Technically speaking, it is possible: Cassani showed the bike and i don't think that there were many controls over the bikes before this whole story came out.
Cancellara's performance is somewhat suspicious, especially in PR when he goes away so easly while pedaling like i do when i go to the office in the morning, and in Ronde where he ascended Muur in 20% less time than every competitors over the last 3 years.
Still it's damn hard to believe, Cancellara is a world-class rider (and has a world-class wage), why should he risk to get caught for such a shameful guilt?

All he did was well within realistic grounds of what he is capable to do. He produced 1400 watts up the Muur and someone calculated that he used 1200 watts to ride away from the favourites in Paris - Roubaix.
- The motor wouldn't fit into a standard Specialized
- It wouldn't provide enough power required from a pro cyclist in a race like this. In Cassani's presentation it doesn't have any resistence.
- There is no evidence of a switch on Cancellara's bike
- The noise would be too loud
Cancellara just avoided accidents in the winter and hit his peak at the perfect time.
As the worlds best time trialist Cancellara has always prefered to stay seated as much as possible. Remember his attack in the Tour 07 when he defended his yellow jersey?
Can we please put this thing to rest?

It can have it's own thread, it's a big enough story.

Can we please put this thing to rest? Why wouldn't the motor fit in ? There's probably more than one prototype of such engines, I can well imagine one that'd fit in.
If Cancellara actually did 1200 or 1400 W at those times of the race, no matter what it's not all coming from the engine. But add him 100 or 200 extra Watts, given he's already one of the very best riders in such races, and he becomes a total freak. Erm, that's just what he was on those races...
As for the noise, you wouldn't necessarily hear it. Bikes are noisy enough, plus the crowd, plus the fact there's air moving all around cyclists when they're riding. I can imagine a small, powerful and rather silent engine. Why not after all ?
Now I don't really have an opinion about whether or not Cancellara used such a thing. It's largely possible IMO, but I won't say it's likely (or unlikely). |

They couldn't build a smaller motor than the one used in the video without sacrificing power. That requires an inside diameter of 31,6 mm of the seatpost. Specialized uses 27,2 mm.
The motor in the video made a lot of noise and since there was no spectators around when he attacked in Paris - Roubaix it would mean that his opponents would have heard it.
What he did at both of those races wasn't superhuman. There have been riders who have done far more impressive things. Boonen wasted a lot of energy by using way too heavy gears up the Muur and in Paris - Roubaix, Boonen was again the only one who chased.
And lets not forget the fact that his "wierd" handmovements on his handlebars are just gear changes

Weight control isn't enough since they can easily make the bike 7 kg with the motor. Some teams have to put lead weights into the BB to keep the weight legal.
They could have a look at the handlebars to see if there is something peculiar about the setup or they could just do a x-ray on the bikes. This would probably be the most effective. Although they wouldn't catch anyone because no one is so stupid, they would at least scare them away.
I doubt that there is any pro rider using a motor on his bike. Lets not forget that there are still doping procedures available that has a much smaller chance of getting caught than sticking a motor into your bike. |

I have to ask again. Why are we even discussing this piece of crap video from youtube? It is a video made up of Davide Cassanis report about mechanized bikes, then some video from the website of the motor manufacturer, Gruber Antrieb (conviniently with the part about the giant batterypack left out by the way) and then grainy footage with red arrows on it.
FFS it is about as credible theories about mossad causing 911, the moonlanding never happended or that Elvis is still alive.
Discuss whether or not Cancellara is clean by all means. But this is just stupid.

To just put through how serious this is:
Cassani has already said he knows pros who have successfully used it recently.
The preceding post is ISSO 9001 certified
