Ideas for 2011
SportingNonsense
We are now past the halfway point of the 2010 management game season so it is around now that the planning starts for the 2011 season - to try and avoid a gap of multiple months between the last race and the start of the pre-season activities (renewals/transfers).

So if you have any ideas or suggestions for the Management Game, post them here so that they can be considered.

Here's one.

Have wild cards for PT events decided as the season progresses. Applicant submits a team for the race, and the invitation is decided on this, plus nationality, plus CT ranking.

Agreed. Plus, this gives managers that are actually active on the forum more chances, which would be a fair thing to do I guess.

I think the Xp system should be changed so that results count for improvements and race days count less.

Would be difficult to implement and might be tough on young riders.

But i do like fenian's idea

Not really, just instead of giving raceday*2 xp give raceday+points gained/100 Xp

where the 100 is just a number i made up and would obviously be changed based on the points gained this year.

It would be good as in would encourage young riders to be loaned to the CT where they would mature faster than the PT

I do agree the system needs changing. Because it really is pretty weird you are rewarded for letting a young rider race a hell of a lot, while IRL, this would ruin someone's talent.

So you are just saying it would take a crap rider longer to develop not that he would develop into a worse rider?

Could also be done by a simple change such as 1*race days for ProTour development, and 2*race days for Continental development. Perhaps it would need to more for Continental though as domestiques in ProTour currently have twice as many race days as domestiques in Continental

There was a discussion about the stat gain system previously I think. Like mb2612 I think there should be some element of performance being rewarded (or not). As it is now, the guaranteed gains makes things a little too predictable.

Then again, there is the problem of the high transfer fees some paid for young riders knowing they would become superstars in the future.

If you have the young riders only gain experience as a reward for racing hard, the "shit" riders, ie the level 1 completely domestique ones will barely ever get any experience and won't level up, unless you spend money on training them, which won;t happen, as the leader of the team, who's probably young, leveled up too fast as a result of results, and who's already been trained, will be trained once again.

I do think, however, that a factor of the Pro Tour should be included. Ie, only pro tour races can factor towards level 4 experience. However, this experience can be gained from level 1. Yes, it would take longer to work out, but (SN) as you know, I'm happy to help out with keeping track of that.
This would encourage Continental teams to send a mixed team to pro tour wildcards, and to get more of them if they have a young squad. On wildcards, I do like the system mentioned above, having wildcards chosen before the season, and then to have about 10 managers not seem active or anything seems like a waste of someone else's enjoyment in seeing their team race just for fun.

Obviously it can't be just based on points but a combination of the two would be good, possibly giving a maximum amount which can be gained by points which would avoid anyone gaining to quickly. As far as the weaker riders go, they get more race days and hence they level up faster anyway, also then some riders might only max out when they are 26 or so which would be nice.
As far as the level 4 thing goes I am not sure what you mean but I think you want level 4 to be run on a different system, which could work but it would mean that a talent in the PT would, as soon as they hit level 4, jump to max. Whereas I can see some CT domestiques never getting to move up. Of course to counter this you could refuse to give race day experience bellow level 3 to any PT races, which would make young talents have to start in the CT.

You can't promise already good young riders more experience from doing well. It's just not a fair system. Otherwise a rider like Spilak, if he'd started at level 2, would be level 4 maxed within half a season kinda thing. The only way to almost counter leveling good young riders up too much, is to put an average limiter on them at certain ages. At 18, an average of 67, 19 - 68, 20 - 69, 21 - 70, but as you can see, that would slow the game down so much. The only real reason to buy young riders is the fact that they DO level up so fast. Otherwise, I wouldn't have spent so much of my money on all youth riders this past season.
I can't see this coming season adding much more in the way of new talented youth riders that we've previously missed off, so I can't see a massive influx of too many again. Plus I reckon with a little rejig of CT and PT budgets, we'll see a bit of a move to the PT with some of the talents. I'm, personally, not up for changing a system twice in two seasons, otherwise, how can you see if it's worked or not?

As to level 4...

A rider levels up level 1,2,3 and upto 4 normally, regardless of which races they do.
If during level 2, they do a grandtour, of the experience they've gained, 42 points of it, is level 4 experience. Meaning that when they get to the start of level 4, they can progress upto level 4.42, but no further until they do another race.
If, during level 3, they also did 3 single day classics, then they could potentially level up to 4.48.

I also think, that your little point of only allowing level 1 to level up by doing CT races, or nationals, as a good one. Would mean that loaning out new talents as vital.

If you mean joining game with a brand new team then yes, there will be some more of that - although not as many as last season.

So in your system does that mean riding a Grand Tour before Level 4 in effect gives you 84 race days? Or do ProTour races only count for level 4 that way?

No, riding a grand tour, or a pro tour race only "unlocks" the potential.

Imagine a limiter the sits at level 4.00. The only way the limiter can be lifted is racing pro tour/grand tour races. But that only gives normal experience. However, it also affects the limiter. So after a day of racing the limiter could lift by 1, or 2, or 3, or whatever you want it to. The point of it is to prevent riders in the CT from reaching level 4.100 before they've even experienced the pro tour level.

Take this poorly demonstrated example:

Season 1
Rider 1 - Level 1.00, Limiter at 4.00
Races 50 CT races - 100 exp, goes upto level 2.00

Season 2
Rider 1 - Level 2.00, Limiter at 4.00
Races 45 CT races, 5 PT races.
100 exp, goes to level 3.00.
Limiter gains 5 race days worth (be that 1,2 or 3 points worth, I'll take it as 2 for the moment), so limiter is now at 4.10

Season 3
Rider 1 - level 3.00, Limiter at 4.10
Races 40 CT races, 10 PT.
Gains 100 exp, goes to level 4.00
Limiter gains 10 PT days, so up to 4.30

Season 4
Rider 1 - level 4.00, limiter at 4.30.
Still stuck in the CT, and doesnt race any pro tour races, still does 50 CT days, so 100 exp.
But limiter is at 4.30, so only gains 30 exp this season, and is now at 4.30 experience, and limiter is still at 4.30

Season 5
Rider 1 - level 4.30, limiter at 4.30
Bought by a PT team, races 50 days, gains 100 exp, and 100 points for the limiter, so can now max at 5.00, or 4.100, whichever you want to call it.

For the salary cap thing, i think remove it completely, lower budgets massively, remove training and make the differences between team budgets bigger
