Tour of Bulgaria - Stage 3
tsmoha
i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_001_zps831b52ee.jpg

Time for the first hilly stage here, which comes again short at just 133km in total, featuring a tough climb early into the stage.

Though it might be questioned, wether this stage will be the crucial one for top-puncheurs like Dowsett or Skujins, as it ain't too challenging in the final 40km..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_002_zpsacb6a2da.jpg

Two riders went clear on that first climb, establishing a 3-minutes-gap on the peloton quickly: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred, who's a well known name in breakaways in this race so far (therefore he's a real threat for taking the KoM-lead today)

KoM (Cat 1) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Dowsett i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle

Dowsett actually did sprint for those points, will he also aim for the KoM-competition? Or will he be that aggressive today?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_003_zps754e5d13.jpg

We're jumping straight into the final 20km, just when the peloton (led by Hornbach) would pull the two early escapees back. Those two did take out all intermediates, with Manfred indeed claiming the KoM-lead:

KoM (Cat 3) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Dowsett
KoM (Cat 2) i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Dowsett i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/esc.png Earle
Sprint #1 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Grosu
Sprint #2 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/mag.png Drujon
Sprint #3 i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Dieteren i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Manfred i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening

So apparently, Dowsett (as well as Earle) do aim for the KoM-competition. At least, they always attack prior to those sprints without keeping the pace up to maybe trying to escape..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_004_zps47893e9b.jpg

16.5km to the finish, this may change though: i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/jag.png Dowsett follows a first serious attempt by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/gzl.png Weening! Some more riders try to jump behind..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_005_zpsa3f1fac0.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Skujins, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Eichler, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/sbp.png Hermans, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Popkov, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Acevedo and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/rep.png Kashechkin.. as well as i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/kap.png Marzano, who's a few seconds down though!

So race-leader Eichler seems to be well aware of those dangerous moves, yet fighting against some much stronger puncheurs!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_006_zpsdb500096.jpg

11km to go and three riders appeared to be the strongest of those attackers: Skujins, Weening and Dowsett make for a premium classed new leading group, with the bunch (with all other attackers reeled in) being 52" in arrears at this point!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_007_zpsa65d3401.jpg

The trio struggles to keep this gap though, with the less challenging profile suiting the hard chasing bunch..

..and so Dowsett and Skujins launch another attack 7km before finish, dropping Weening this way.. will they stand a chance here?

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_008_zpsb78c727b.jpg

Ain't exactly looking too good with now just 4km remaining: Team Hornbach pulls the strings hard to narrow the gap, which is back to just 20" in the meantime. No major splits in the bunch as well. It's kinda like 2 against 100..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_009_zps529b0c06.jpg

And it's over.. Dowsett/Skujins couldn't hold on to their gap and the sprinting bunch swallows the duo 2.5km before finish.. Hornbach did a great job so far and has also two serious contenders for today's bunch sprint..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_010_zpsf87f4206.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Trentin enter the final 1.5km with a comfortable gap on the bunch, with only i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Grosu just a bike length in arrears!

Next in line is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/csc.png Cobo, who may be in the mix for some important bonus seconds if he manages to close this gap!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_011_zps479fa584.jpg

Van Poppel can't keep his speed, he suffers from today's hilly parcours.. it's Trentin versus Grosu!

Moving forward with some impressive speed: Breschel!

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_012_zps4e45609d.jpg

So with the line approaching, it may actually be Trentin, Grosu and Breschel, who fight for the stage honours! It's exactly what those three were hoping for prior to the race: a less selective stage three, which suits them perfectly..

i1176.photobucket.com/albums/x323/tsmoha/MG14_Reports/MG14_Eritrea/MG14_Bulgaria/14Bulgaria_3_013_zps4e6d905f.jpg

i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Trentin holds off i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/met.png Grosu and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Breschel! Hornbach with it's second stage-win plus keeping Eichler in yellow today. A great team-work here, this is kinda well deserved.

Completing the Top-5 are i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/hrc.png Van Poppel and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys14/amx.png Taborre.. Skujins (11th) and Dowsett (16th) had nothing left to be serious contenders for the stage.

So notable changes in the GC, except of Trentin, Grosu, Breschel and of course Manfred (2nd) and Dieteren (7th) grabbing some bonus seconds to enter the Top-10.
