Gilbert will be presented with an unofficial world calendar jersey at the end of todays Romandie stage.
Lotto will present the jersey after the team and serveral other UCI Pro Tour teams begin pushing for it to be made official.
The UCI responds that it will be discussed at the next UCI PT council meeting in Birmingham in June.

Frei explains why he doped, which, unsurprisingly, is how most of us know/suspect things are in cycling.

Today or tomorrow a "top italian rider destined to star at the Giro" will be revealed to have been caught in the biological passport. He'll be among the names of a few more riders, also revealed at the same time.
McQuaid promised this back in March. Now we wait for the announcement. The riders had time to prepare their defense and explanation of their blood values. Now, the UCI, having not bought the explanations, will announce the names.
Also, Marinangeli of LPR tested positive for Thiazide last December

Not too many of those about and if top really means top would be from 1 of 2 in my opinion, both of which I'd be surprised by.
If top is defined a bit more broadly, then there are quite a few others to choose from and I know who my money would be on.
EDIT - Gotta love the UCI too - saving up their big announcements 'til just before the start of a GT every year.

Anyway, as for the high profile guy, my money's on a non-GC contender. Ballan, Petacchi, Bennati. Notice they don't say a favourite to win the Giro. They say a high profile italian who could star in the Giro.
I'd say Ballan. Santambrogio was cleared today....but not Ballan. That's a major hint right there.
EDIT: Also, notice how around the time of the original announcement, Ballan's performance dropped MASSIVELY

Main thing against Ballan though is he's not destined to star at the Giro. He's not even down to ride the way things stand.
Though I agree, the signs point that way. |

It will be interesting to see. Can we bet on it?
I'm guessing a sprinter, or even just a stage winner from last year can be called a star?

With the starring role thing, I'd tend to agree with issoisso and lean towards an asthmatic non-GC guy. |

Hope it's not Basso/Pellizotti, that would be a major blow. |

"a Russian, two Spaniards, a Slovenian and probably two Italians"
My brain says: bye bye Spilak.
EDIT:The irregular blood values of the guy "who goes to the Giro with ambitions" are from the 2009 Tour. heh.
Pellizotti?

Where do you get your information from? Is it a serious one?
I`m wondering who the Russian could be. There where a lot of news about Menchov but i can`t imagine he is the one.
I guess for Ivanov or an unknown one.
And probably you are right. Spilaks 2nd place was quite surprising. |

Pellizotti?
Or Ballan, Pozzato, Bennati

But still, while it remains more rumours than actual announcements, im sceptical anything will happen

If I didn't feel I could trust it, I'd post "X says that...." or "rumour is that...:" instead of posting it as fact
It's from Tuttobiciweb. Every time there's a doping case involving italians, they break the news way before anyone else.

I'd actually smile if it was Pozzato. It's nearly impossible not to hate the pretentious asshat.

Just thought the same when i saw his picture on Tuttobiciweb. But there are quite a lot riders (Menchov, Karpets, Ivanov, Bole, Spilak, Brajkovic, Golcer, Valjavec, Bozic, Pozzato, Ballan, Bruseghin, Bennati....+100more)
Maybe all the names are wrong and there is just on guy with ambitions and rest are unknown helpers of small teams.
Let`s wait for the official names. |
