Seeing as it's that time of year once again
Both demos have been out for a while now, so what do people think of Konami and EA's efforts this year?
Seems to be a general consensus in the media that FIFA has basically refined '09 to a pinnacle (plus 360 degree dribbling), and is consequentialy the best damn football game available. Konami have gone for a different look and feel in comparison to last year, which, as far as I can make out, is receiving a mixed reaction from games journalists.
Personally, having played both game demos, I still see FIFA as an arcade football title - fun initially, but too easy to score, and VERY similar to last years game. PES 2010 seems to be the better game for me, it still nails it when it comes to realistic passages of play, and no two games feel quite the same. Player models are very good this year, too. I've also heard that the XBOX and PS3 versions will use Microsoft and Sony's own servers, so should be able to get a lag-free online game which will be a BIG improvement.
Will get PES at launch as always, but may not get FIFA for a while (although its out Friday, where as its a long three week wait for PES...) |

Well, last year, I ended up buying PES at first - just like I had done for many, many years in row. I got very annoyed with the game, though. E.g., I had the experience that there was pretty much no difference between playing an ordinary match and playing a Be a Superstar-match (or whatever it's called). Also, it seemed stupid and senseless not to use the Champions League-license now that they had finally got one.
So, I exchanged the game with FIFA09. And I'm satisfied with that today. I hadn't played FIFA for many years, but from then until now there's been a massive change with FIFA trying to become less arcade, more realism.
Anyway, enough about that.
I haven't tried both demos on the same platform yet. Played the FIFA10 demo on my PS3 once or twice, and the PES10 demo on my PC once. FIFA10 seemed pretty much like FIFA09, maybe a tad faster (which is a shame). PES, on the other hand, seemed extremely fast! It was faster than FIFA and way easier to score. Didn't seem like a PES game at all.
I hope I'm wrong and that I somehow messed up some settings ... but PES seemed extremely arcade-like.
Either way, I'll be buying FIFA10 tomorrow. |

My one commentary has to be that Mike is obviously on crack because (as everyone on the internet seems to be pointing out lately) this is by far the slowest PES ever.
Which is good. It's more realistic. The player movements are the smartest and most realistic I've seen outside of FM, both offensively and defensively. I personally like realism above all else, so for me that's the choice there.

As I said, it's weird. I'll try downloading it to my PS3 soon - this can't be right. |

So I gave in and bought FIFA tonight because it was £26 at the supermarket ASDA...and I'm not totally convinced by it.
Seems practically identical to '09, and the players still don't move like real human beings - the whole thing looks like the players are playing football on rollerblades - and fails to capture the ebb and flow of most real football matches: the ball constantly pings around like its a pinball machine, and an emphasis on the spectacular (through balls nearly always come off, tricks are dead easy to perform, shooting is nearly always on target)...which ruins the experience, its too arcadey and too easy.
The presentation is mint though, and virtual pro is a nice addition. Sometimes it is nice to score three chipped goals in a game - it looks cool - shame it can be achieved in most games against the CPU.
I think I'll plug away at it for another week, then trade it in a week or two's time for Batman...heard that was quite good

I agree that it seems pretty much identical to '09. Not that many changes, unfortunately.
Only played 1 match so far, but will try changing a few settings today, e.g. the game speed. Might make the experience a tad better. |

After having tried the PES10 demo, I gotta say, I'm very impressed by it so far, the graphics are amazing! And the gameplay is so very realistic imo. And am yet to explore the card system to it's fullest.

For the PC, PES is the way to go, since they arrived at PC with PES3 years ago.
FIFA is utterly shit on PC, tried it a few times, never liked it since the old days, when fifa was THE footy game.
On consoles however, it's a hole different story. There its Fifa > Pes now.
So if you are a pc gamer => PES!!!!
Console => Fifa!!! |

Being a bit insecure about the PES thing, I tried the demo on PS3 today. My experience is the same: It's the worst PES game that I have played. And I still don't see how people can call it 'slow' - it's faster than FIFA09.
Oh, and about FIFA10, I'm still quite disappointed about the lack of changes. I was very annoyed with the slow menus - usually, EA has an excellent menu design - and they're pretty much unchanged in '10. Whenever I start the game, I'm asked to select the language, and I get a notice about the autosave function being active - why? Waste of my time.
And more importantly, the goalkeeper still acts like someone who's never seen a ball before.
Honestly, I prefer FIFA09 over both PES and FIFA10, but my friends will probably start playing FIFA10 now, so I will too |

I have not played either demo but an 36% through downloading fifa demo right now. I hate PES it sucks so bad. I am certain PES will definatley not be better than Fifa on PC. I have loved all fifa games since I started buying them in 2003 and I am certain this year will be no different. |

Funny, since FIFA PC sucked ever since 2000. I played 09 and 2010 and I can't see how FIFA is any good.
Every goal looks the same, you can score from 30m with even the suckiest teams from the suckiest league. I can drible with Ooijer as well as I can with Ronaldinho, there is no realism at all in FIFA. I played it against my friend loads of times (fifa) and never I seem to amaze myself how unrealistic the game is.
I prefer PES (on the PC) by miles and miles. So much more realism, so much slower, so much harder to decent with bad teams, much more realistic player behaviour. And even the graphics are quite far superior.
No, there is no way I'm buying FIFA 10 on the pc
Consoles are a different story |

After trying out PES 10 demo some more, I really think that this is one great game gameplay wise, it is actually possible to see that Messi is faster than Abidal this time. The AI is really smart this time around, when playing against Italy, you can use loads of time running round after the ball, while the italians do what they do best, making the others run, I can't say anyhting about 360 movement as I play with a keyboard but, the players are moving smoother this time, possibly because of that. Player individuality is also very big this time I think, you can really feel that you are dribling with Messi and not Iniesta there is big diffrence in just using those two imo. Worst thing about the game is the very sucky goalkeepers, which act like the are 10 year olds some times, hopefully this will get changeed in a patch, but i somehow doubt it.

Okay. There is no need to use the Game Face function yet for Fifa 10. Why?

I'd shut up if I were you, considering he looks exactly like your South Park avatar
