I have got tothe point where I don't mind Birt losing 8 minutes and finishing behind Tom Dumolin on a Mountain stage. He has showed himself well in the firat week for both the right and wrong reasons but he is getting noticed as an attacking rider which I like.

I am also hoping that Birt helps Konig because that Top 10GC is deserved and with more finiahes like this one I think Konig can do it. It will be great to soectate the fight in Spain over the next two weeks.

And good reporting Luigi, very nice detail in the report. Although I think you are unlucky for Birt cause he hasn't had any good luck yet but has had his fair share of bad luck.

On paper it doesn’t look to hard but today isn’t one for the sprinters, it’s for the punchers. The ending climb is thought and should give an real fight for the finish. There is an climb just before the end where daring riders could try to make an attack that sticks to the end. An breakaway is also not unthinkable, if Movistar is done winning.

An break was formed easily but not thanks to Movistar’s pace at the front. It were Garmin, Sky and RadioShack that used their riders in pursuit of Dumoulin (Argos), Geniez (FDJ), Velasco (Caja Rural), Seeldraeyers (Astana). However when it appeared that Movistar wouldn’t set anybody into the break the teams backed off and let the break get away

the breakaway today

A breakaway win isn’t going happy today most likely as the peloton has limited a 6,5 minute gap back to 2,5 minutes at the start of the Alto de Fraille, the climb before the final wall. This inspired Moser (Cannondale) and Birt (NetApp) to attack.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0135_zps882c2692.jpg
the attacks from the peloton

The two worked well together and bridged the gap to the breakaway together and the pack in the meantime let the gap grow to 3 minutes.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0139_zps25fb9147.jpg
the latest additions to the breakaway

Just below the mountain sprint, Moser attacked to get an gap on his breakaway companions. Piedtra and Seeldraeyers followed but the gap Moser got is a minimal 11 seconds. At almost the exact place but two minutes later, Urán made a move to get some room

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0140_zps64a58fe8.jpg
up and over the breakaway

Thanks to the big downhill the break has a 1,5 minute gap to the peloton when they started the final wall. The last additions to the break, Birt and Moser are the first to go and they have a 10 meter gap. Meanwhile the peloton has split up into 3 groups. The first group consist of Urán, Martin, Horner, Valverde, Rodríguez and Froome. The second group is 20 seconds behind them and are Van Den Broeck, König, Ghita, Owniak, Caruso. The rest of the riders are in the peloton and are 1,5 minutes behind.

Birt and Caruso started the final dash

Birt drops Caruso and the rest as soon as the gradiant move up to 20%. The others have caught up to Moser

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0142_zpsc81b98e8.jpg

Birt wins in Valdepeñas de Jeán, after yesterday’s amazing performance by Konig now it’s Birt to show what’s he worth.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0143_zps8d0523af.jpg
NetApp amazing performance continues

The rest of the breakaway take up places 2-6 in the order Geniez (FDJ), Seeldraeyers (Astana), Dumoulin (Argos), Moser (Cannondale), Velasco (Caja Rural)

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0144_zps238506e6.jpg
the breakaway holds on to the final podium spots

Rodríguez wins the peloton sprint, well have to look at the replay to see what exactly happened here as it looks like Valverde isn’t as strong as the previous stages, is he fading already?

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0145_zpsb8c33748.jpg
Urán gets 8th behind Rodríguez in the peloton sprint, Froome 9th and Martin is 10th. Valverde has to settle with 11th infront of Horner. Leopold König closed the gap to the first riders from the peloton to take 13th.

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0146_zps1d4da350.jpg
Caruso, Owniak, Van den Broeck and Ghita lose a little time but are the last from the winners today. Everybody that finishes behind them are losing 2 minutes on the leaders. In this group are Majka (TST), Fuglsang (AST) and Sánchez (EUS)

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0147_zps4cab3d99.jpg
Sánchez and Majka finishing in the peloton cost them dearly

The replay shows that Urán was the first to get an gap on the final climb and Rodríguez was the only one that could follow him, with both of them gaining time. On the rest

i1302.photobucket.com/albums/ag121/SSJ2Luigi/EPIC/PCM0150_zps1c2f8618.jpg

Valverde lost some time on today but still has a 1’45 lead on Rodriguez and 2’10 lead on Urán. Froome is just 5 seconds behind Urán and Horner is 15 seconds behind Froome. Martin is still 6th, Van den Broeck keeps gaining places and is now 7th. Fuglsang drops to 8th. Sánchez drops one place to 9th. Intxausti also drops a place to 10th. Ghita is 11th, Caruso is 13th, Majka is 15th, König is 18th and Ten Dam is 20th

Once again excellent report. The first time that Movistar struggles a bit. It isnt a good sign that Froome and the others could gain time on Valverde as this stage suited him well.

On the other side: Congratz to NetApp. A well deserved win for Birt after the last stages!
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Come on Ten Dam, can you at least try to follow?

Happy for NetApp, they deserve that win.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Shonak
Wow wow wow, Birt you magnificent boy you are. He worked well for the team in the last days and it's great to see him taking his chance and getting his first of many GT wins and his already second win this season in fact. Certainly one of the hottest prospects around.

OGE will get a fantastic rider next year. Smile

Good to also see König climb further up the GC and limit damages today (2 minutes away from Top 10 goal), but it's definitely Birt's day in the spotlight.

Thanks guys. Wink

Really Moser.... dammit. You're lucky I like you. Angry

Birt very much a success story for the EPIC rider scheme Wink Ghita is only 20 seconds off the top 10, hopefully when the going gets tough some of the teammates in the top 10 will drop out

Bikex
Then finally Purito is the best favourite to finish but a break makes it through. Rolling Eyes
Still happy for Netapp though, they deserve it. Smile

Pleased for NetApp. Am I the only one (except Shonak of course) hoping König goes full retard and gets on the podium.

Meanwhile, on planet BMC, I'm gonna go and bang my head against the wall for a few hours. WILL SOMEBODY TRY TO GO FOR A STAGE WIN. Morabito has still done nothing all season!!! Angry

ps. Owniak still going well. Needs to put some time into Ghita to get that white jersey now. Grin

Hell Yeah!!!
Mitchell Birt you beast Grin
Hopefully it won't be his last win in Spain this year, I thought he may have attacked to later support Konig but to go on and win the stage will surely boost his confidence and raise the spirits of the Net-App Team.

Satisfaction in beating Majka every day Smile Good to see a battle between two EPIC riders, now it's time for Damian to take that stage win Smile
