After a dismal season, an exodus of sponsors and influx of new backers, California Giant Berry Farms presented by Specialized is looking with optimism at the future.
Given the amount of climbing talent on the team, a leader is all Cal Giant needs to step up the stage racing aspect of our game. To this end, Ruben Plaza, Janez Brajkovic, Vincenzo Nibali, Martijn Keizer and a slurry of free agents will recieve a premium for their services should they chose Cal Giant for the season.
Specialized would like for the team to hire on a TT specialist or two. The aging but evergreen David Zabriskie would fill this gap quite nicely if he could be tempted away from his long time home at Wikipedia. If Zabriskie is unavailable, then there are German, Dutch, Belgian and Aussie options to entertain.
The team will remain small, and our focus will remain on quality over quantity. The wage offers for each rider will be carefully scrutinized. Greedy riders (Brea) will find themselves in free agency faster than the team manager to chocolate.

Upon reviewing the invitations received from race organizers, Cal Giant can say that our riders will be logging a lot of airline miles in the coming year. The team will target most if not all of the North American races, several Asian and African races, a few European stage races and, if the team can pick up a South American climber, most of the Latin American Vueltas.

California Giant Berry Farms Presented by Specialized is proud to present its team ahead of the 2012 season:
Peter Stetina, Tyler Brandt, Ryan Eastman, Ethan Weiss, Alex Howes, Thomas Peterson, Bernardo Colex, Pieter Ghyllebert, Luis Pasamontes, Taylor Tolleson, Jetse Bol, Ben Jaques-Maynes, Tom Zirbel, Juan Jose Haedo, Benoit Sinner, Steven Cozza, Will Frischkorn and, despite a rather high opinion of himself, Filippo Pozzato.
There are only a few spots left on the team, and we have a tidy amount of both transfer monies and salary cap space left, so we hope to sign some quality riders.

Rumours:Sources close to California Giant Berry Farms Presented by Specialized have revealed to the press that the team would consider offers for Italian Superstar Fillipo Pozzato. An underwhelming continental season performance left a bitter taste in the mouths of management, and offers are to be considered. Pozzato's presence on the team has influenced the decisionmaking process for the races Cal Giant will enter in 2012, so trades for a rider with some ability in the hilly races will be considered very thouroughly.
At a wage of 800,000 euro(down from almost a million demanded) Pozzato is not a cheap buy, but he is among the top riders in the world.

California Giant: On the Move
One major target of the transfer season for California Giant was to enlist the services of a top time trialist with the ability to get over the the hills. We are pleased to introduce that rider.
Solvenian Kristjan Koren will lead Cal Giant at many races with an eye on stage wins and the overall. His big target of the season will be a top 5 at Bayern Rundfahrt.
Another new addition is the aging, but still golden, Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez. Acquired in a deal with Festina, which saw Filippo Pozzato leave Cal Giant on loan for the season, Sanchez will lead the squad in the hilly races, such as Philly, MTN and Turkey.
Jetse Bol left Cal Giant to race next season with Puma.
California Giant, is looking to add 2-3 more riders in the next few days. Another stage racing talent is still on our wishlist.

California Giant Announces Early Season Programme
Cal Giant has announced its early season race schedule. Right out of the gate, the team will be racing as defending champions at MTN Cycling Classic. Sammy Sanchez will have his first opportunity to take to the start line in a Cal Giant kit and will race as the team’s leader accompanied by compatriot Luis Pasamontes.
The first stage race the team will tackle is the Venezuelan Vuelta a Tachira. A team leader has yet to be picked, however the mountainous nature of the parcours suggest that it might be up to American climbing talent Peter Stetina. The opening team time trial will be critical to setting the mood for the race, though a top 10 should be realistic.
After Tachira the team will travel south to Argentina for San Luis. This will be the first opportunity for team captain Ryan Eastman to show his stuff. Three mountain stages and a short time trial will be a good test for his legs, though we hope for a good result out of him. Other likely starters are Arnold Jeannesson, Peter Stetina, Taylor Tolleson and Argentine JJ Haedo.
Mallorca is the team’s next stop, where Sanchez and Pasamontes will return to their home countries to challenge for the hilly stages. Mallorca will be part of Sanchez’s prep for his big goal of the season, the Tour of Turkey in April.
March is when our season will begin in earnest. Algarve will be the first real test for Kristjan Koren. He will hope to survive the hills then do well in the time trial. JJ Haedo and Taylor Tolleson may combine for the races flat stages.
California Giant will then make its first trip of the year to Italy for the Strade Bianche classic. Sanchez will again lead the team in this hilly classic.
As Algarve ends, a day after Strade Bianche, Peter Stetina and Co. will start le Tour de Langkawi for the 5th year in succession. With two mountain stages will hope to climb into the top 10 in this HC stage race.
A team target race, the Tour de Boland begins 1 day after the racing starts in Malaysia. Sammy Sanchez and Pasamontes will be our men to watch for this race.
Ryan Eastman will then take to the start in Corsica, hoping to be in the top 10 by the end of the 3 days of racing. Trentino follows several weeks later, and that team is likely to look much the same way as the Corsica squad.

Sammy Sanchez Records First Win of the Year
California Giant's oldest and most experienced rider used his years in the peloton to score a wiley win ahead of one of the peloton's most feared riders. Attacking on the lower slopes of the final hill, then holding on to Valverde after Sanchez was caught on the descent, the Olympic champ took the stage win. He now sits 2nd on GC, and holds the KOM jersey. Success in Mallorca will hopefully bode well for Sanchez's race program, and make the manager appear as if he knows what he is doing.

A Death in the Family
Recently the administrator of the team's media page passed, baby jesus rest his soul. His body was found frozen, standing, arms up, fists in the air. He was known to adopt this pose and shout "I'm INVINCIBLE" and then proceed to call everyone "slugheads." It appears liquid nitrogen tanks, situated behind him in our secret Cuban HQ, broke at an ironic time. Boris will be missed.
With him passed the knowledge of the team's website and password. After months of trying, the word puzzle he left behind was decoded; yielding "Knockers" as the websites password.
A brief update on the season to date; Not good enough.
Moving on. Transfer rumors have been circulating and our new media man, a Mr. Bean, let slip that the plan was to tempt all of "those Japanese people" away from the team of "That Canadian" with massive wages and promises of "many twinkies." Such reports could not be independently verified, but an independent verifi-er confirmed that this press conference was given and that indeed the aforementioned conference was filmed and then youtube-ed.
The team's president is said to have been "not amused," blaming the conference and the subsequent video on a massive Western conspiracy.

Benoit Sinner has finally taken his first win of the season after many, many, many tries. He has been struggling this season, apparently racing with a parachute, and judging by the above picture, a couple extra pounds. "Je n'est pas gros" were his words at the press conference, after a reporter asked Sinner if he thought his weight helped him on this mostly downhill stage. Another journalist asked him why he would periodically duck under the the table cloth, when it was revealed that Sinner had been living up to his name. A box of twinkies was found by his feet, the same box of twinkies that was expected to be used in purchasing Meiji's riders during the transfer window. The team manager is said to have been not amused by Sinner's antics.
The results sheet for the team is completely updated, in post number 4.
