The past few years we've seen a couple of riders dominating road cycling, each one in their own specialty. Cancellara has been dominating TT's and also he dominated the Cobbled classics last year. Cavendish dominates mass sprints. Contador has won 6 Grand Tours and of course Gilbert has been winning all hilly classics last spring, not to mention Giro di Lombardia last year. Which of these feats do you think is the best?

Personally i choose Gilbert. Just the way he won & dominated. next to that i'm a belgian myself so .
Ive seen him racing in the tour of belgium. He was quite impressive as well
prevent hangovers --> stay drunk
pozzato, basically the most stupid cyclist around
RIP WW. Gone but not forgotten

Contador, by far. Gilbert only started dominating last year, while Contador is unbeaten in GTs since 2007. Cancellara is nowhere near as dominant in the cobbled classics, and TTs are that, just stages.
And, with all due respect both for you and Mark, I reckon comparing Cavendish with either of those guys is a bit of a joke. Cavendish has an overwhelming amount of 1 major win. 1. |

Well. I think his dominance in mass sprints (not classics) in the last few years is also a big feat, comparable to the others.
Personally I can't choose between Gilbert and Contador, though Kumazan is right that Contador has been dominating for years and Gilbert only 1,5 years.

Well, I agree that it's a big feat, but it is not comparable to what Gilbert, Contador and Cancellara have done, imo. |

25 Grand Tour stage wins, and 1 GT points jersey mean nothing to you then?

Contador, because he's succeeded solo.
Cav has the best lead out chain in the world
Cance had amazing support in cobbles, and you don't need help in the TT's
OPL were the strongest team this year.

I said major wins. A stage or a secondary classification are not major wins. |

Theres not much more that a sprinter can aim for though, is there? And if you are judging who of the 4 are most impressive, you have to look at it all relatively.
It doesnt take much to go from your apparent opinion, to the idea that Cavendish is not impressive because he never does well in the GC of Grand Tours.

To be perfectly honest, I find the feat of a rider slogging themselves to death (or near death) day after day in service of a team leader, unthanked and unseen far more of an impressive feat than someone who's overpaid, overdrugged (no comments on who) and generally rides their bike like they're a Cunt.
Oops, may have given away who I was beating on there. Nevermind, no one likes Cancellara anyway.

Freire is a sprinter and he has 6 major wins. And a quite important one week race too. I don't think Cavendish has to do well in GC of GTs to compare with those guys, but it'd help if he had won more times in San Remo, for instance.

Those who work for overdrugged riders are usually drugged too. They can't afford the same treatment though.

I always like Gilbert, Contador is very dominating, but if he gets banned it's not that impressive anymore. Cancellara failed this year and I just don't like Cav, so my vote goes to Gilbert |

Ok, but Freire is 35 while Cavendish 26. Freire won his first San Remo at 28, Cav at 23. I think the brit still has a lot of time to improve his palmares. |

When Freire was the age that Cavendish is now, he hadnt won any Milan San Remos. 2 World Championships, sure, but only 1 TDF Stage win, and 2 Vuelta stage wins.
Edit: Beaten to it
For an out of out sprinter, GT stages are the thing to judge, and you really cant fault Cavendish there. What he needs most now though, is a Green jersey.

Voted Cancellara for being the best all-rounder out of the four, but the first three are the best riders of the moment at when they do. |

God I hate those quote pyramids.
That's true. Whenever Cavendish has 3 MSR and 3 WC in his palmares we can repeat this poll. I'd surely vote for Contador again (as I wouldn't have voted for Freire either had he been in this poll), but then I'd find Cavendish inclusion perfectly fair.
A rider who has won 25 GT stages aged 26 is a great rider, no doubt about that. But to be in the same level of riders who have won 6 GTs plus lots of smaller stage races, 4 monuments + a shitload of pretty big races and 3 monuments including an Ardennes triple, he needs to win something bigger. |

Gilbert has been dominating the hilly classics, so he gets my vote! |
