Santander's proud to continue it's sponsorship of Spanish cycling and we are back with a similar team, with only three riders leaving, all beacause they have reached the end of their careers.
In fact Santander's commitment to youth continues as we plan to have the recently returned Madrazo and Tenorio lead us in the Grand Tour's after showing what they can do in their recent loan spells. They will be ably supported by Lopez Garcia and Valls.
For the sprints Guerao and Ventoso lead the way, Santander averaged the highest sprint stage win percentage of anyone in the Pro Tour with those two, so we look forwards to seeing what they can do full time. Merino Criado is back from Vesuvio and will lend support, as will the experienced Aitor Galdos.
In the hills Cobo will be our main man, and we hope his all round skills will come to the fore in the pro tours bumpy terrain. He will be supported by as many other riders as we can find.
Santander has never rider cobbles before, and we are looking forwards to the experience, and not expecting too much from our team here.
We are looking forwards to the season and hope you follow us the whole way

Santander go big in attempt at home glory
Santander can announce it's squad for the Vuelta ciclista a Espana now and can confirm rumours that this may well be the strongest Grand Tour Squad ever assembled.
The nine riders brought on this tour will aim to beat the performance last year which included 3 stage wins and a 5th overall, by getting 1 rider on the top step of the podium, with 2 others aiming to be well within the top ten.
The team:
Angel Madrazo
Last years 16th place finish at his first ever grand tour attempt underlined this man's potential, with a top 30 in the tour also impressive, especially as they came while working for now rival Contador. However his numbers in the off season are unheard of in Spanish cycling, and rumour that he is matching Cunego's record up certain climbs refuse to go away. Also a very strong time trialler it is hard to see anyone beating him, although the pressure could get to him, especially as it's his first race of the season.
David Arroyo
Luckily David Arroyo is here, and he should dispel any chance of too much pressure, his 9th place last year sets him up well for a similar result this year, even while helping Madrazo. Brought in specifically for his cool head, and his experience including a second place finish in last years mountains, Madrazo should have a strong helper for every occasion.
Justo Tenorio
11th in the Vuelta and 12 at the Giro last year, although he suffered from crashes even then, this may well be the year for Tenorio to break through. He is understandably disappointed not to be leader, but it only seems to have fired him on and he has also shown soon excellent numbers over the winter, and is specifically targeting the first stage.
David Lopez Garcia
He came 21st last year, he is now our 4th best climber, expected to burn himself out on the first climb of the day. Not the best time trialler, but once the road start to rise, expect him at the front.
Rafael Valls
Expect him to be a help in the TTT as well as yet another climb threatening on the early slopes, does Santander ever run out of these riders?
Eduardo Gonzalo
Yet another climber, suitable for pulling back most breakaway riders on the small slopes, and some medium and big slopes as well.
Jesus Del Nero
Our climbers don't like flats, he does. Expect to see him every day controlling the breaks until the stages get interesting.
Imanol Erviti
The TTT needs helpers, here is one. Also he should be on the front when the breaks get away.

Can't see anyone having a chance against Madrazo and his back up team, to be honest.

Thanks, I am seriously worried about Plaza, with the Jack Wolfskin TTT machine hence having to go all in on the mountains, I'll be interested to see whether the AI handles it well.

I doubt that Plaza is a real contender for the first place though (maybe not even for the podium). Yes, the TTT is huge, but there are plenty of mountain stages. And Madrazo is 5 points stronger than Plaza in the mountains department.

Tour of Qatar: Boring
Vuelta Stage 1
Ok, so here I am at the first stage of the Vuelta and I am here training to get my cornering perfect and see how fast I can go round this course.
It really is a very technical route, so I am sure my two days preperation in Oporto will set me up perfectly for my goal of winning the Jersey today
The 16.4km route starts with a 300m uphill segment which may well surprise the pure TTers, and will certainly give me an advantage
After a long straight comes the hardest corner on the course, a slightly rounded hairpin bend
After heading back past the startline, we have yet another sharp bend
And again, right after, this S bend makes your acceleration out of corners vital to posting a good time at the upcoming checkpoint
After the checkpoint, where the top times will be just over 10 minutes, comes a string of downhill linked chicanes, this is the fastest bit of the course, although constant corners mean your speed stays at the 60km/h level
with 6km to go again we hit a very technical section
with 5km to go the finih line is in sight, if a long way away, and this really spurs you on
You weave back and forth the whole way, oscilating between uphill and downhill,
As I came up to the line I ran into Steurs also doing the same preperation, not sure why though.
And across the line I go, 21'30" was the fastest I managed in practise, with the adrenalin running through my veins I expect to go faster come the real thing in 4 months time

