Making the step up to the ProTour this year is the FBD Éire Tour - and offers a rare opportunity in this division for a stage race to be decided with no influence from time trials. The race is mostly flat, with 2 classified hill stages. Its sprinters versus puncheurs - can the fast men collect enough time bonuses to hold off the latter?

And we have an interesting lineup for this race aswell. Lets start with the sprinters. Danniele Bennati of course stands out, but he has some good competition. Theres double Giro stage winner Mitch Docker, Erik Mohs of the wildcard team Pokerstars - who won the Points jersey in last year race, and then Granjel Cabrera, Lo Cicero, Vanderbiest, Castaneda, Cooke and more. Not forgetting the likes of Bewley and Van Stayen - who could well keep up with the top guys on the hills, as well as in the sprints.
But then look at the team leaders for the race. Liege-Bastogne-Liege winner Frank Schleck heads up the list, looking to continue his resurgence in form. He could face strong competition though - inparticular from Edvald Boasson Hagen, having won Amstel Gold already, who packs a strong sprint. Other strong puncheurs here are Jan Bakelandts, Danilo di Luca, Diego Ulissi, Patrik Sinkewitz and Tejay van Garderen. Last years winner Giovanni Visconti also rides for Starbucks.

A side-note. I realised on Stage 7 that Auber's Dietmar Mehr-Wenige shouldnt actually be here at all - he is racing in the Vuelta, and has won a stage there. As the Vuelta started first, he can keep his points earned there, but will be disqualified from all results of his in this race.

This is a race really hard to predict. A breakaway rider could win it.

If there was another hilly stage, I'd be tempted to say this race was designed for one Franklin Schleck.
Looking at the profile, wouldn't surprise me to see this one fought out by the sprinters like some CT races with similar routes the last few seasons. |

Have decided to bring both Diego Ulissi and Sam Bewley, who are both good at both hills and sprints. One is a good sprinter, and a decent hilly rider, then other is just the opposite. Hopefully that makes me stand a good shot at some stageresults if nothing else.

But even another hilly stage, assuming similar difficulty, wouldnt make it much less of a gamble for Schlecky. He's only here because Uran and Intxausti have grabbed leadership for the team in most of the other shorter stage races. It could play out really well, or he could roll around and come 67th as some sprinter, or some guy with 73 hill, wins.
Still, better to go for the gamble and maybe fail - than not risk it and see someone like Hagen win it easily ahead of the sprinters.

If he does what Gilbert did in Philadelphia, he'll rip the sprinters to pieces. If he doesn't, he'll leave you pulling your hair out. |

The hair allocated to be pulled out over Schleck for this season is already long gone!
The main worry is the uncanny knack for a sprinter to suddenly climb and do well on the hilly stages having won a sprint or 2 and got the race lead. Something like Arashiro in the Tour Down Under in CT this season being one such example - would never have attacked on the hills, but had the race lead from a sprint, so went ahead and even won the hilly stage. (If I remember right)

Happen in the CT last season too with Granjel Cabrera who overperformed tremendously in the hilly stages. Can't remember which race tough.

Had it twice myself this season as well. Bagdonas managed to get in the top 10 of the GC with bonifications and went with the puncheurs on the hilly stage.
Goss won a stage in Tour Med and got the race lead and attacked on the Mont Faron, ending up 5th in the GC.

Decent result there from Danny Summerhill. Pity the game didn't use him as a lead out for Castaneda. |

Absolute carnage there, looks like a very good chance for Frank Schleck.
Just cursed him.

So my now leader for the hilly stage, Mehr-Wenige, is no longer actually being counted in this race. Great. Wonderful. Lovely. |
