After quite a few failed stories, I decided to invest some good time in making this one ready before I started posting it. It's on PCM07 with the Daily 08DB (cos PCM 09 takes about a week to play a stage). It's with a fantasy team and will hopefully hold as much realism as possible (cya-realism ).

Litespeed Racing Team – a new team for 2008 launches itself from its Lancaster base.
After co-sponsoring Team DFL last year, Litespeed decided that it would get a lot more publicity from sponsoring its own team. It turned out to be a great move as the Pedaltech team (who replaced DFL) crashed and burned. A few sponsors such as Jako and Reynolds jumped ship to the new Litespeed team, who were already assembling their squad under leadership of manager Harry Lodge. Another ex-DFL rider also came across to Litespeed, alongside some riders from the continent and Lodge’s old teams.
The squad looked like this:
Tom Southam, Jonathan Dayus and Hamish Haynes would be team leaders. Southam had returned to the UK after a year in Australia and two with the Barloworld team and would lead the team in stage races with time-trials and some hilly races. Jonathan Dayus has been racing in France, competing successfully in some .2 and smaller races, taking quite a few wins. He is good on all terrain but is starting to get a little old – it will be interesting to see how he adapts to riding in the UK again. Haynes was 2006 British champion and was on the DFL team last year. He has ridden in the Belgian kermesses and can sprint well and go on the cobbles.
Dave Clarke also rode with Endurasport – he can sprint and get over the hills so is a useful asset for the team. Robin Sharman has finished consistently highly in the Premier Calendar, wining in 2005, 2nd in 2006 and 3rd in 2007, as well as riding for Great Britain at the World Road Race Championships. He’s a great all-round rider and has experience with most of the courses this year. Tomas Swift-Metcalfe comes to his homeland from Portugal, having been spotted by the team after winning the Valongo race in 2007. He is a good climber/stage racer and a great talent for the future. Coutts rode with 3 Belgian teams and DFL in 2006 (as well as Lodge’s Endurasport venture) and can lead the team in the mountains (mostly on the continent). Adam Blythe is a youngster with huge potential. He only steps up to the seniors this year after an incredibly successful junior career including two stage wins and the overall classification in the Driededaagse van Axel, the European team pursuit championships (twice) and the UIV Cup. His best talent is the sprints but he also likes the cobbles.
The team will race mostly in the UK, in the Premier Calendar races, the two 1.2 classics, the nationals and the Tour of Britain as well as Ireland’s 1.2 classic, the Shay Elliot, and it’s stage races, the Ras and the Tour of Ireland. They will also participate in some races on the continent, for race fitness and rider development, and US races, because this is another target market for Litespeed.
The team is ready – bring on 2008.
Database info: edited version of Daily 08 db. 15 british races, 3 irish races. All british races have an accurate or relatively accurate profile as does the tour of Ireland (although rsm profiler seems to stretch the stages).
4 british teams (litespeed(fantasy) has replaced barloworld) and 2 irish teams. I am hoping to keep the story as realistic as PCM allows but there will be some artistic license. I also will not bid on British riders from bigger teams unless they are free riders as of October the 15th.
I will be posting race results of foreign races but the most in-depth reports will be from British races. Trying out EXTREME

the problem is with the UK races - they just never seem to play out normally, either making it really easy or difficult. I got it under control by about July

Amgen Tour of California
Litespeed was incredibly pleased with the publicity incurred by participation in America’s premier race. Tom Southam was designated team leader over the tough terrain and two time trials of the stage race but the team’s plans changed after only one rider, and a surprise at that, could stick it on the queen stage.

Not a clue what happened in Stage 3 so we will skip to stage 4 – the queen stage of the race. Hamish Haynes’ ride was a shock as he took over the leadership role when Tom Southam faltered. He came in 47th as the bunch disintegrated over the hills between Modesto and San Jose.

Hamish Haynes was our highest-placed rider in 41st place at 16”20, a pleasing result for him. This race was really just for exposure for the brand and for experience for the riders.

Why they did beats me, as our best rider was 111th. But a tough race against quality continental pros builds good fitness for our next race, Premier Calendar opener the Bikeline 2-Day.

Bikeline 2-Day
The first Premier Calendar race of the year and our debut on British roads is a short stage race around the roads of Hope and Denbigh in North Wales. It consists of a very short prologue time-trial and a short road circuit race based in Hope on the Saturday with a slightly longer, more rolling road circuit race around Denbigh on the Sunday. Our whole 8-man squad is riding – Tom Southam is designated leader, while Hamish Haynes is sprinter and Jon Dayus has a free role.
Stage 1
The race kicked off at 10:00 am with a 2 kilometre race against the clock, through the streets of Hope. Our team had a strong leader in Tom Southam but a prologue this short will favour anyone with power.
The team was going well, as our early riders took provisional leading positions (due to the level of organisation of this race this meant sitting in a plastic garden chair). When Tommy Southam blasted across the line, things were looking good, as he overtook Norwegian National Champion Alexander Kristoff’s time for the lead.
However it was just not to be, as a completely unknown rider, Cypriot Marios Athanasiades, took the win by less than a second. Still, Tom took second and was well-placed for the rest of the race. Our other riders were near the money-places and in contention for a good overall position (bar Adam Blythe).

