Getting a bike

Im a self confessed novice when it comes to cycling, been watching the tour for years though and learn more every year.
Ive decided im gonna buy a road bike. I dont intend to race, mainly for fitness and enjoyment, and to see if i can conquer the hill near my town lol
So i can either buy off ebay which fits my budget, or go to the next town over who has 3 bike shops and get all the works n jerks.
Opinions please?
Also i would like to buy some cycling gear, jersey shorts and maybe shoes, whats the best place, and can you make custom jerseys in real life, just like here at pcm lol |

Part 1: New bike, primarily because if you don't know what you are doing, and as you admit, you don't, you can very easily get ripped off on ebay. Tell me your budget and I can give you some bike recommendations.
Part 2: For gear, you can get stuff online for cheap, but check it out in stores first. It feels awkward riding in a jersey or shorts that fit horribly, so try on the clothes (in a riding position) to make sure you have the right size and cut (torso room) of jersey. As for shoes, having the wrong shoes or saddle are the two most uncomfortable thing on the bike, so the same goes there. Tell me your foot width (wide, narrow, normal) and I can give you some reqs there as well. |

Just out of curiosity what is the name of the bike shop you work at Deadpool?
Good news also, my parents are planning to chip in a few hundred for the purchase of my new bike after they learned the hard way my current bike was garbage. |

You guys are so lucky it takes me 45 minutes before I even get to the edge of my city. Plus I live in the prairies so its really flat. |

Hmmm budget, well as im not planning to race i dont need a top of the range thing but i was thinking about $400 Aussie or under. There are bikes around $250 on ebay here, new with Shimano gears. I was gonna measure my in seam and choose the size from there but the last bike i had from a mate gave me a sore neck when leaning over. Footwise im usually 11 or 12 US size with normal foot width.

that depends on what bikeshop you go to!
Near where I live you can go to Sigma Sport and buy a Cervelo for the price of a medium sized family car, or you can pop to one of 15 local bike shops and buy an entirely reasonably priced entry level machine!

My first bike was £300, it wasn't great and didn't get a lot of features, it wasn't a particullarly light frame, the gears were on the frame rather than the handlebars.
Basically it used cheaper material etc. You won't be getting a "light" bike.
But my bike was perfect for my first road bike.

okay thanks doddy, so would i beable to install gears on the bars if i wanted. also is it easy to change pedals say if it came with the straps instead of the click in bits? |

1 - Changing gear location, you're bike might have them on handlebars, otherwise it'll take some cost to move them, but it's do-able. You'd need to look around at the various manufactuers for pricing, Shimano, SRAM etc. It might work out cheaper to buy a bike with them on the bars.

Wrong Doddy, to get a clipless pedal system (the ones that clip in are called clipless, don't ask) is at least a $150 investment, plus pedals don't come off with a multi-tool, they come off with a pedal wrench. Also, I can guarantee that it'll be cheaper to buy a bike w/ integrated brake/shift levers than it will be to upgrade to them.
As for shoes, if you have normal width feet I can't really recommend a shoe. Just try a lot on and find one that fits you, but unlike wide or narrow feet there isn't a specific brand that is great for it.
And as a baseline for a bike I wouldn't look at a worse one than the Trek 1.1:

It's $656.99 in the US, w/ a full aluminum frame and fork, Shimano 2300, and everything else is Bontrager (Trek's in house company). Anything worse than that is going to be a piece of shit.

If you are able to wait until after the end of the season, once the 2011 frames come out, you'll be able to pick up a real bargain - I did that early in 2009, and got a 35% discount on a 2008 model!  |

I would go to a bike shop and have a look what they have, they should be able to take some measurements to get the best bike for you, because especially if you have some problems with your back, it will getting worse if you have a bike that doesn't fit 100% to you

went to a bike store today, was the largest one in the town i went too. bascially the lowest price road bike they have is $899, its a malvern star and doesnt come with pedals so looking at about $1000 for a bike. i talked to the guy and he was helpful explaining all the differences and why bike x is better than bike y.
basically im not prepared to pay $1000 bux for a bike thats gonna be for riding to work, riding around town and a bit of fitness, but not racing.
so im back to looking at ebay, is it safe to use the self tests in regards to measuring which bike frame size i need? if i were to list some measurements here is there anyone that could recommend a bike size and brand?
