Apparently I'm a second rate sprinter, not sure how I feel about that
AS the team captain I call the shots! If you cant accept your role on the team, you can take a hike to some "2nd rate" team like Barilla. We only want those with a positive attitude
All was quiet in the hotel. Bunzl was doing a bit of celebrating, but they knew they had to keep this up tomorrow. Christer was the least cocky on the team actually, as everyone else was talking him up like he was the best. This is why we were here, to determine the best.
Halvor was mad. He knew that race was his. That blue sprint jersey he would wear wasn't enough. I don't know if it was more anger or disappointment, but he made it clear tomorrow 2nd wasn't good enough.
Celesio & Spotify, both of which hung in the back of the peleton for the stage earlier today, seemed content with the performances. It looked as if they were here for more of practice purposes. It was time for sleep. I noticed Cadbury was up later than everyone else, but who knows why that was.
-~-~-~-~-~
See the smirk on that rider from Bunzl? Thats Blueprint, who did a majority of the pacing yesterday. He was overheard asking Halvor how that Blue jersey felt. Christer just looked at him, "Shut-Up Blueprint, he beat you didn't he?"
Tensions. The race was just starting, and there were already riders who knew they wouldn't be keeping up with the group. There were also riders who knew they needed redemption from yesterday.
Riders were off. It was obvious right from the start that Celesio would be up front today, unlike yesterday.
Many riders were giving little effort at the start. The pace was relatively high, and all break attempts failed. Hell, the riders didn't even realize they had passed the first sprint they were too nervous, and it was 547984 ahead of two Celesio riders at the line.
Thats another story. 547984. He was wearing a United States champion jersey, and who really knows why. You would have to ask valverde321 on that one. Anyways, he intentionally went for the mountain sprint, and he did come out on top. Still no break yet.
We finally had action. With 100km to go, we see lukaas, alnibbles, and vangerner all attack. They got about a minute out, and then from nowhere MARSUPILAMI launched himself away from the main field, eventually catching the others.
FIRST CRASH OF THE YEAR! It was at the rear end of the peleton, and T-Photon and ste117 were the riders.
With just 75km to go, there was a 5:00 gap, the highest it would get. Christer remained at the front of the main field, with Bunzl pacing the main field.
Meanwhile, up in the break, it was MARSUPILAMI that took the last sprint of the day, leading the group which now had a 4:00 lead with 60km.
To the main field, we see Celesio take the pacing of the peleton and pick it up. lokytrew and johannes-w were pacing. They got the gap to 3:00 with 40km left.
Not much more action from this point until we reach the 15km mark, where the break was captured. There were a few off the back from the climb, obviously out of shape.
10KM to go. That's all that separated the riders from the line. A group of about 20 cyclists just out of nowhere launched an attack with 5KM left. In that group all the favorites, Christer, Halvor, Roman, Squire, 547984, jseadog1, and more that were high finishers on day 1.
With 1KM left the outcome really was not determined.
Halvor and Squire, who finished top 5 day one, were pounding on those pedals looking for speed. The promises that were made really did come true, Halvor would not be held back today, and he wins the stage!!
After the race, Christer congratulated Halvor behind the podium, with many riders feeling the same outcome they did in day 1.

Some interesting developments to start the season. Christer, Squire, and Halvor take the top 4 both stages. The rest were spread out, but you can definitely tell who is in shape and who isn't to start the season. There are still plenty of stages left in the race, and anything could happen. Hopefully, as the season progresses everyone will be able to coincide and get along. See you guys tomorrow for the next stage!

That Subway kit is too ugly for words. I was in a good position coming in to the finish but then looked directly at it for too long and had to go back to the car to take many pills.
Good job by the team to keep the lead.

I love that... I guess I know who to turn to if the story ever takes a "doping" turn

I must say, having just looked at my stats. I am a solid rider and very happy with my 10th place on Stage 1. Hopefully I can put in a good GC for the Roosters here in Aussie.
For being this early in the season, there sure were tensions in the air at the hotel. Bunzl knew that anything could change in the first mountain stage of the year. The ultimate test of who was in early shape, and who needed more training. Of course, riders were nervous they would be the one to fall behind first, and be the early laughing stock.
Different teams had different strategies. The stage was going to come down to who had the best one. Stage favorites were 547984, miggi133, and Squire. But of course this early in the season, everything was unpredictable.
Well, it was obvious that teams needed rest, as it was an early night for all of the squads, who were anxious to give it another go tomorrow.

