Looks like Landis really did shake the hornet's nest. Personally I hope nothing comes of this. I mean we all know Lance took drugs. But if he gets crucified for it American cycling will never be the same and American potential and current sponsors will be reluctant to sponsor cycling. Cycling as a whole will be fine but may be for American cycling ripping the band aid quickly will be a little less painful in the long run. |

Despite some hard times after the Festina affair, and even if many things remain far from perfect, I'm glad it happened.
So, I also hope Bruyneel, Armstrong and their team, will be ripped apart.
Still, I'm a bit gutted that this story has to come out just the day the TDF starts. Like there wasn't enough time before or after. Now we'll talk probably hear and read more about it than actual sport. Meh... |

My Lance Armstrong prediction? Either he will not start or he will pull out just before the race enters France. I have a feeling that the world of cycling is about to change for the better.

Imo it's a bit much to release an article that is apparently based on what Landis is saying right at the start of the Tour. How many new things could he offer to what he said back in May? Probably not much. I see it being the same thing again with Landis throwing accusations with zero proof and Lance & co denying them. I don't think the organizers of the Tour can or will do anything about it if it is indeed just Landis saying incriminating things.
Although of course some or all of the accusations may be true, I think this is only going to take attention away from the actual Tour and again onto the not so bright things. I hope the next thing I hear about the LA's doping practices are the results of the actual investigation they are doing and not anything that Floyd Landis is saying. Even if he is telling 100 % the truth, I can't give the guy any credit for anything after the things he did himself. |

Well, it kinda does matter about the effects. It is easy for you to sit across the pond and shout "hang him, hang him!". But as an American racing NRC races and for the u23 Team I have to be worried about what will people on the outside of cycling look at American cyclists. The U23 national team is struggling with money, they cut the roster in half and backed out on many races. IF the Lance scandal unfolds who would want to throw money at a bunch of "dopers" no matter how talented or clean they might be? This scandal will go much further than Lance btw, it will go all the way to USA Cycling federation, Steve Johnson and other higher-ups which could potentially see the end of it all. Not saying it will happen but the potential is certainly there if the scandal does unfold. What will happen to teams like HTC-Columbia and their newly added sponsors? Garmin-Transitions? Every doping case after Lance's will be blown up in the media. Hell, even Baseball mentions positive tests now and carries out suspensions before Barry Bonds and BALCO no one never even knew Baseball players were drug tested and especially those who tested positive. Potentially Radioshack will have one of the greatest blunders in sports. They are a struggling company in the electronics market and took a gamble on Lance and his team now their stock has increased since sponsoring Lance but what credibility will Radioshack have afterwards? Sure some of you will point out European sponsors have profited from these scandals or at least survived (i.e. Festina) but Americans will look at this differently they will see Lance Armstrong "the icon of cycling" as a fraud and will look at all other cyclists the same. Of course just hypothetical and generalizing here so dont flip out  I am not worried about Europe as they are the old dogs there will always be those willing to throw money at cycling over there. Like Aquarius said it happened in France back in 1998 but it survived and I hope for American cycling it survives too. |

Cycling in the US [or any other country] will always survive. Bank on it. This isn't anywhere near close to being big enough to bring it down.
It will however have all the effects you listed, but to a smaller scale.
It comes down to this: do you prefer a cycling where everyone is in denial, where most pros are on drugs and where the cheaters get rich and get away with it....
.....or do you prefer a sport with a slightly lower reputation at the eyes of the general public, slightly less funding, but that is slowly cleaning itself, where long term, clean riders will actually have a chance of winning without having to be generational talents?
