Rumours are spreading across the world of cycling today that the former-World Champion Franco Pellizotti is set to walk out of the Vesuvio-Accumalux team following disagreements over a contract price in a potential renewal.
The ageing Italian refused to deny reports that he had made the grand demands of a 900,000+ salary, instead indicating that he is 'worth every penny'. And the results cannot lie, having taken 2nd in the 2010 Giro, an improvement on 3rd the previous year - and of course, being victorious in the 2009 World Championship.
But Vesuvio-Accumalux have made no secret of their desire to sell Pellizotti - could it be that this split arrives sooner than expected?
A group of Vesuvio-Accumalux riders, including Benat Intxausti, Santiago Perez Fernandez and Mwangi Samwel, recently took our new jersey out for a test ride. Although the rest of the equipment has yet to be updated, the striking jersey was clear to see - and promises to be a distinctive feature of the peloton this season.
We hope it will be just one factor to help us challenge La Gazzetta dello Sport this year
Vesuvio-Accumalux are pleased to announce the 25 riders who will be associated with the team this year. This includes 15 permanent riders, 2 riders who have been loaned out, and 8 riders who have been loaned in. The team will be presented in detail soon.
We head into the season with 3 main team leaders, Frank Schleck, Beñat Intxausti and Rigoberto Úran. The three have only ever ridden in the same race once - the 2010 Vuelta a Asturias - and potentially may not ride together at all this year, as they each target a specific schedule aimed at achieving a better 2011 than 2010.
Major victories:
Tour de France 2008
ProTour Individual Rankings 2009
Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2010
Frank continues to be the leading rider on our team, and now heading into his 5th year in the squad, is the only remaining rider from our 2007 ProTour winning squad. Last season he had a supreme Ardennes classics, 2 firsts and a 2nd, and would love to repeat that again this year - while also looking for his first ever Giro di Lombardia win. The former Tour de France winner has yet to decide whether to return to Grand Tours this year, as he has plenty of races to choose from. The defending Paris-Nice champion also hasnt ridden Tirreno-Adriatico since winning it, while he has enjoyed riding the Tour de Suisse for the past two seasons.
Best performances:
2nd, Vuelta a Espana 2010
3rd, Dauphine Libere 2010
5th, Tour de France 2010
Now established as one of Spain's best Grand Tour riders, Beñat Intxausti has developed well in the 3 years since joining our team - and can claim the exclusibity last season of being the only rider to finish in the Top 5 of two Grand Tours. This year there is little point hiding that his one and only target of the season is the Vuelta a Espana, looking to improve upon last year. But also of importance for Beñat is that elusive stage race victory. Competition is tough, but he would love to finally become a winner - having not even taken a stage win in 2010.

Interestingly, Úran's best results to date have all come in Spain - but with Intxausti alongside him on the team, this year should bring some fresh new challenges as he joins us as the year's major signing - our first major signing for 2 years. Úran made his ProTour debut back in 2007, but was hopelessly underused, so switched to the Continental tour and the Tinkoff team. He showed promise in the Vuelta a Colombia with 5th, and followed that up with 6th the year after - much more impressive given that he, and the race, were now both in the ProTour. His Grand Tour debut was very shortlived, crashing out on Stage 5, but he made amends last year by taking 5th place in the Vuelta. 2010 also saw him take a strong victory in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya - in a field which included Andy Schleck.
A very capable rider, Maxim Iglinski proves invaluable support to our leaders whenever he rides - showing last year his capability to make the Top 20 in ProTour stage races despite his main function being to help the leader. He also has the freedom to ride for himself at times, last year it heralded a 13th place in the Tour of Romandie, and he will get that chance again outside of supporting Schleck in the hills, and all 3 of our leaders in the mountains.

The Russian pure climber joins us after 3 years at the Sony Ericsson team, alternating between the Continental and ProTour divisions. When in the ProTour in 2008, all he could manage was a couple of Top 50s in GC, aswell as a 68th place in his debut Grand Tour. This year he is likely to ride in at least 2 Grand Tours, and its not the GC that matters, but the support he can offer.
João Cabreira
2010: Accumalux-Huez
2009: LA/MSS/Pearl Jam
Best performances:
29th, Tour de Suisse 2010
41st, Tour de France 2010
42nd, Vuelta a Espana 2010
Another strong asset in our support team, Cabreira is expected once again to ride in 2 Grand Tours in a racing calendar that will be entirely devoted towards the mountains.
Best Performances:
17th, Tour of Romandie 2010
Giro d'Italia: 28th (2009), 42nd (2010)
Tour de France: 36th (2010), 39th (2009)
Vuelta a Espana: 38th (2010)
Matea Kvasina has ridden 5 of the last 6 Grand Tours, and has been a solid performer on each and every occasion, doing his job well in supporting the team. He even managed to crack a ProTour Top 20 last year in Romandie.