It was another scorching hot day for these guys. Is it always like this here? 145KM wasn't AS BAD as yesterday, but I wouldn't look forward to it. You could just tell by looking at these guys that something big was going to happen, but what?
From the start, many riders were working their way to the front of the field. It wasn't long until they launched attacks. It was a 5 rider break in the end, after they got away and were reeled in, they got back away and out to a 2:30 lead relatively quick.
It was Guiterrez, Ozzy, lokytrew, mpardo, and mattiasgt.
Geez. Not even a quarter of the way in and there were some dropping off. Easy to see some are just not in shape yet. Most would catch back up, but the team managers can't be happy. The break was at a 5:00 lead with 85KM left. Not too many teams worried. Bunzl, Subway, and Tisot were up front I noticed.
I also noticed 547984 & jseadog1 bringing Citigroup towards the front. They have disappointed thus far, as they have had the outright favorite in every stage so far, but have not even registered a Top 10 yet. Another thing I noticed was Spotify at the back again. They really are treating this race as practice I suppose.
Looks like lokytrew is the best sprinter in the break, as he won both from the break. At the halfway point of the race, there was significant speed increase from the peleton. lukaas was pacing the pack.
In case things got crazy, teams were fighting for the front, and Celesio and Tisot kept switching back and forth for that spot. Christer and Team Bunzl were also noticeably right in the thick of things. It was now a 2:30 gap with 30KM remaining.
Slowly arising were the tensions, and you can tell the riders were feeling it. Favorites Squire, Halvor, Christer, 547984, miggi133, and jseadog1 were all right up front. We also saw an emergence from Exxon-Mobile.
A side note that I found funny happened with just 20Km left. Mountain leader vangerner could not keep up on the mountains, and fell off the pace along with many others.
It was a 2:30 lead with 15KM left, it is really looking like the break is going to make it yet again. Somebody has to do something. Right on cue, 547984 launches a major attack on the uphill. Squire, Halvor, and many of the favorites are right on his tail, and they crest the mountain still 1:50 behind with 7km.
The 20 or so riders that managed to keep up with the favorites were rapidly moving down the hill. Unfortunately, not everyone can make it down safely. It was a sad sight. 547984, who was leading the chase, bit the dust when he got too close to the edge of the road. Down he went. He looked hurt bad. jseadog1 did not know what to do never being in this situation. Does he stop? Does he keep going? This definitely slowed his momentum, putting Citigroup out of it.
It was unbelievable. Ozzy was sprinting in the lead with 500meters left. He couldn't believe what was possible about to happen. One final turn around and no chase in the near sight. However, lokytrew was in near sight, and he was the best sprinter in the break. He made himself look fresh in the chase, and cruised pass the break in route to a HUGE win for Celesio.
He took over the lead! He was more shocked than the favorites, who yet again were not able to capitalize. Looks like these daily riders don't know how to handle the break just yet. Christer wasn't left out in the dark though, he still had a jersey to sport.
That was all. 547984 met up with personnel after the race, and will be getting evaluated tonight. There were 2 riders in the back arguing after the race, but I could not see who. Not sure if anyone else saw who it was, but I will try to get an update for tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see what the big deal was with the 2 riders arguing after the race. The field is already shocked enough, tensions rising even more might cause trouble. I hope 547984 is alright, although that was a hard hit. It will be interesting to see how Citigroup recovers, seeing how Bushwackers led the team finishing 8th in the stage. Can the favorites recover to win the overall race, or will we see an underdog shine already!

According to the latest piece of news leaked by the Secret Amateur, there has been some bad blood between two members of Citigroup Team, jdog and 547984. jdog is not amused that despite he is a veteran and has more reputation than the much more capable 547984, he is not ranked as high as 547984 in team hierarchy. The Secret Amateur has reported that it was an intentional move for jseadog1 to use a rogue rider dressed in Citigroup kit, jseadog2, to intentionally cause 547984 to crash. 547984 failed to speak to media after this incident, only opting for private messages with jseadog1.

Big thanks to jdog for making this AMAZING userbar!
Its been a whirlwind week for valverde321. The thought of having to sack one rider earlier in the week for acting out publicly and now an apparent fight between two other members of the team is not what the best rider in the world wants to be dealing with. Here's hoping this wont limit his chances of winning every single WT Classic as well as all 3 Grand Tours this year.
