Tour of Belgium discussion thread

Following the recent interesting little Olympia Tour and Dutch Food Valley Classic the Benelux region welcomes the continenatal tour's time triallers, many of whom competed in the recently completed Bayerm Rundfaht, for this five stage test in Belgium. This will be run simultanuously to the predicatably hilly Tour of Luxembourg.

Defending champion Hoste is here with a Bbox team that will hope it has turned a corner in Germany after a dismal season. He will no doubt have to put some distance between himself and Ignatiev on the hilly stage four. Indeed there are a whole host of descent time triallers here including Gusev, Clement, Elizen and Craven who might have ambitions of a top place.

For the sprints Vantomme, Van Avermart, Cavendish, Chicchi, Guillen and Bongiorno make a mouthwatering line up for the flat opening three stages.

Hope Chicchi can sprint well in this race and maybe a good result from Wyss on stage 4. Maybe get in a good breakaway with for example Bäckstedt.

Can Ignatiev keep performing as he has been? Who knows. I suspect a crash on one race sooner or later. Which, if that's the case, a top 10 with Hermans will do fine thanks. Pfft

how many race days Ignatiev still have? I think I see him almost everywhere, where my team is participating Grin

Ignatiev has been to (and won) Algarve, 4 Jours de Dunkerque and Bayern. He has still to win (hehe) Belgium, Isle of Man TT, Tour of the Channel Islands, Tour of Missouri and Milano-Torino.

He has also been to Tirreno, MSR, LBL, and will go to Giro di Lombardia.

All 34 race days will be used up Smile

Check the 2010 race results, Ignatiev is good at beating the better puncheurs at Milano-Torino Wink

Well I believe Cornu/Reus did this last year with Jack Wolfskin...

It is a simple formula, find a TT with stat 80+ who can survive hills. Chuck him in all the flattish TT races such as Bayern Rundfaht, Tour of Belgium, Volta a Algarve, six days of Dunkirk and reap the rewards.

Of course persuading someone to give you said TTer is somewhat difficult Smile

To be fair though Algarve and Bayern Rundfaht were likely to suit Ignatiev best considering the length of the TT. Dunkirk was touch and go as is this one as the TT length is not that long. Channel Islands also has a fairly short TT meaning a decent sprinter could out time bonus him. Missouri is going to have a big field and that may well make conditions over the TT course quite variable + harder to control.

Even so Ignatiev surely has to stay on his bike to get at least a top five one has to imagine in these races... though Belgium conditions do have a habit of causing nasty accidents Smile

luckily he will not participate in any of my key races Smile

btw just found out I´ll be already at 2/3 of my season after Belgium Tour

Whereas I'm nearing my half way mark Wink

I can't complain with the points Ignatiev has gotten me so far, so if he gets me any more, even just purely through some TT podiums, I'll be happy enough.

And why do you think I'd send a TT-ing stage racer to a single day race if he hadn't done well? Just like why I sent Hermans to that "pan flat" Dutch race. Which he may or may not have won, I can't remember, but I do know Hermans won one race that was "pan flat". C'est experience, monsieurs.

All of nothing with Vantomme, if he fails. I'm searching someone new next year

My number one target for the next transfer season is a decent TT-er. Then again - that was my target for the last transfer season too.

Because of their guaranteed usefulness the only one's we'll get are from disbanded teams...

Hmm. Hoste could get a good result here.... But I put him here because of the Belgium part of the race... Pfft

And I am shocked that there are no cobble sections in this race...

Exactly as planned...

Chicchi a podium place, that´s good and Wyss in the first group is a +.

Hoste on 12th! In the sprint! Shock

So far so good, but I'm still hoping for a stage win. My men are well placed, can't wait for stage 4 and a GC shake-up.

Markus Eichler second is certainly no "minor placements". That demands at least two pictures of him at the line.