Steurs was sent in as preperation for Contador. Steurs won't be riding the Vuelta himself, but atm he is working for us as a scout of routes

Tour of Oman:
Only 5th on the mountain stage, but we successfully mocked the flat stages a bit.
So I'm here to preview stages 2 and 3 of the Vuelta, they are pretty dull, being flat and all, but as I seem to have some talent in this area, I have to run through them and spot any difficulties
Stage 2 starts with some awesome climbs, 16% plus in sections, these will suitably annoy all those teams who believe in sprinters
In fact the whole first 100km are brilliant, scarcely a flat section to be seen, and the constant up and down may well see gaps form if a break is not let go early
Afterwards though it gets dull, with flat countryside all the way through
In fact I was so bored I attacked my self on the sorry excuse for a climb with 22km to go
The finish line claims to be uphill, however 2% just doesn't cut it.
All in all, not a bad flat stage, one can only hope that all the sprinters will be removed in the first half
Stage 3 starts so promisingly, with a steep hill up front, unfortunatly thats as good as it gets
Not even a categorised climb means this real is a wasted race day for all involved, and at 236km it's a really long wasted day, so I'll just bail now
The management have promised the finish is interesting, and I guess it might be,
With 10km to go we start going uphill, not much, but hopefully just enough
Then the sprint is a straight downhilll run in, perfect for a late break.
My summary: Bad, but could be worse.
Hopefully I get to preview the mountains next time

Snatander's manager was screamed at for multiple hours today after their embarrassing showing in the Spanish National Championships.
Failling to place a single rider in the top ten, the Santander teams were accused of not caring about their country. And told that this, after failling to win the World TTT champion was tantamount to treason. In a cunning attempt to avoid taking the blame for his own poor tactics, the manager pointed out that the sprinters barely did anything this year, and that sprints are boring anyway.
Thus Ventoso, Guerao, Galdos and Merino Criado are on their way out.
David Arroyo is also up for sale, after falling in both the Giro and the Vuelta.

After the riots within the nation, and the managers accusations towards riders not performing, Justo Tenorio declared that he was unhappy at the team.
"I won't get a decent chance to prove myself, and hearing the manager accusing riders of not performing, I can only believe I will be next. Everyone knows that Angel is the star here, and my dream of winning the Vuelta seems ever so unrealistic at the team. I know that Team Festina has been looking at me for quite some time, and after having spoken til Angel about his time there, the feeling of joining up with Alberto Contador for one season before taking over the captains role is very tempting. I doubt that my manager will let me go, but if I'm to fulfill my potential I really want to make this transfer."
Which comments do you have on the matter?

You may have heard that Daniel Moreno may wish to leave Simply Red Bull. He is getting towards the end of his career, like Koldo Gil and thinks Santander have a real shot at something special next year.
We wondered whether Jesus Del Nero would be available, we are a massive admirer of his engine. Pedro Merino Criado and Francisco Ventoso are also riders earmarked for interest.

Santander looking for representation in the classics?
The spanish team Santander his particularly known for their strength in the mountains, with some of the most prestigious climbers and stage racers listed in their roster, who've proven to the rest of the ProTour they can dominate a GT if they want to. However this team has yet to challenge the bigger sharks for the PT crown mostly due to their lack in depth in the classics department. That is one of the areas Santander may want to upgrade come the transfer season, by granting the services of a rider who can give the team a notable presence in the most important one-day races of the calendar. Is this a real goal for the most nationalistic team of the circuit? That's a question only mb can answer.