A key aspect in the ProTour are the timetrialists. Not only are there plenty of opportunities in individual stages - although victory can tend to be exclusively reserved to Zabriskie, Rogers or Cancellara and the like - but TTTs can be a critical part of Stage races, as well of course as Eindhoven. Time trials in the team are not as high a priority now as in 2009 when we had both Millar and Cancellara amongst others, but still we have a good lineup to present.
Marcel Kittel
2010: Accumalux-Huez
2009: Accumalux-Formex
2008: Discovery Channel Marco Polo
Best individual performances:
1st, U23 World TT Championships 2010
5th, Tour of California 2010, Stage 1
Chrono des Herbiers: 12th (2010)
Marcel Kittel is better than ever this season, and despite offers of over 400,000 for him in the transfer season, he remains with us as he looks to earn more consistent Top 10 placings in individual time trials. Spurred on by a fabulous victory in the U23 World Championships, the German will hopefully be someone to look out for.
Michael Ford
2010: La Gazzetta dello Sport
2009: La Gazzetta dello Sport
2008: La Gazzetta dello Sport
Best individual performances:
1st, Tour of Northern Europe 2010, Stage 2
5th, World TT Championships 2010
Chrono des Herbiers: 5th (2010), 12th (2009)
After 3 years at La Gazzetta dello Sport, Michael Ford really hit a career best form at the back end of 2010. Not only with 5th place in each of the 2 big elite time trials of the season, but also by a surprise victory in a time trial stage at the Tour of the Northern Europe. Road races may not be his thing, but time trials certainly are, and we jumped at the chance to sign him up this year.
Best individual performances:
8th, Tour of Northern Europe 2010, Stage 2
11th, Tour of Qatar 2009
Chrono des Herbiers: 17th (2010)
Now in his 4th year with his, Barth may not have the necessary skills to be Top 10ing in many individual time trials, but he is a strong member of our TTT team.
Best individual performances:
5th, Tour of Qatar 2009
Luxembourg TT Championships: 2nd (2010), 3rd (2009), 6th (2008)
Another part of our TTT squad, he knows that the main reason he rides races will be if there is a TTT there. His cycling dream is to win the Luxembourg TT Championships, and has improved over the year there - although a win still seems unlikely.
As a Luxembourg based squad, we always look to incorporate a core selection of Luxembourg riders in our team. 2 have already been introduced, and here are the other 4. All being born in 1987, they are good friends, but there will be plenty of internal rivalry.
Ben Gastauer
2010: Nokia-Nike (On loan from us)
Best performances:
14th, Etoile de Besseges
KoM, Mount Hood Cycling Classic
The promising young puncheur made his professional debut for a continental team last year, but he was owned by us, and this year will debut in ProTour races. He will have a busy schedule, but no Grand Tours this year.
Sebastian Einsle
2010: Accumalux-Huez
Best performance:
64th, Japan Cup
Sebastien is another promising rider in the hills, and is looking forward to riding his first Grand Tour this season. Last year was a steep learning curve, and he is hoping to make improvements this year.
David Claerebout
2010: Accumalux-Huez
Best performance:
79th, Int. Osterriech Rundfahrt
It is hoped that he can become another part of our climbing support team in future, and like Einsle, endured a testing season of learning the ropes last year. He did start the Giro, but was one of many not to finish the attritional course, and so his major goal this year is to finish a Grand Tour.
Nico Schinker
2009: France Televisions B
2008: Accumalux
Best performance:
6th, Tour du Faso 2009, Stage 4
Nico is very excited to have received another chance with Accumalux this season. 2008 was marred by injury and a struggle to be selected, as we could only give him a ride in Gent-Wevelgem, Vattenfalls, Paris-Tours and Tour de Pologne. 2009 was a better year in his development, for he rode across the world for the B team of France Televisions - Australia, Britain, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Germany and Sweden. Unable to find a team last year, he will now be desperate to impress.

