I thought it would be interesting if people talked about their own cycling "careers". I know Smoothie is quite good, and bencurfs knows every single ProTour rider as he's that good, but it would just be nice to hear from others (and from the 2 above ).
Me, well I'm not a cyclist. I only got into cycling last year, and don't even have a bike (lack of funds ). What I am though, is a runner, which I enjoy quite a lot, although my small lung capacity means I can never be good. However, I've run for Essex, my county in X-country, and am starting to improve rapidly, although I'm always ill or injured.
My coach is one of the best in the country, who's produced 2 long distance young talents - 1 has been the best in the country at every single age group since he was about 11, and the other has just come 8th in the European Junior Olympics, 2 years to young, in 40 degree heat - and I train with them

Nice... Well I tend to be the "all-round"-sort-of-fella. Guess I don't have the necessary talent - and my interest for cycling started too late. I don't think I could train seven hours a day either, and cycling requieres full commitment if anything.
I do play soccer three times a week, however. In the Danish "Serie 2" which is the ... 7th best league (a bit hard to explain really) in the country. |

i thought we already had a thread kind of like this, oh well
i am a fairly good, obviously probably not as good as Smoothie, but i get round and over the hills/mountains fairly easily. i have a proper road bike although it is unthinkably old, Freire won the WC on it in '99
i have yet to be bothered to join a club, i think i should but i don't want it to bother my football, which i love doing, training on Wednesdays and matches on Sundays.
about the running i was a fairly good runner also, i ran for Yorkshire, i used to do the Junior Great north run from ages 5-10, i did my best time at the age of 6, 21 mins if i remember, not exactly a blistering pace but i was only 6
i ran for Yorkshire when i was 12 but i hadn't ran for a few years so, i came 51st out of 160 in the whole country, and 3rd from my school. I qualified to run for Yorkshire by coming 3rd in our school cross-country, only got beat by like 2 awesome runners, the ones that beat me when i ran for Yorkshire
but you seem much better so i will shut up

I also like to front run in running - slipstreaming doesn't have that great an effect in running, but it's easier to stay with someone than run alone, and I like to pace set

i try to pace set but, Byram (my mate) is like the best in the world at pace setting (slight exaggeration)
honestly though, when we do track events like the 1500M (his speciality) he goes straight off the front and by the time he has finished he has lapped everyone, and i mean everyone
so i do my best but there are so many good runners at my school

I have a used road bike for 3 or 4 years. The bike should be a bit bigger for me, but that's what I have. I've made lots of rides with it when I got it, but nowadays I just ride it VERY occasionally.
What I like about riding my bike? Not much effort, and for me that means, flat rides and flat and descent sprints. I hate climbing because I'm a little bit too heavy and it gets me tired quickly.
I'd like to join a club where I wouldn't feel too embarassed about my lack of cycling skills and have some great coach set me up some training plans, like Chris Carmichael. Ehehe... |

I like to cycle and run and I used to play football but I quit because my team consisted of a whole lot of idiots (including our coach)
I was in several school teams in Kenya(x-country,hockey,football,athletics), but since I live here I haven't been doing much because there aren't any school teams here...

I just love to put an infernal pace in the front of the peloton. In the end of the school year, we have here in my school a kind of stage where we talk and ride, just to fun. But I didn't resist and in the climb (600m at 10% that I make every day to my house in the top, that I just like to call My Cauberg) I just managed to accelerate and just one mate went with me...

just to say Marco, that hill isn't worth bragging about
but i too love to put the pace on the pack, it makes it more interesting than just sitting in wheels all the time
but we never cycle at our school aslike a group, we cycle to school but not on racing bikes, i go on my BMX. no one is even slightly interested in cycling at my school
but then we just talk about and play football, so it's much better

We were on mountain bikes too...the school doesn't have money to race bikes, and I don't have money for one too...
The most I can do is to borrow one from a friend of my father, who knows important riders from my country and the team managers from Benfica and LA-MSS.