Stage 2
2:30 pm and the checkered flag was dropped for a few laps around a relatively flat course in Hope. It seemed likely to come down to a sprint finish but there would be some heavy legs after the flat-out sprint of the TT.
The racing was still aggressive and our own Dave Clarke instigated much of it, attacking twice to drag a group clear.
5 were away and working well together, seen here going through Hope for the third time.
However, the bunch was not in a giving mood and they were pulled back with 18 km left. Plowman Craven were tearing it up at the front and we had left it a little late to place our riders, Hamish around 20 places back and Tommy even further.
Come the line and Hamish had dragged himself a bit further forward but not enough to deny a fast moving Peter McDonald from beating Tony Gibb to the win.
Hamish crossed the line in 9th, Tom a further 12 places back. Athanasiades retained the race lead by a second.

Stage 3
Sunday dawned unusually brightly for early-March in Wales and on a slightly tougher 130km course looping round Denbigh, Jon Dayus was raring to go and among the early attacks, managing to pull three others clear.
As you can see though, the team from Cyprus weren’t comfortable with allowing them a big gap and, despite John’s efforts, the leash was kept tight. With 35km left they were swallowed up by the bunch, which was beginning to spit riders out. We set our guys to the front of the race in the hope to drop the yellow jersey and put Tom in with a chance.
And would you look at that; it worked. With Tom in virtual yellow we set about making sure Athanasiades wouldn’t get back on, before the sprinters teams took over in the last few kilometres. They set a high pace and Tom was now alone at the back of the lead group when the sprint commenced.
After pushing for the leaders jersey all weekend, his legs were beginning to pack up and he dropped back in the sprint, struggling to stay in contention.
Thankfully, another rider helped to iron out the gaps and we were sure that Tom had won the GC as Peter McDonald took another stage.

4 of our lads in the top 10 went some way to consoling us and gave us a considerable chunk of points from this race.
We now have a foray into Belgium for the Nokere-Koerse cobbled classic before a true British classic, the Girvan 3-Day.

Girvan 3-Day
This 4 stage race based in the small Scottish seaside town of Girvan is a tougher prospect than the Bikeline was. With no TT for Tom Southam, Jon Dayus is team leader, Hamish Haynes is aiming for the sprints and Alex Coutts will be on the attack in his country’s biggest race.
Stage 1
This is an out-and-back stage from Girvan (and of course back to Girvan). It has a few climbs along the course, but no major obstacles.
Alex Coutts was in the break on an unseasonably nice day for the Girvan.
The peloton pulled them back and we had some riders well positioned for the sprint.
South African Cristoff Van Heerden won the day while our own Hamish Haynes came in 7th.
Rank Name Team Time

8 Tony Gibb Plowman Craven Racing Team s.t.
9 Alexander Kristoff Joker - Bianchi s.t.
10 Ciarán Power Pezula Racing s.t.
Stage 2
The second stage of the opening day is a 26 km criterium around Victory Park.
I could not get the stage to run so it’s simulation resulted in a bunch sprint, Ciaran Power winning.
Rank Name Team Time
1 Ciarán Power Pezula Racing 31'28

8 Michael Cody Jelly Belly Cycling Team s.t.
9 Dean Downing Rapha - Condor - Recycling.co.uk s.t.
10 Christoff Van Heerden Team Konica Minolta - Bizhub s.t.
Stage 3
The third stage begins in Newton Stewart and meanders round Galloway High Forest before finishing in (you guessed it) Girvan.
Alex Coutts was off the front again and instead of hoping for the stage win, he was more pro-active in the break, taking part in the two KOM primes and an intermediate sprint to leave him 2nd in the mountains classification.
It came back for the finish where Steffan Loffler beat the rest of the bunch to the line.
Rank Name Team Time

10 Dean Downing Rapha - Condor - Recycling.co.uk s.t.
Stage 4
The final stage is the toughest, taking in the climbs of the Nick o’ Balloch, the Tairlaw and Hadyard Hill. We hope that Jon Dayus can slip away on the run-in to Girvan while Alex is gunning for the King of the Mountains jersey.
Alex’s relentless attacking on home turf hasn’t gone unnoticed by specialist press such as CyclingWeekly and his attack today got him an interview post-stage. He went away very early this time round.
He joined up with 10 others to make a very large break group which were working well together.
He still had great legs and made a strong attack to take the Balloch hill prime.
He was caught out by a Plowman rider on the second KOM but still managed to take second place.
Alex was on top at Hadyard Hill after the break started to split and took the mountains jersey.
It became apparent that the break would make it and, despite taking the initiative all day, Alex tried to follow Ferdi Van Kuik’s attack and broke clear of the rest of the group.
However, his legs just didn’t have enough in them as Van Kuik took the honours, with Alex in second.
Jon Dayus had tried to attack in the final stretches but failed to make any inroads whatsoever, exactly as the situation on GC.
Alex was our only real performer here and, while the mountains jersey is good, we wanted so much more.

Great start. I like reading about smaller teams. And for some reason I like stories from 07. And your playing extreme mode. |

Tour of the Reservoir
The first Premier Calendar one day is around the Derwent Reservoir near Consett. The course isn’t too difficult but has a couple of small climbs per lap which could split it up.
Tom Southam tried to infiltrate the first break but it was brought back and, as the law seems to be, we abstained from the next break and it stuck.
A huge group got away and were co-operating, leaving us in trouble. We got our team working but the gap didn’t want to come down.
So Jon Dayus attacked off the front with all his might.
But it was to no avail. Dayus was brought back and others attacked, leaving him for dead. Giant Asia took a 1-2 from the break while Dave Clarke was the first finisher for us in 22nd.

In realising that extreme was proving rather impossible, I here switched to hard.