This season we have 8 riders on loan from other teams. Many are still inexperienced, but all still bring something to the team - they need to, or else we would not have loaned them.
Amadou Bakari
On loan from Auber 93 - Look
2010: Nokia-Nike
2009: Gatorade
Best performances:
10th, E3 Prijs 2010
17th, GP Herning
29th, Tour of Northern Europe 2010, Stage 4
The status of our cobbles leader doesnt tend to mean much in this team - certainly not since Cancellara left - but it will be interesting to see how Bakari can do with a good cobbles stat, but nothing else.
Teodoro Costagli
On loan from Wiggle - San Pellegrino
2010: Wiggle Pro Cycling
2008: Benfica
We are sponsored by an Italian volcano, and so here is the token Italian rider. On loan from Wiggle, Costagli will ride the Giro for the 2nd time in his career.
Thomas Faiers
On loan from Pendleton's Twicer
Faiers makes his management game professional debut this year. He could well be one to watch in future stage races - but it may not suit his development to ride a Grand Tour this year.
Denis Galimzyanov
On loan from Tinkoff Credit Systems - Rosneft
Another rider making his debut, the Russian sprinter looking to gain in skill before returning to CT next year and be a better rider for his Russian team
Jan Hopman
On loan from Auber 93 - Look
2010: Virgin Media
2008: Wiesenhof-Felt
Another sprinter on loan - neither Hopman or Galimzyanov are particularly expected to feature in bunch sprints - the target is more likely to be breakaways, with any luck.
Ciaran Kelly
On loan from Vespa-Caffrey's
2010: Vespa-Caffrey's
Best performance:
40th, Nokere-Koerse 2010
The Irishman is a decent enough climber, but looks set to take a more domestique-type role this season as he looks to gain in experience.
Pedro Merino Criado
On loan from Santander
2010: Santander
Best performance:
24th, Grand Prix d'Isbergues 2010
The Spaniard will hopefully become a useful breakaway rider this season, decent on the hills, and then a good enough sprint to be of impact if the break can make it to the finish.
Juan Carlos Rienda Segura
On loan from Santander
2010: Santander
Best performance:
45th, Vuelta a Burgos 2010
A Vuelta start is a possibility for Rienda, who is another pure climber. Potentially also suited to breakaways, like his loaned out Santander teammate.
Elsewhere
Mwangi Samwel
Loaned to Bimbo Nutella
2010: Accumalux-Huez
Best performances:
23rd, Giro di Lombardia 2010
31st, Tour de Suisse 2010
40th, Tour de France 2010
So long as Intxausti is unable to be beaten at least at some point in the season, Ill be happy - Im not even sure if he has ever won a race yet (excluding TTTs) - I dont recall any stage wins

23 year old Luxembourg rider Ben Gastauer has declared his eagerness for the season to begin, as he prepares for the biggest challenge of his career. A gentle introduction last season in his neo-pro year saw him only ride 34 race days - and this year that has more than tripled - with Gastauer being the most raced rider in our team. It is too early for him to ride the Grand Tours, but he will gain valuable experience as he rides 25 of the seasons 35 ProTour races. Many of these races will be ridden alongside Frank Schleck, and Gastauer is particularly looking forward to aiding his fellow countryman in the hills of important races such as Liege, Lombardia, Amstel Gold, Fleche Wallone and of course, the Classique du Grand-Duche.
Those 5 races will also see the start of a great friendly rivalry this season within the team between Gastauer and fellow 23 year old Luxembourger Sebastian Einsle. As will as hoping to regularly break the Top 100 in race this year, Einsle is eagerly awaiting his first Grand Tour ride - Le Tour.
The 2 other 23 year old Luxembourg riders in the team are David Claerebout and Nico Schinker. Claerebout is hoping to finish a Grand Tour for the first time - and there is nothing bigger than the Tour de France - as his development continues. Schinker meanwhile will ride a number of stage races in the hope of finding a successful breakaway on the flatter stages. He has a real opportunity with many race days given to him, and this includes a ride at the Vuelta.
The team's other rider from Luxembourg, the little known Frank Schleck, remains tight lipped on his season plans - and intends only to reveal his intentions while Marcel Kittel, Michael Ford, Jan Hopman and co lead our team in Qatar.
