The team is based on the last lineup of Discovery from 2007, complemented with some future RadioShack riders. A few big names are missing from the '07 team: Contador, Devolder and Davis. Lance Armstrong has of course returned, together with some old US Postal domestiques.

14.02.2009: Amgen Tour of California

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/amgen_tour_of_california_20.jpg

We started the 2009 season with a third place finish for Uros Murn in the Grand Prix Cycliste La Marseillaise, before Levi Leipheimer won a stage and came second in the GC in the Vuelta a Mallorca. Those races worked as preparation for the season's first big happening, namely the Amgen Tour of California.

We aim high, and field Levi Leipheimer as our leader for the GC. Levi's in good shape, and as the strong time trialist he is, he hopes to put the nail in the other contender's coffin on the 24km long stage seven time trial. Tour of California doesn't offer many other difficulties, as the few hills in the race are not very selective.

Other riders fighting for the GC are Cunego, Kreuziger, Gesink, Kirchen, Cancellara, Ivanov and Fränk Schleck. Hotly tipped for the many flat stages are Bennati, Pozzato and McEwen. It seems Katusha have brought their entire A-team for the sprints. In addition to Pozzato and McEwen, they also bring Steegmans and Napolitano. Our sprinter, Uros Murn, is going to have a hard time, especially since the rest of our team is focused on helping Levi. For a lot of our rivals, though, this is their first race of the season, so Levi's participation in Vuelta a Mallorca can have given us a slight advantage.

Some stories lack promise from the off, and others just stand out a mile from the rest. Yours, I'm glad to say, falls into the latter category. I'm happy that you decided to share it with us. I look forward to enjoying the read.

Glad you like it so far. First stage coming up very soon, just have to translate it to english first.

I'm using .png for the screenshots, but they are mostly below 200kb, so I don't think that will be a problem.

14.02.2009: Amgen Tour of California

Stage 1
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/profil1.png
Sacramento: 5.4km

Tactics meeting
Today's prologue doesn't serve any purpose other than starting the Tour of California, and it probably won't make any difference in the final GC. Levi Leipheimer is one of the favorites for this stage though, so he will really give it a go.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/1-1.png
Another favourite was Fabian Cancellara, who started early and set a best time which lasted very long.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/1-2.png
In fact, it lasted the whole day. Home favourite Levi Leipheimer rode a good prologue, but unfortunately he came in eight seconds behind Cancellara.

Stage 2
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/profil2.png
Davis - Santa Rosa: 173.5km

Tactics meeting
The first proper stage in California is not a stage where we can have much hope of success. The plan is to sit comfortably in the peloton and use as little energy as possible. Tomorrow's stage is quite hilly, and our guys should keep themselves fresh until then.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/2-1.png
As usual there was a breakaway, but it didn't contain any Discovery riders, and no other riders worthy of a mention either, to be honest.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/2-2.png
The peloton wasn't in a hurry to catch the leaders, but with 5km to go they were eventually reeled in. Nice timing by the sprint teams.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/2-3.png
The stage finish was not very exciting. Frenchman Anthony Geslin was totally superior, and dominated the sprint. No changes in the top 10 of the GC.

Stage 3
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/profil3.png
Sausalito - Santa Cruz: 187km

Tactics meeting
With Leipheimer being the best time trialist in the race after Cancellara, the plan today is to avoid losing time to any of the other contenders. Maybe we also will try an attack, depending on how Levi is feeling. The last climb of the day will probably decide who wins the stage.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-1.png
Ivan Rovny got into the breakaway, which apart from the russian consisted of Albasini and Botcharov. The three riders held a solid lead going over the first climb.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-2.png
Rovny&co was caught just before the top of the last hill. Then it was the favourites turn to run the show. Boom, Pozzato, Aerts and F.Schleck attacked. Would Leipheimer answer?

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-3.png
He would, and he was joined by Popovych. A favourite group which held a lead of one minute over the peloton was formed. It contained Gesink, Kirchen, Cunego and Schleck, among others.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-4.png
Popovych had really good legs today, and in the little hill disrupting the descent towards the finish, he attacked!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-5.png
He rapidly gained half a minute on the rest of the breakaway, and when he was closing in on the finish line, it looked like it would be his big day!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/3-6.png
Leipheimer crossed the line with the other favourites, and in the distance he could see Popovych claim the stage win and the leader's jersey as well.

Stage 4

Just like the day before, today's stage ended in a mass sprint. Geslin was the strongest. Second California stage win for the frenchman.

The goals of my leaders are in the team presentation. I'll only be sending Brajkovic to the Giro. The A-team will set the Tour on fire, while my spanish riders will help Levi in the Vuelta.

Stage 6
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/profil6.png
Visalia - Paso Robles: 216.5km

Tactics meeting
Another boring flat stage, where we just have to control the pace of the peloton and make sure we keep Popovych's yellow jersey.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/6-1.png
The break of the day was quite large, and at one point they had a ten minute lead.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/6-2.png
Today something actually happened. With 25km left to race, the peloton started breaking up. Probably because of a combination of high tempo and unfit riders having just started their season, as there was no wind. McEwen, Kreuziger and our own rider Landis got caught in one of the groups left behind.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/6-3.png
Eight kilometers before the finish, the size of the peloton had decreased drastically, but all the top ten GC riders were still hanging on.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/6-4.png
The remaining sprinters apparently had enough power left for the sprint, and they got a little gap back to the peloton during the last kilometer.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/6-5.png
In a really tight finish, Bennati beat Pozzato by a few centimeters.

Stage 7
i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/profil7.png
Solvang: 24.5km

Tactics meeting
Today's the big day. It's once again time for some changes in the GC. Popovych's stage win the other day has given us a bit of a luxury problem, as having two captains could backfire. Today though, both our GC contenders have been allowed to ride as fast as they can, then we will decide afterwards who we're going to ride for during the last two stages.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/7-1.png
Jason McCartney rode a great time trial, and set the best time so far.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/7-2.png
One man beating McCartney was the German veteran Jens Voigt. The Saxobank rider eventually ended up in fourth place.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/7-3.png
The time trial God Cancellara was going to be a hard nut to crack today as well. At the finish, he annihilated Voigts time, beating his teammate by 53 seconds. It looked like our two victory candidates Popovych and Leipheier were going to struggle.

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/7-4.png
Levi set out in his familiar aerodynamic style, but at the intermediate time check he was 20 seconds behind Cancellara. He didn't give up though, and increased his cadence even more. After he had passed the finish line, he could start the celebrations. After a fantastic second half of the race, he had beaten the Swiss by one second!

i884.photobucket.com/albums/ac43/christian_gr/intro%20og%20california/7-5.png
Popovych was the last rider to start. Could he keep Leipheimer behind himself in the GC? After a strong time trial, the Ukrainian found out that he could. Popovych ended up in a good third place, only 29 seconds behind Levi. We now held the two top placings in the GC!
