Giro d'Italia 2011 - Week 1
CrueTrue
Preview by Cyclingnews.com

The 2011 Giro d'Italia will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, with a mountainous route that looks set to exalt a possible duel between Vincenzo Nibali and <insert a returned doper's name here>.

Race director Angelo Zomegnan revealed the route in Turin, where the three weeks of racing will begin on Saturday, May 7 with a 21.5km team time trial.

The corsa rosa concludes with a 32.8km individual time trial that finishes in the shadow of the spectacular Milan Duomo on Sunday, May 29.

In between, the 3496km route heads south to Sicily for a mountain finish on the slopes of the Etna volcano and then returns north along the Adriatic coast before a long series of testing stages in the Dolomites and a grand finale on the dirt road climb of the Colle delle Finestre near Sestriere.

Maybe cyclingnews.com know more than we do. Ricco probably has signed with Saxo Bank. They needed a helper for AC and have no problem with dopers in their teamPfft

I wonder what will happen in stage 5 and 6. I don't think they will end in mass sprints, because of the climbs close to the finish, but they aren't hard enough for the GC contenders to attack either. It will be interesting to see what happens there. Maybe something similar to Montalcino last year (not that epic, though).

Montevergine climb will probably end in a sprint between the favourites or a breakaway win. However, I hope that there will be some attacks on the climb. The more action, the better.

Really looking forward to the Giro.

I like Petachi on some of the the hilly stages. He seems better on the climbs and won the queen stage at the TOur of Turkey, But in the flat sprints I think Farrar or Cav will take it.

Cant wait! Both the 3, 5, 6 and 7 stage looks interesting. I think stage 7 will be between the leaders, but there will be no big gaps because of the leaders only watching each other.

Seems like Serge Pauwels has been kicked off Sky's Giro team - in favour of Peter Kennaugh. Pauwels hasnt really done anything at Sky, and that wont help!

2nd GT start then for Kennaugh, having pulled out of the Vuelta early on last year following the death of the soigneur Txema. If he is to be Brailsford's big hope in his over-ambitious Brit winning the Tour target, then he'll certainly learn a lot here!

Montevergine (stage 7) is more or less a bunch sprint between the climbers/puncheurs.

Yep. And according to Pauwels he was promised by the team to ride the giro. So he prepared his whole season towards the giro. You can imagine he's pretty pissed off about it.

I think it's his own fault though. I don't like riders who only do their best in 1 or 2 races per year. And he hasn't got a status, like Andy Schleck, to be able to peak only at 2 races a year, and do nothing the rest of the year.

Still, it's not very nice by Team Sky of course, as they promised something and less than a week before the start of the giro they break their promise.

It's nearly here...you have to love this time of year Smile

Sprinters seem a bit thin on the ground with no Bos, Bennati or Guardini as previously thought, although Chicchi comes in for Bandiera. I'm looking forward to seeing how Blythe and Kennaugh get on.
