:

Leipheimer is about 5'7" and I think he rides a 52cm bike, but then I don't know the lengths of his legs vs. yours, or arms, or torso for that matter.

You must live in the middle of PA, because I'm right on the border of PA in Delaware, and they are all over the place. : ) |

Hey guys, thanks for all the help with answering my questions. I found a local bike shop I did not even know existed! I'm most likely going to purchase a brand new Trek 1.5 for under $1,000! |
